Chapter 156
"He thought he would have to argue with her, but after he spoke, Cassie sat up and began to eat without hesitation, finishing every bite as if she were an obedient robot obeying her master's commands.
Joseph Hernandez didn't know what to do next.
His experience in comforting women was sorely limited.
He had apologized; now, he just wanted to see her bubbly and quirky self again.
In the evening, he sat in his study and reached out to a few friends via video call.
Wrapped in a bathrobe and holding a glass of red wine, Lucas chuckled with elegance, ""It's a rare day when you remember we exist.""
""Yeah, because when we don't stay in touch, you couldn't be bothered to give us a ring,"" Michael added with a grin.
Noah Collins let out a hearty laugh, ""My guess is Joseph ticked off some lady, and now he's clueless.""
Joseph Hernandez shot Noah a displeased glare. Walter must have blabbed.
""Noah’s right, though,"" Collins continued, ""I've heard that Grandma always treated Cassie well, and the Brooks family seems to want nothing to do with her now. Really, Grandma was her only kin.""
Joseph lit a cigarette in silent frustration.
The group watched him, their complex expressions revealing they knew Joseph wasn't one to smoke unless he was seriously irked.
""So, what's the story?"" Lucas asked with a smile, ""Throw it at us, we'll brainstorm. I've got a trick or two up my sleeve when it comes to women.""
Noah explained, ""Cassie went to her grandmother's funeral, and Joseph here accused her of cheating. Gave her a harsh tongue-lashing.""
""That's just adding insult to injury,"" said Michael.
Lucas clicked his tongue, ""That… does sound a bit harsh.""
Joseph gave them a hard look, ""Think of something. How do you lift the spirits of a woman who's lost her most important person?""
Lucas arched an eyebrow, ""Buy jewelry, spring for a ring, flowers, or how about chartering an island to cheer her up?""
""A cash gift maybe,"" Michael suggested, ""My mom's always happy to get one.""
""Take her out for ice cream,"" Noah chimed in. ""My sister's always up for that when she's down.""
Joseph massaged his temples, ""Romance? When she's mourning?""
""Fair point,"" Lucas conceded. ""Actually, I've never dealt with that. None of my girlfriends ever lost anyone.""
