Chapter 500

Joseph's gaze was intense, his voice insistent. "You still haven't answered my question. Who do you want as the children's godmother? If it's Laura, I can't agree. Her intelligence is questionable. And Nina, I absolutely won't agree..."

Cassie, frustration simmering, grabbed a pillow and hurled it at him. "Joseph, you're always looking for a fight, aren't you?" She said, a hint of anger in her voice. "I'm the mother. I have the right to choose the godmother. If you keep nagging, you might find yourself without any children to worry about."

Joseph's face darkened instantly. "What did you just say?" He demanded. " Cassie, think before you speak. Don't assume our baby is too tiny to understand. Have you considered how this might affect them?"

Cassie, already emotional and sensitive due to her pregnancy, was brought to tears by Joseph's reprimand. "It's your fault for upsetting me. If you want to reconcile with me, you have to accept my friends."

Joseph, concerned, tried to soothe her. "Okay, okay, stop crying."

But Cassie didn't stop. Her tears flowed freely as she raised her voice. "And how dare you criticize my friends? Is Michael really that clever? I think he’s as dumb as a pig and Lucas is a playboy. None of them are good."

Joseph was momentarily speechless. Logically, he should have been angry about her insults to his friends. But seeing her tears made him sad. "Stop crying. Crying too much isn't good for the baby."

"I’ll cry if I want!" Cassie retorted. "You always come to argue with me at night. I just want to sleep, but you won't let me."

The suppressed pain in her heart erupted. Cassie couldn't control herself. Even Emerson Summers, watching from the next room, came rushing in.

"Joseph, how did you get in here?" Emerson stepped between them protectively. "Grandma said I should keep an eye on you. This is a vulnerable time for your wife, so you shouldn't be sleeping together. And here you are, making Cassie cry. Get out."

Joseph might have protested more if it had been anyone else, but he dared not against Emerson, who had been with Grandma for decades. Yet, he felt wronged. "I just came to tell a story to our little one."

Cassie, still crying, managed to retort: "You just come... to upset me. Just go away."

"Joseph, please leave now." Emerson ushered him out.

Only after Joseph had left was Cassie able to stop her tears, but irritation still lingered in her heart.

The next morning, she had dark circles under her eyes. At breakfast, the elders, Walter and Grandma, heard about the previous night. Walter lost his temper. "Do you even want this child? You’re already an adult."

Grandma was equally furious. "From now on, seal off that balcony. Don't let him sneak in again."

Joseph, his expression a mix of defeat and unhappiness, gently nudged Cassie's legs with his foot and murmured: “Honey…”

Cassie turned her face away, ignoring him completely.

Two days later, at Maple Leaf Hospital in Madison, Laura hurried over as soon as she received the call from the hospital.

The hospital on Monday was crowded. Laura spent over ten minutes finding a parking spot. Just as she was reversing, a red sports car came speeding towards her, nearly causing a collision. The shock nearly gave her a heart attack.

"Are they insane?" She fumed, storming out of her car. "Have you got no decency? Didn’t you see I was reversing? And you almost hit my car!"

"Laura, it's you!" A voice called out as the car window rolled down. Isla’s smug face appeared, seemingly pleased to see her.

Laura felt a wave of nausea. Within a few days of returning to Madison, she had run into the one person she couldn't stand.

"Laura, why are you back in Madison? I heard you got a new boyfriend in New York. How could you do that to Benjamin?" Isla asked, feigning concern.

"So what? Didn't you hear me? You nearly smashed into my car." Laura's tone was impatient.

Isla’s eyes flashed with hurt. "Sorry, I..."

Before she could finish, another voice interrupted. “I apologize to you on her behalf...”
