Chapter 203
""Don't talk nonsense,"" Robert retorted, his voice rising sharply as though he'd been stepped on.
""Your grandmother died of illness,"" he snapped defensively.
""Yes, what a pity that her body was cremated. Otherwise, a simple autopsy would have revealed the real cause of her death,"" Cassie replied with a sneer. ""But make no mistake, I will not let you off the hook. Every bit of suffering, every hardship, and the injustice done to my grandmother – I will repay it all, bit by bit.""
With those final words, she left the conference room without looking back.
Outside, her body shook with surging emotions.
Long oppressed and bullied by the Brooks family, narrowly escaping death several times, she resolved to become stronger from today onwards, protecting herself and those around her.
---
Back in the CEO's office, she immediately instructed Locco to gather the senior management's files.
""Mr. Brooks, no need to rush. Go ahead and eat something first. I've had the kitchen prepare a spread for you…,"" one of the staff suggested.
""Just have the meal brought up here,"" she replied succinctly.
After Locco had gone, Cassie turned to Joe with gratitude, 'Thank you, really. If you weren't here today, Robert would definitely have landed a hit on me.
""It's my duty to protect you,"" Joe said with a casual smile. "" But the real thanks should go to Mr. Hernandez.""
Cassie was eager to share the good news with Joseph as well. She dialed his number: ""Joey, what are you up to?""
""Eating,"" came the brief reply.
Cassie pouted, her mood sinking. 'Aren't you going to ask if I had a successful day? You don't seem to care about me at all, hmph.
""Joe texted me an hour ago,"" Joseph's voice carried a hint of amusement. ""I hear Mr. Brooks was quite the powerhouse at the board meeting, a real force to be reckoned with. Seems like I'll just be the man behind a powerful woman from now on.""
""I have quite a few suitors lined up now that my status has changed; you better stay on your toes and keep in line, or I might just replace you,"" Cassie teased, her voice light and playful.
It always seemed he had the upper hand, keeping a tight rein on her, but now, she finally felt the tables turning. It was her turn to sing her own victory.
""Alright, I'll behave,"" Joseph assured her, his voice warm. ""Tonight, I'll make sure you're well taken care of — you’ll have no complaints.""
The exchange was just another mark of their deep-rooted, playful bond.
Joseph's words were brimming with innuendo.
From the other side of the phone, Cassie could almost feel his breath tickle her ear, making her cheeks burn hot with embarrassment as she snapped, “You sleazebag, I’m done with you.”
“I was talking about giving you a massage, make you relax,” Joseph replied with an air of innocence, “What in the world are you thinking about? Don’t tell me it’s…”
“Drop dead.” Cassie hung up without another word.
Her face flushed red as a baboon's behind, she turned to see Joe beside her, a smirk playing on her lips, which only compounded Cassie's embarrassment.
After dinner, Locco handed her a list of the company’s executives for her to review.
Cassie’s gaze landed on the name Olivia Brooks: Property Manager. A cold laugh escaped her, as she pieced together the incident at the construction site that had nearly cost her her life.
“Are we really out of people? Such an important position managed by a complete novice,” Cassie complained, “When are the executives coming in? I need to have a serious talk with them.”
Locco saw where her mind was going, hesitated, then said, “They went out to dine with the Brooks family.”
Cassie's expression darkened instantly.
She had just been appointed a board member, and not only had the executives not paid her a visit, but they also went out to eat with Robert. It was a clear snub."
