Chapter 1275: I'll be good, I won't run
Cassie felt a quiet sympathy for Cameron and Mabel as she cruised to the hospital.
She had a hunch that Sophia and Oliver were gonna stir things up again.
But maybe that was a good thing. Cameron, despite being frosty to Mabel, had stayed single for decades and had no other women in his life. Maybe he hadn't really moved on from Mabel.
When Cassie pulled up at the hospital, it was pushing 8 p.m.
Cassie rushed into the ward. Joseph was curled up on his side, facing away from the door, with the dim light casting a lonely shadow over him.
Nathaniel stood up and gave her a helpless shrug.
Cassie nodded and tiptoed over.
She saw Joseph's handsome, clean face filled with hurt, sadness, and loneliness. His eyes were red like he was holding back tears, and his lips were pressed tight. He looked so pitiful, like he was sad but refusing to cry.
Cassie's heart almost melted at the sight.
She really couldn't handle a guy looking so adorable.
She walked over, sat on the edge of the bed, and ruffled Joseph's hair. "Why aren't you eating? You hungry?"
Joseph's eyes lit up instantly when he saw her, like a million stars twinkling in them.
If he had a tail, it would definitely be wagging like crazy.
"Cassie, you're back."
"Yeah." Cassie repeated her question, "Why aren't you eating?"
"I didn't wanna eat without you." Joseph pouted and shot a glance at Nathaniel, "I don't like him. He's not as good-looking as you."
Nathaniel looked helpless.
"Good looks can't be food." Cassie said softly, "And Nathaniel cares about you a lot."
"I don't want his care. I just want yours." Joseph looked at her with his clear, beautiful eyes.
Cassie felt her face heat up under his gaze, but she was too wiped out from everything that had happened today to get into any romantic talk. "How about I feed you?"
"Okay." Joseph nodded eagerly.
Nathaniel quickly handed over the lunchbox. "It's been kept warm, still hot."
"Thanks, Nathaniel. You can go rest now." Cassie said.
"But..." Nathaniel looked at her tired face and felt a bit reluctant.
"It's okay, he's easier to handle than Sophia." Cassie joked.
Nathaniel sighed inwardly and then left.
Cassie took a spoon and started feeding Joseph some soup.
Joseph had been hungry for a while, but he didn't want to eat without her. Now that she was back, he drank the soup eagerly.
After a bit, he suddenly asked, "Did you find Sophia?"
"Yeah, we did." Cassie replied.
Joseph nodded and then said seriously, "Sophia must have been running around. She's naughty."
Cassie smiled.
She couldn't explain to him that Sophia had been kidnapped.
Sometimes she thought it was actually good that Joseph had become less sharp; it meant he didn't have to face many things.
But it was exhausting for her. Sometimes she really wanted someone to lean on, but when Sophia went missing, she didn't even have the right to cry.
Even though Joseph's intelligence was low now, he could still notice her sudden unhappiness.
He quickly said, "Don't worry. I won't run around and make you worry."
"Good boy, Joey." Cassie patted his head. "But Sophia wasn't just running around; she got kidnapped. So you gotta stick close and not leave me, or some bad folks might snatch you too, and then you'll never see me again."
"Bad people suck." Joseph frowned angrily. "I'll be good. I won't run. Today, you told me to stay put, so I did."
"Yeah, you did awesome."
Cassie scooped up a spoonful of rice.
Joseph pushed the spoon towards her mouth. "Cassie, you eat too."
"Okay." Feeling his concern, Cassie felt a bit better.
Luckily, even though he wasn't as sharp as before, he still cared about people. And she was really hungry, like, starving.
After they finished eating, Cassie was beat. She quickly wiped him down and then lay on the bed with him to watch cartoons.
But she zonked out pretty soon.
Joseph turned to look at her. From his angle, Cassie looked so beautiful.
She had a face like an angel, with long eyelashes like feathers in a cartoon.
And her pink lips looked like jelly.
Joseph still remembered her taste, super sweet. Of course, the sweetest was inside her mouth.
As he thought about it, he suddenly felt hot and uncomfortable.
At first, he didn't wanna wake Cassie, but his tall, slender body couldn't help but toss and turn under the covers, and his breathing got more and more rapid.
Cassie opened her eyes and saw his flushed face.
She was startled and thought it was a side effect from falling down the stairs. "What's wrong? You feeling sick?"
"Yeah, suddenly I don't know what's wrong," Joseph said innocently. He grabbed her hand and pulled it under the covers.
Frustrated, Cassie thought, 'Joseph's got the mind of a two-year-old, but his body sure doesn't.'
"How did this happen all of a sudden?" She was really puzzled.
"I don't know either." Joseph looked at her pitifully. "Can you help me?"
"Sorry, sometimes you gotta handle it yourself, you know." Cassie pushed his hands under the covers. "I'm too tired. You deal with it."
Joseph felt super disappointed.
But seeing how tired Cassie was, he couldn't bear to trouble her and was scared she'd get mad. In the end, Joseph had to quietly handle it himself.
Military Hospital.
After bringing Isabella here, Declan immediately had the doctors run a full check-up on her.
In less than three hours, all the test results were laid out in front of him.
"Mrs. Wittelsbach's organs and brain are perfectly fine. In fact, she's in excellent health." The doctor paused and pulled out a lab report from the medical records. "However, we found traces of a banned substance in her blood. I wanna ask if Mrs. Wittelsbach has been taking any medication regularly."
Declan's lips immediately formed a cold, hard line. "As far as I know, no. You said it yourself, she's in excellent health. When she was living abroad, she rarely even caught a cold and exercised daily."
"That's strange," the doctor said. "The banned substance we found is usually used in meds for post-surgery patients or those with chronic mental health issues. And this type of medication isn't meant for long-term use."
