Chapter 161

""Under my control?"" Joseph Hernandez's handsome face darkened with displeasure.

""My mistake,"" Noah Collins hastily corrected himself. ""But the Peace Group dares to harm you and expects to get away with it? I'll make sure their real estate projects crumble.""
""I've heard how Peace Group went from a humble start-up to a Fortune 500 juggernaut in just a few decades—all smooth sailing, thanks to some shadowy power backing it,"" Walter interjected suddenly.

Noah Collins' face was a mask of shock, while Joseph Hernandez pursed his thin lips, ""Yeah, Walter's got a point. Check it out for us—whether today's incident was an accident or someone's doing.""

Cassie blinked, ""It must have been an accident, right? I haven’t crossed anyone at Peace Group, except for the Brooks family, Charlotte Jones, and Sarah Randall... and I doubt Madison has either.""

There was a moment of silence.

A sardonic smile twitched at the corner of Noah Collins' mouth. ""You certainly haven't made many enemies, have you?"" His tone was just shy of overt arrogance.

Cassie flushed with embarrassment.

Joseph Hernandez gave her a sidelong glance, his tone brash, ""Doesn't matter. As long as you're under my watch, you could make enemies with the whole of Madison, and I’d still have your back.""

Cassie felt his words were arrogantly overconfident, yet...they sent a tremor through her heart.

She looked at him, her cheeks reddening further, at a loss for words.

On the sidelines, Walter and Noah Collins shared a helpless glance, feeling suddenly superfluous.

""Ahem, Walter, let's get going,"" Noah Collins coughed into his fist. ""If Joseph got hurt trying to save Cassie, then she'll surely take good care of him, right Cassie?""

""Sure, sure, I will,"" Cassie nodded hastily.

It was only after Walter and Noah Collins had left that she abruptly realized the difficulty she'd face taking care of Joseph Hernandez as a young woman.

But she had given her word; she couldn't back out now.

Luckily, the hospital room was as well-equipped as a grand apartment, complete with cooking facilities.

""Are you hungry? I can go get you something...""

""I could go for something light, maybe grilled chicken or fish?"" Joseph Hernandez, looking pale on the bed, glanced over at her.

Cassie rolled her eyes, ""Did you forget the doctor just warned against eating anything too greasy while you're recovering?""

""No worries. I'm resilient.""

""Not happening. I'm not making it, and I'll be managing your diet while you're in here,"" Cassie stated firmly, with a “my way or the highway” stance.

A playful smile lifted Joseph’s brows. He wasn’t upset but rather amused; the little spitfire had her bossy moments quite similar to his grandmother—overprotective, but it all came from a place of love.

""You just rest here; I'm going to pop over to the market for some ingredients.""
Cassie hurried downstairs, careful not to leave Joseph Hernandez alone for too long. She quickly bought what ingredients she could find nearby and rushed back.

Joseph eyed the groceries she brought in with a look of consternation. ""You expect me to eat this... this bare-bones meal?""

""I didn't have many options around here, and you asked for my cooking,"" Cassie said, her voice tinged with a mix of defensiveness and promise. ""Trust me, I'll make it delicious.""

With memories of her previous culinary feats, Joseph chose to bite his tongue and resigned himself to see how she would work her magic this time.

As Cassie ventured into the kitchen, Walter showed up.

""You're right on time. Bring me some decent food, will you?"" Joseph didn't beat around the bush. ""Fill up the fridge.""

""Sure thing,"" Walter grumbled internally, thinking 'It's not like he's moving in permanently.' Then, changing the subject, he added, ""I just returned from investigating the Peace Group. Those tiles fell because a worker didn't secure them properly while tiling the exterior.""
