Chapter 1405 Why Lie
"Why'd Michael lie?"
"Is he sneakin' around behind my back, or is he plannin' a surprise for me?"
Laura really hoped it was the second one.
While Laura was in the lab the whole morning, she realized her research on the current project was goin' nowhere. She was so distracted she even messed up a few times.
Her assistant said, "Laura, if you're not feelin' well, you should head home and rest."
"Okay."
Laura knew her mind was all over the place and she wasn't in the best shape.
After changin' her clothes and headin' downstairs, she sat in her car for a long time before drivin' to the Jude Family's subsidiary.
This was where Michael had recently started workin'. She didn't come here often, but the receptionist at the entrance was sharp and probably recognized her from photos online. She immediately welcomed her in.
"Mrs. Jude, here to see Mr. Jude? He's on a business trip and hasn't come back yet," the receptionist said kindly.
Laura smiled slightly, "I know; I was just passin' by and came to see Aaron."
"He left about half an hour ago. Seems he's got a dinner engagement tonight," the receptionist said apologetically. "He probably won't be back today."
"Alright, I should've called him before comin'. Never mind."
Laura waved her hand with a smile and turned to leave the company, feelin' pretty bummed out.
It seemed like Michael had come back early but hadn't come to the company.
Of course, he might've gone to the Ocean Blue Group, but she didn't wanna go there anymore.
It felt pointless to keep pokin' around so cautiously.
Maybe she'd know the truth when Michael came back tonight.
After gettin' back to the villa, Laura waited until after dinner. She and the nanny bathed Maeve, and then she heard the sound of a car outside.
Soon, Michael walked in, draggin' a suitcase.
He was wearin' a white trench coat, his long legs makin' him look like a walkin' magazine cover.
Laura had seen plenty of male celebs in white before, but none of them wore it with the same aristocratic vibe as he did.
Some people were just born with it.
But today, Laura wasn't in the mood to admire his outfit 'cause she noticed that in the photo the socialite had sent her this mornin', he was clearly wearin' a beige jacket.
Why would a guy suddenly change his clothes outside?
Laura really didn't wanna think bad of him.
In her heart, Michael had no bad habits except for the dumb thing he did for Megan and their occasional arguments.
"Honey, Maeve, I'm back. Got you both gifts," Michael said as he hugged her and Maeve. "Didn't have time to shop myself, but Magnus told me the pearl necklaces over there were nice, so I got you one. And for Maeve, I got her a toy from the airport."
He took out the gifts. The pearl necklace was beautiful, and the toy was one that made sounds and could sing.
Maeve laughed and waved her hands when she heard the song.
"Look, Maeve likes it," Michael said as he held Maeve, playin' with her to make her happy. "Baby, did you miss Daddy? Daddy missed you." Michael kissed her little face.
Since havin' their daughter, this was the first time Michael had been away from her for several days, and he wasn't used to it.
Laura watched Michael from the side, feelin' all sorts of mixed-up emotions.
At first, she thought that when she got home in the afternoon, Michael would pop up outta nowhere and say he came back early to surprise her.
But as she waited at home all afternoon, her disappointment just kept growin'.
"What time was your flight?" she asked, tryin' to sound casual.
"Around five or six in the evening."
Michael looked down at his daughter, feelin' a bit guilty.
He had actually come back in the morning but had gone to investigate. He confirmed that Megan and Jacob had indeed slept separately that night.
He had really misunderstood Megan.
During their relationship, Megan hadn't done anything to betray him.
The things Megan had said were meant to provoke him into leavin' her.
Later, he went to see Megan and felt terrible seein' her livin' in a small apartment, compromisin'. So, he stayed for dinner with her before headin' back.
If it weren't for Megan's departure back then, he wouldn't have what he had today.
But his happiness came at the cost of Megan's sacrifice.
Thinkin' about his past proposal to Megan, he realized he had been wrong.
Now, all he could do was make it up to Megan in other ways.
"Did you have dinner?"
"I ate on the plane," Michael said, ticklin' Maeve's chin.
"I see." Laura forced a smile and went upstairs to take a bath.
That night, after Maeve fell asleep, Michael lay beside Laura. Initially, he felt guilty about Megan and wasn't in the mood for intimacy. But smellin' Laura's fragrance and not havin' been intimate for several days, he couldn't resist kissin' her. "Laura, did you miss me? I missed you so much."
Laura felt a bit repelled by his kisses.
Havin' experienced Benjamin's betrayal, she couldn't help but wonder why Michael had lied to her.
"Really? Did you miss me physically or emotionally?" Laura turned her face away, avoidin' his kiss.
"Both," Michael said, kissin' her cheek.
Her skin was perfect, like a peeled egg, and smelled nice.
"You missed me, but you barely answered my calls at Emerald Lakeside?" Laura stared at him. "I can understand durin' the day, but even at night when you were alone in the hotel?"
Michael stiffened and quickly said, "I only missed your call that one night. I drank too much and fell asleep when I got back to the hotel."
"You seemed to be havin' a great time out there. Who knows if you got drunk and pulled some woman into bed," Laura said sarcastically.
"Who would I pull into bed?" Michael looked aggrieved.
"Who knows? Anyway, Michael, there must be plenty of bosses tryin' to please you by sendin' women your way," Laura said in a strange tone.
"There were women givin' me flirty looks at the party, but I ignored them. Laura, don't think of me as so casual. If I were, how could I have saved my first time for you? To this day, besides you, I've never been with another woman."
Michael really felt wronged.
Even though he felt guilty towards Megan, he had never thought of betrayin' Laura.
He was quite serious about such matters and wasn't a casual person.
"Stop usin' that excuse to shut me up. Everyone has a first time," Laura said irritably. "Besides, after you have sex, you've been insatiable. Who knows if you have thoughts about other women outside."
"Only with you. I'm not like that outside," Michael said.
