Chapter 405
Once the room had emptied, Walter expelled a weary sigh that seemed to echo the weight of his years.
Mildred, ever the dutiful companion, offered him a glass of water. Her voice was laced with concern as she spoke. "Pops, you're not as young as you used to be. Perhaps it's time to pass the torch. Let's be honest, none of the younger generation can match Joseph. We can't afford to lose our standing to the Hernandez family."
Walter's chest heaved with a thump of frustration at her words. "That boy's defiance irks me to no end," he admitted, his voice gruff. "But he's got a fire in him. None of the Hernandez offspring can compete. Mabel's a strong contender, but she's no match for him."
Mildred's words were stark in their truth. "To stay at the top, one must be ruthless."
The scene shifted to a hotel parking lot.
As Cassie slid into the car, she found herself stealing glances at the man next to her, who was busy fastening his seatbelt.
He was driving a limited edition sports car that day, one that seemed to have been crafted specifically for his tall, athletic frame. His good looks were undeniable, and his presence at the engagement party had been nothing short of explosive.
Despite seeing him every day, her heart still fluttered in her chest like a schoolgirl's. So much for maintaining her composure.
Joseph caught her covert gaze once again, a playful grin tugging at his lips. "If you want to look, go ahead. I won't say a word."
Cassie feigned nonchalance, pretending to gaze out the window. "I'm not looking at you. I'm just stretching my neck. It's a bit stiff."
Joseph's handsome face lit up with delight as he gently squeezed her hand. "Admit it, you're captivated by your husband's good looks."
Cassie's retort was cut short as he turned her face towards him and silenced her with a kiss.
When would this man ever let up?
Cassie's lashes fluttered as she tried to push him away, but his charisma was too overpowering. She was hopelessly bewitched. Despite knowing better, she found herself succumbing to his charm time and time again. She had to admit, a man's power made him all the more alluring.
Like now.
...
A black sedan pulled up slowly beside the sports car. David, seated in the back, watched the couple inside the sports car.
With the windows half-rolled down, he could see Joseph leaning over the passenger seat, Cassie clinging tightly to his neck, both of them lost in a passionate kiss, oblivious to the world around them.
David's hand clenched into a fist involuntarily. His eyes blazed with fury.
So this was what Cassie meant when she said she had no choice but to go back to Joseph? She wouldn't even let her lips meet with someone else, yet with Joseph, she dived in so deeply.
In the end, she was only deceiving herself. She never truly wanted to leave Joseph. Despite the pain he had caused her, he was the only man she thought of.
Why had she given David hope in the first place?
A wave of hatred surged within David. He slowly rolled up the window, closing his eyes, refusing to witness any more. His voice was barely a whisper as he muttered, "Drive."
