Chapter 144
""Fine, jump if you want,” Joseph Hernandez taunted, tugging at his tie. He barked at Walter, “Step on it, we wouldn't want her to get any ideas about jumping out.”
Cassie: ""…""
Is this man the devil?
When Walter actually sped up, she glared at him, full of rage but decidedly lacking the courage to jump.
""Come here,” Joseph Hernandez said, motioning with a hooked finger upon seeing her finally settle down.
""Only if you don't tie me up,” Cassie retorted, her voice laced with unease.
“When did I say I'd tie you up? You're the one with wild ideas,” Joseph Hernandez snapped impatiently, yanking her by the arm to sit on his lap.
With the driver in front, Cassie blushed deeply. She didn’t dare fidget, opting instead for light conversation.
""What do you feel like eating today? I’ll make you anything you want as a thank you for helping me today.”
""Eat, eat, eat,” Joseph Hernandez uttered with a scoff, casting a sarcastic glance her way. A cold chuckle rumbled in his throat, “Is cooking all you have in your repertoire?""
Aghast, Cassie thought, isn’t that all you ever ask from me anyway?
Noticing her silence, he hummed, “Why were they here today?”
""I have no idea,” Cassie feigned innocence, batting her wide, pure eyes.
""No more seeing those two idiots,” Joseph Hernandez warned.
Cassie felt a flush of shame at his arrogant tone. She might agree that Arthur Lewis was a fool, but David was a successful young entrepreneur, for heaven's sake.
“Seems you don’t agree with me?” Joseph Hernandez’s eyebrows lifted, his gaze sharpening.
""Not at all,” Cassie quickly smoothed over, laying it on thick, “They’re nothing compared to you. You were so impressive in court today; I have no idea how you did it. You’ve exposed everything Alexander had done—I didn’t even know about those. My idol, so formidable.”
She gave a thumbs-up, admiration clear in her eyes.
But what she said was true; she thought the lawsuit was going to be a hard win. Alexander was cunning, had always covered his tracks well. Toppling him should have been nearly impossible.
Yet for Joseph Hernandez, it seemed like a walk in the park.
The woman's gaze shimmered a tad too brightly as she looked at him, prompting the corners of Joseph Hernandez's lips to curve up ever so slightly, lifting his spirits in an inexplicable way.
After countless legal battles, this one unexpectedly filled him with a sense of deep satisfaction.
One hand sprawled lazily across the backrest of the rear seat while the other casually twirled her chestnut locks cascading over her shoulder.
""Cut the crap. Do you have any idea how much effort I put into this case? The data, the evidence—every bit was hard-earned.""
""I know, it really took a lot out of you. Thank you,"" Cassie replied, feeling even more indebted to him.
Joseph gave her a sidelong glance, then suddenly massaged his temples, feigning exhaustion with an air of weariness and a single word: ""Tired.""
""Let me give you a massage,"" Cassie offered, quickly reaching up to knead his temples.
Joseph closed his eyes, seemingly surrendering to the quiet pleasure of the moment.
Up front, Walter's mouth twitched, stunned by Hernandez's audacity.
Yeah right, as if those documents were any trouble for you. You barely lifted a finger, while I've been running around doing the heavy lifting.
...
Back at the villa after the drive.
Cassie's hands were sore from the massage, but Joseph opened his eyes as they arrived. ""I'm going for a swim. You cook. Make plenty.""
