Chapter 1419 Someone He Can't Let Go Of
"She had it all figured out," Lucas muttered. "Back then, she was probably scheming with David, but she had a backup plan in case he failed. If David messed up, Carl would end up with all the presidential power, making the Jude Family the top dogs in Madison. And guess what? One of the key heirs, who just so happened to be Megan's ex, would be her ticket back in."
Cassie and Laura were floored. Laura stuttered, "You mean she had this all planned out, just in case David failed?"
"If David pulled it off, the first thing he'd do is take out Joseph and Cassie. When Joseph took that fall, he was out of it. David wouldn't suspect a thing. Once Joseph was gone, it wouldn't matter. Megan could ride David's coattails and do whatever she wanted in Madison."
Lucas continued, "But Megan was ready for David to fail. If Joseph survived, she could use that to clear her name with Michael. She'd claim David framed her or forced her into it."
At first, Cassie and Laura were puzzled, but Lucas's breakdown made it all click.
Only someone with a really twisted mind could come up with Megan's plan.
No wonder Michael was so protective of her.
"But Megan cheated on Michael. Didn't you see her getting cozy with another guy right in front of him?" Cassie asked Lucas, curious. "You guys are men; can you just forgive that?"
Lucas smirked. "If Megan could plan for Joseph's situation, why wouldn't she have a backup for breaking up with Michael? Back then, Michael had left the Jude Family and was useless to her. She wanted to ditch him.
But if Carl became president and a big shot in Madison, Michael's return to the Jude Family would boost his status. The Jude Family didn't really want to cut him off; they just wanted to teach him a lesson."
Joseph nodded and added, "Just like we thought. If David failed, Megan could go back to Michael. She probably had a plan to make Michael forgive her. She could say she didn't leave him on purpose but wanted him to return to the Jude Family for a better life. She'd spin it like she was doing it for his own good."
"Exactly, that's the most likely scenario." Lucas agreed, "If I'm right, when Michael and I caught her with Jacob, it was probably staged. Megan likely hired him. At first, Michael would doubt her, but he'd investigate.
The investigation would show Megan and Jacob were innocent. Then Michael would feel even more guilty, thinking Megan had been sacrificing for him all along."
Laura was speechless.
Laura had to admit, Joseph and Lucas, being Michael's best friends, really knew him inside out.
And clearly, Megan knew Michael just as well.
Otherwise, her plan wouldn't have worked.
After a long pause, Laura murmured, "Megan might have planned everything perfectly, but in the end, it's because Michael has feelings for her. Megan is probably someone he just can't let go of."
Lucas stayed quiet.
He could defend Michael, but Michael's protection of Megan wasn't something that would just stop overnight. It was hurting Laura too.
Lucas didn't want to defend him.
Even someone as cold as Lucas thought Michael was being a bit of a jerk.
And Joseph? Even more so.
Joseph had lost his memory and didn't have a deep bond with Michael. Now, with Michael siding with Megan and against Joseph, Joseph didn't even want to be friends with him anymore.
Cassie asked, frustrated, "So we just wait for two weeks and do nothing? Is there no way to expose Megan?"
"How?" Lucas shot back. "Go find Jacob? I bet he doesn't even get Megan's game. He probably thinks she genuinely wants to help Michael, so he went along with it."
Joseph snorted, "It's simple. Megan's done too many bad things. But Michael has hope for her, so he believes her. Deep down, he wants to think the girl he's liked for over ten years is good. Even if Megan messed up once or twice, he thinks it was necessary."
Cassie went quiet.
As much as it hurt Laura's pride, it was probably true.
Others might not believe what Megan did, but Michael did.
So he protected her.
Laura sneered. "Joseph's right. Michael can't see the truth because he doesn't want to. But no matter how much he protects her, I won't let Megan off the hook."
"Exactly, Megan's too evil," Cassie said. "Joseph, Megan hurt both me and you. Even if she died a hundred times, it wouldn't be enough. Plus, she swapped Esmeralda's ashes and threw them somewhere. The Zenith Family was ruined by Megan. We can't just let her go."
When Cassie mentioned the Zenith Family, Lucas's eyes darkened.
Joseph put his arm around Cassie's shoulder. "I'll talk to Carl about this. And I'll contact Declan. Don't forget, if it weren't for the drug Megan gave, your mom wouldn't have gotten sick. Declan's still bitter about that. We can have him put some pressure on her too."
Joseph paused and said coldly, "I promised Michael I'd wait two weeks to get my memory back, but that doesn't mean Megan gets off the hook after that."
Then, Cassie asked Joseph and Lucas to leave.
Cassie stayed to keep Laura company. "Want me to go have a drink with you?"
"It's broad daylight; the bars aren't even open." Laura wanted to drown her sorrows too, but thinking of Maeve, she forced herself to say, "Cassie, I want to consult a lawyer about the divorce and fight for custody of the kid."
