Chapter 542
Laura's laughter echoed in the room, a note of mockery in her tone. "Miss Ray, your talent for apologies is truly remarkable. If Cassie hadn't captured it all on record, it would have been easy for anyone to misconstrue that the dispute was initiated by Cassie and myself. In reality, Nathan is a rather gentle soul. Consequently, Cassie and Joseph could have been led to believe they were the instigators of the conflict."Joseph's brow furrowed in a tight frown, while Megan lifted her gaze, her face a picture of innocent confusion. "I apologize, I didn't give it much thought at the time. I'll be more mindful in the future.""Mindful, my foot! Laura, haven't you had enough?" Michael's patience had clearly worn thin."Enough," Joseph's voice cut through the tension, his gaze shifting to Nathan. "It appears my occasional assistance has led to a series of misunderstandings. Just yesterday, someone approached you regarding a billion-dollar project. I suspect they assumed we were on good terms and sought to gain my favor through you. I'll inform them that we won't be collaborating on that project."Nathan's face drained of color, his voice a panicked plea. "Joseph, I'm sorry, it's my fault. Please, don't cancel the project, I beg you."Laura's sneer was chilling. "You do have a knack for running your mouth. I recall you boasting at the bar that even if Cassie were to sleep with you, Joseph wouldn't dare lay a finger on you."Nathan's legs gave way, and he nearly collapsed."He said that?" Joseph's eyes narrowed dangerously as he turned to Cassie. Cassie's lips pressed into a thin line. "Do you think I would say something like that?"Joseph's gaze was icy as he regarded Nathan. Had it not been for the earlier recording revealing Nathan's blatant disrespect towards Cassie, he might not have believed it.
Suddenly, Joseph understood why he and Cassie had been at odds over Nathan. The realization that Nathan had been so brazenly insulting his woman was infuriating.
With a surge of anger, Joseph lashed out, kicking Nathan in the chest.
"Brother," Megan's face instantly turned ashen, "you need to apologize to Cassie immediately. You can't be so reckless with your words next time, or I won't stand up for you again."
"I'm sorry, Joseph, it was my fault," Nathan quickly dropped to his knees, bowing deeply to Cassie.
"Mrs. Rosalind, I won't dare to do it again."
"Joseph, let it go," Michael interjected, not in defense of Nathan, but out of concern for Megan's pallor.
"Remember, if there's a next time, I'll cut out your tongue. Also, I won't meddle in the affairs of the Zenith family anymore. Whether you choose to kill or set fire, it's none of my concern."
With a final cold statement, Joseph turned to Cassie and said softly, "Let's go. The affairs of William Zenith will be handled by his siblings. Michael, as Megan's father, you should lend a hand. Oh, and regarding Nina's mother's body, arrange for them to be buried together."
