Chapter 1096 Now You Can't Reach My Level
"Think carefully. If you can't win Laura back, those eighty-one lashes will be for nothing," Eric reminded, "And you can't use any underhanded tactics to force her to agree. She has to be willing."
Michael was helpless. He had endured eighty-one lashes to earn a chance to pursue Laura.
"Eric, what's more important, pride or me?" Michael said, on the verge of tears.
Eric gave him a cool glance. "Of course, pride is more important. If you leave, I still have plenty of grandsons. But once pride is lost, it's hard to regain."
Michael felt defeated. He had only been away for a short time, and already, he was unwelcome.
In the end, Michael was taken to EchoReach.
After enduring eighty-one lashes, he passed out. The Jude family called an ambulance and had him taken directly to the Nelson hospital.
When Lucas saw Michael, he asked Aaron, "Did the Jude family agree to let him come back?"
Aaron shook his head with a smile. "No, the Jude family allowed him to pursue Laura and marry into the Jude family."
When Laura heard that Megan had dumped Michael and then received eighty-one lashes, she happily called Cassie, "Let's have seafood to celebrate tonight."
"Sure." Cassie agreed without hesitation.
She had been so busy lately that she hadn't had a good get-together with Laura in a long time.
Cassie left work early, bought the seafood, and drove over. On the way, she got a call from Joseph. "Want to come over for dinner tonight? Sophia and Oliver miss you."
"Stop using them as an excuse. I already promised to have dinner with Laura tonight." Cassie saw through his little ploy immediately.
Joseph sounded aggrieved. "You'd rather spend time with Laura than with Sophia and Oliver. What's more important, friends or Sophia and Oliver?"
"Alright, I'll bring some food over later to see Sophia and Oliver." Cassie remembered that Sophia loved lobster.
"You're having lobster?" Joseph frowned. "Sophia and Oliver are too young for that."
"I'll cook it myself," Cassie said irritably, "I'll clean it thoroughly. Don't worry."
"Cassie, cleaning lobsters is a lot of work. I think I should do it," Joseph volunteered. "I promise to clean each one thoroughly and even shell them for you."
"Fine." With the offer of a free helper, Cassie hesitated for a few seconds but agreed. After all, she couldn't shake Joseph off anyway.
After buying the ingredients, Cassie headed straight to Riverside Blossom.
When Laura saw the two bags of lobster in her hands, her eyes widened. "How many pounds is that?"
"Twenty pounds," Cassie said with a smile.
Laura made a face as if she were about to cry and hugged her. "Did you buy all this just for me? I'm pregnant; I can only eat about ten pounds at most."
Cassie twitched her mouth. "Ten pounds? Dream on. You can probably eat two at most. I bought so much because I want to make extra to take to Sophia and Oliver, and Joseph is coming too."
"Why did you invite him?" Laura looked annoyed. "Are you trying to rub it in that I'm pregnant and single?"
"You're overthinking it. I just need him to clean the lobster." Cassie picked up a lobster to show her its dirty underside.
"That's so dirty. Why didn't you have the seller clean it first?" Laura said, then gave her a strange look. "You didn't do this on purpose, did you?"
"He offered to clean the lobster, so I'm letting him clean," Cassie said mischievously, "If he wants to reconcile, it's not going to be easy."
"Not easy, but there's still a chance, right?" Laura winked suggestively.
"He's too clingy. I can't shake him off." Cassie pouted.
Laura smiled and said nothing more.
About ten minutes later, Joseph arrived.
After Cassie opened the door, she led him to the kitchen. Seeing the lively lobsters, Joseph was dumbfounded.
"Get to cleaning. It's getting late, and I want to cook the lobster by seven." Cassie demonstrated how to clean a lobster and then handed him the brush before leaving.
Joseph stared blankly for a few minutes before accepting the reality.
He bent down and seriously started to handle the lobsters.
He considered himself fearless, but facing those lobster claws filled him with helplessness and despair.
After about half an hour, Lucas video-called him. Lucas was in Michael's hospital room.
Lucas had intended to show Joseph Michael's injuries, but he was stunned when he saw Joseph in an apron. "Are you cooking?"
"Cooking is a wonderful thing, but I don't have that privilege. I'm cleaning lobsters," Joseph said, turning the phone to show the many live and dirty lobsters.
Lucas's mouth twitched. "Where are you, and how did you end up like this?"
"At Laura's place. Cassie and Laura wanted lobster tonight, and I impulsively offered to clean them." Joseph smiled bitterly and sighed. "Cassie used to be my wife, and I didn't cherish her. Now, I have to resort to this to please her. It's tough. Look at my hand; it's already been pinched."
Lucas was silent for a moment, then handed the phone to the prone Michael. "Look at Joseph; he's going through what you will soon experience.."
Michael, whose butt was in excruciating pain, didn't know what to say.
Cassie and Laura were good friends, so their ideas for pranks were similar.
"Michael, watch how I clean these," Joseph said, putting the phone aside and starting to teach Michael step by step. "Got it? If you don't, you'll never have another chance to return to the Jude family."
"Get lost. Hang up the phone. I don't want to see Joseph," Michael said, utterly dejected.
After hanging up, Lucas sighed. "Thank goodness I'm not like you guys."
Michael glared at him. "I curse you to end up worse than us."
He lay back on the hospital bed, feeling both physically and emotionally drained. He didn't want to end up cleaning lobsters, either.
