Chapter 468
It was clear that she wouldn't be able to compete with Megan, whether she was dead or alive — especially if she were alive.
---
At the hospital.
Joseph stirred, awakening to find an IV drip feeding saline into his vein. He blinked, Michael's voice drifting in from the next room.
"I've always said that Cassie was trouble. Joseph is this sick, and she has the audacity to send over divorce papers, without a thought for his well-being."
"Keep your voice down. What if Joseph wakes up and hears you?"
"Am I wrong, though? She's ungrateful. Joseph has given her everything, and yet she still competes with a ghost."
"..."
"Joseph, you're awake!" Joyce Ray exclaimed with joy upon noticing his open eyes.
The voices from the next room ceased, and shortly after, Michael and Lucas entered, both wearing uneasy expressions.
"Let me see the divorce papers," Joseph demanded, extending his hand.
Michael hesitated before handing them over. Joseph skimmed through the document. Cassie asked for nothing; she merely wanted his signature, ready to leave with nothing more than the clothes on her back.
His fingers tightened around the papers, and he tore the agreement to shreds.
Everyone's faces registered varying degrees of shock, Joyce Ray attempting to offer consolation, "Joseph, don't worry. Rosalind is just upset at the moment. She'll regret it once she cools down."
"Leave," Joseph ordered, feeling another headache coming on at the sound of her voice.
Joyce Ray's expression froze, and Michael, clearly upset, retorted, "Joseph, what are you saying? Cassie didn’t even bother to check on you after you passed out. It was Joyce Ray who brought you to the hospital."
"So what, I should marry her now?" Joseph’s icy gaze met Michael's. "If you're so keen on defending her, why don't you marry her yourself?"
Michael was left speechless.
Tears streamed down Joyce Ray's cheeks as she stammered, "Michael, stop arguing, both of you. I feel guilty, too. If it wasn’t for me, none of this would have happened between you and Joseph. I’m going back to the hospital."
Joseph’s lips pressed into a tight line, and he remained silent throughout.
"Joyce Ray, let me accompany you," Michael sighed and followed her out.
Lucas massaged his temples, "What do you plan to do?"
"I can't let Cassie go. It's clear to me now, she's the one I love," Joseph muttered, visibly agitated by the flashbacks before his collapse. "It was my mistake, perhaps... I shouldn't have kept Joyce Ray around, but I never imagined she would think so lowly of me. To assume Joyce Ray and I slept together, what was she thinking?"
"Perhaps Nina misled her," Lucas suggested, his brow furrowing.
"That Nina..." Joseph clenched his fists, "I won't show her any mercy. Issue the order, I want the Zenith Family bankrupt within a month."
"I disagree. If Cassie finds out, it’ll only drive a deeper wedge between you," Lucas countered, "The Zenith Family is already on the brink of collapse, it won’t last much longer anyway."
"Fine." A sharp pain shot through Joseph’s temple. "You've got more experience, tell me, how do I win her back?"
"Hold on, I'll send you a few tips on how to charm a woman."
Lucas sent several files to his phone. Joseph studied them intently for a while, until Rosalind arrived in the evening to cook.
