Chapter 456
Cassie found herself gazing blankly at David, her mind a whirlpool of confusion and disbelief. They were at Funland Oasis, known as New York's grandest amusement park, home to the world's most exhilarating rides and a castle that had cost an astronomical thirty billion dollars to construct. What she hadn't known was that it had been built as a tribute to Joseph's former love.
David's features softened with a tinge of pity. "The Summer Group's brand name itself is a homage to him and Megan Ray," he revealed. "Cassie, you may be the envy of many online, but in New York's elite circles, you're a subject of mockery. Were you aware of that?"
"Stop," Cassie implored, shaking her head, unable to digest any more of this bitter truth.
David, however, was not finished. His grip on her arm tightened as he continued, "There's more you don't know. Do you know why Brandon Wright targeted you?"
Cassie's lips quivered, but David didn't allow her to retreat. "The downfall of the Wright family was all because Joseph defended Nathan Zenith in court. Nathan Zenith, Megan Ray's brother, a man who has committed countless atrocities. Yet, Joseph was willing to abandon his principles for Megan."
Cassie froze, her heart constricting painfully. She had suspected as much, but hearing it from someone else made it unbearably real.
She had initially thought Joseph was driven by money. But these revelations, these truths about his past, made her heartache feel suffocating. When she discovered that Joseph was wealthy enough to rival any tycoon, she thought he had done it all for the thrill of victory. But no, it was all for an ex-lover. What did Megan Ray mean to him?
David sighed heavily, "That time, when you nearly lost your life, it was all because of Joseph's reprehensible actions, all for his ex-girlfriend. Why should we bear the consequences?"
"Stop," she interjected. Cassie feared she would lose her sanity if she heard any more.
"Cassie, I'm telling you all this because I want you to stay grounded. Don't sacrifice everything for Joseph, especially not your heart. He's not worth it unless he only has eyes for you. But you can't replace the dead."
"I will. Thank you," Cassie responded blankly, gently removing David's hand. "I just need some time alone to think."
"Okay..." David tenderly tucked a loose strand of hair behind her ear as she departed.
Only after Cassie had left the KFC, her face a mask of dejection, did David's tender gaze darken with gloom.

Meanwhile, in a deserted seaside villa, a lavish feast lay untouched on the table. Joseph hadn't even picked up a fork when his phone buzzed. A journalist acquaintance had sent him a few photos. They were pictures of Cassie and David at a KFC, sharing ice cream, another with David holding Cassie's hand. Even from a side angle, it was clear David looked affectionate while Cassie appeared desolate.
A perfect picture of an ex-couple lost in each other's company.
Joseph's suppressed anger erupted. He stood up, furiously sweeping all the dishes from the table.
