Chapter 253
"Joseph clenched his fists. ""Get it straight, Cassie. I'm a lawyer. It's about winning and losing. I'm not some crusader for justice.""
""But people need to have a conscience,"" she countered, realizing how different their worlds seemed.
""Are you saying I lack a conscience after everything I've done for you?""
His anger was towering. Never had he been so good to a woman, and yet she had dismissed it all with a single accusation. ""Is it because David risked his life for you? You want to be with him now, right? Well, maybe that suits you, since he was your admirer.""
""Stop the nonsense!"" Cassie retorted, anger flaring within her as well. ""He lost a kidney protecting me. Can't I at least stay here and take care of him as a basic sign of respect and gratitude for saving my life?""
""I don't care. You're coming with me now,"" Joseph insisted, his concern for David nonexistent. The man could play underground games, send pictures to Olivia, and pretend to be a saint on the surface, but to Joseph, he was nothing but a hypocrite.
""It seems there's more to you than meets the eye,"" Cassie fumed.
Arthur entered carrying a shopping bag. There was a hint of eagerness in his voice. ""Cassie, I've picked out something for you to wear. Why don’t you try it on?""
His warm expression froze instantly as he caught sight of Joseph.
Joseph glanced at Arthur and then back at Cassie, a smirk spreading across his face. ""Well, Cassie, no wonder you didn't want to leave. With an old flame to keep you company and a new one hoping for more, you must feel right at home.""
""So, that's what you think of me."" Cassie's eyes brimmed with tears. Her body shook uncontrollably.
""Joseph, that's enough! How can you even say such things?"" Arthur couldn't bear it. He threw the clothes aside and swung his fist at Joseph.
Joseph effortlessly blocked it. ""No, Arthur, you're the monster.”
Arthur was furious. “They almost died because of you, yet you show no remorse. Get out of here!""
""I will leave, but I'm taking her with me.""
Joseph hoisted Cassie over his shoulder. Arthur tried to intervene, but Walter quickly stepped in front of him.
""Let me go, Joseph! Don't do this, or I'll hate you!"" Cassie pounded on his back, but Joseph paid her no mind.
""Are you afraid I'll dirty you up?"" he taunted.
He tossed her into the car. Walter took the wheel and locked the doors.
Cassie realized resistance was futile. She sat far away from him and turned her head, refusing to look at him.
Joseph chain-smoked the entire drive, clearly agitated.
Cassie coughed from the smoke. He never smoked, but now it was becoming a frequent habit. She disliked men who smoked, and even more those who were unreasonable like him.
Arriving at the villa, Joseph swept her into his arms and gently placed her on the bed. Cassie sat up quickly, her voice tinged with a frosty edge. ""What's your intention, Joseph? To confine me once again? Remember, I'm the CEO of Peace Group now. I doubt you can hold me here indefinitely.""
""Peace Group isn't worth a damn. Believe me, I could shut it down tomorrow,"" Joseph sneered. ""You've known about my real identity all along, haven't you?""
Cassie's dark eyes quivered. He knew as well. Was it Richard who told him? That liar! He'd sworn her to secrecy about Joseph's true nature.
Although she wasn't fully aware of Joseph's standing within the Hernandez family, with his capabilities, he might actually pull it off.
""Joseph, would you be happy if Brandon Wright killed me today?"" Cassie's eyes welled up with tears. ""I took care of David, not because I liked him, but because I was grateful.""
""I won't let you be anywhere near him again."" Joseph's gaze was icy. He harbored a premonition that if he allowed Cassie and David more time together, he would truly lose her.
Although he had been cold to her over the past few days, learning that she had been drugged by Olivia never made him consider leaving her. He just couldn't swallow his pride; he needed time."
