Chapter 373
Five days later
Joseph walked out of the prison where he had stayed for a few days with his hands in his pockets. He had gotten a buzz cut that didn't diminish his good looks at all.
On the contrary, his handsome features appeared even sharper and more persistent, as if he was emerging with all his edges showing, making him seem even more intimidating.
"Joseph, these past days have been tough on you," Walter said as he approached with excitement.
Michael punched him hard in the chest, "I thought I'd never get another chance to share a drink with you in this lifetime."
"All the big families in New York came out in full force to pin something on me. Quite the spectacle, but it’s not so easy to take me down," Joseph declared, scanning his surroundings. Other than the members of his close-knit team and a few brothers, he didn't see the figure he was hoping for.
"Where's Cassie?" He frowned, wondering if that woman had taken the opportunity to run with her heart of steel.
His men fell into silence, Walter looking down.
"Speak," Joseph demanded, his voice tinged with a fierce edge.
There was a pause before Lucas coughed softly and said reluctantly, "Joseph, Cassie was taken by the Hernandez family the day you were brought in for questioning."
Joseph grabbed Walter, furious, "Didn't I tell you to keep an eye on her, Walter? Where the hell did Joe go?"
"I'm sorry, Joseph," Walter said through clenched teeth, full of guilt. "Dragon betrayed us. He knocked Joe out, and the Hernandez's butler took Miss Brooks away."
Joseph's eyes narrowed; this was unexpected.
"When was this?" Joseph demanded.
"The fifth day today," Walter responded carefully, "But I've had people keeping an eye on the Hernandez estate, and it seems Miss Brooks hasn't been sent away."
"If she hasn't been sent away, she's surely locked up in their estate dungeon," Joseph snapped, yanking Walter forward, his face ashen. "And you just left her there? Why didn't you send someone to rescue her?"
Michael, unable to stand by any longer, chimed in, "Everyone's been dealing with the major New York families while trying to figure out how to get you out. We haven't had the time. And Walter, he's just one of your guys—how could he dare storm the Hernandez estate? You know how cunning his father is."
Lucas nodded in agreement, "Joseph if you're going to rescue Cassie, you need to be prepared to stand against your father."
"My girl, I can't just leave her behind." Joseph strode toward the sports car, but instead of opening the door, he retrieved a gun from the trunk.
Everyone was stunned, and Lucas frowned, "Joseph, are you bringing a gun to the Hernandez estate?"
"Have you lost your mind? Is it worth it for a girl?" Michael yelled at him in frustration, "New York's elite already ostracizes you, and if you cross the Hernandezes now, the consequences will be unthinkable."
Noah Collins, who had been silent, suddenly spoke up timidly, "Joseph, I'm with you."
"Noah Collins, stop stirring the pot, will you?" Michael snapped, seemingly irritated for no reason.
"Michael, if it were Megan Ray, you wouldn't be saying that," Noah Collins retorted unabashedly, pouting.
Michael's face tensed, "It's not the same; Megan Ray grew up with us, but how long has Joseph known Cassie?"
"That's enough; I failed to protect her last time; this time, I have to go," Joseph commanded Walter without turning back, "Inform the Dragon's crew, and everyone heads to the Hernandez villa. I want it surrounded."
With that, he got into his car and sped off.
Watching him leave, Lucas pulled out his phone and called his assistant, "Send the backup to the Hernandez estate for Joseph, now."
"Lucas, are you out of your mind too?" Michael was on the verge of exploding.
"For a brother, we go through hell and high water," Lucas shrugged nonchalantly, "If you're not willing to help, just forget about it."
