Chapter 1554 She Fell in Love with Derek

"Carl, I'll try to talk to Derek tonight," Laura said quickly.

"Don't bother. Derek won't listen to anyone," Carl snorted, clearly not taking her seriously.

When they got back home, Derek still wasn't there. Laura called him. "Where are you? When are you coming back?"

"I'm out drinking and chatting with friends. Are you back at the Presidential Palace? I'll head back now," Derek replied hurriedly.

Laura sighed, "Didn't Carl ask you to have dinner at the Jude Estate? And you still went out drinking? Is this the friend everyone thinks you're gay with?"

"Yeah," Derek chuckled, "I'll introduce you to him another day. We've been good friends for years, even though his orientation is different from mine."

"Can you come back quickly?" Laura said, exasperated. "Your grandfather was really mad tonight, and Carl said he's transferring you to a grassroots position tomorrow."

"I know, that's why I didn't go," Derek said nonchalantly. "I'll be home in forty minutes."

At ten o'clock, the lights in Derek's building finally turned on.

Laura rushed over. As soon as she walked in, Derek hugged her and pressed his wine-flavored lips to hers.

"Miss me?" Derek tightened his grip on her waist, kissing her in a way that made her legs tremble.

Laura's heart raced. He was kissing her right at the doorway.

"Stop it, this is the Presidential Palace. What if someone sees us?" She quickly pushed him away.

"It's fine. I don't like being disturbed. No one comes to this building except for the maids during the day, and the back door is closed," Derek said, moving his kisses to her earlobe.

A shiver ran through her body. Laura bit her lip and pushed his head away a bit, "Didn't you hear what I said earlier? Carl isn't joking."

"Going to the grassroots is fine," Derek said, kissing her forehead. "It's not busy there, so I'll have more time to spend with you."

"Derek, stop joking," Laura stared at him. "You're the President's son. How can you work at the grassroots level? People will laugh at you."

"Then what do you want me to do?" Derek looked straight into her eyes.

"I think your family is really worried that you're gay. But you're not. I think you can assure them that you won't see that friend anymore," Laura hesitated. "Of course, since you are good friends, it's impossible not to see him at all, but you can avoid being seen together."

Before she could finish, Derek laughed, "Laura, it's not that simple. My parents won't believe me. They'll just force me to marry another woman to prove it."

"Who told you to start those gay rumors in the first place?" Laura complained.

"If I hadn't said I liked men, would you have let me get close to you without any guard?" Derek cupped her face gently. "You're a bit dull, but if I were too nice and caring, you'd be suspicious."

"You're so scheming," Laura's face puffed up as he cupped it.

She scolded him, but her eyes were soft and gentle.

Derek smiled, "Laura, I've told you before, I don't see my position as that important. I never thought I had to climb to a certain rank."

He looked at her tenderly, "The grassroots isn't bad. There are plenty of grassroots positions in Madison. Are those people unhappy? And trust me, this place isn't for me. Worst case, I'll go into business. I know I can succeed there, too, as long as you don't mind."

"I don't mind. You're amazing. I believe you can do anything," Laura said, looking into his eyes and realizing he really didn't care. "I just don't want you to regret it later."

"If I don't care about it, then I won't regret it. The only thing I'd regret is letting go of you." Derek smiled at her.

Something in her heart, long dormant, seemed to come alive.

Seeing her silence, Derek leaned in and kissed her again.

This time, she didn't push him away. She trembled and gently hugged his waist, their kiss deepening.

They kissed in the brightly lit living room.

She knew she had fallen for Derek.

She had sensed it for a while but didn't want to admit it.

She was scared, yet the things she feared were often the most enticing.

She had hesitated and wandered, but she was still young and wanted to be brave and try again.

Even if she failed, it wouldn't be the end of the world.

She had failed before, and at most, her heart would hurt again.

Having made up her mind, she stood on tiptoe to kiss him back.

Derek's body trembled with excitement.

But then, the doorbell rang, and Violet's voice cut through the moment like cold water. "Derek, open the door. I need to talk to you."

Laura panicked and pushed Derek away, wiping her reddened lips, her face flushed.

"Go to the kitchen and get some water," Derek said, quickly calming down. He noticed her half-open nightgown and buttoned it up for her.

As he did, he let out a frustrated growl in his mind.

Why did Violet have to show up now? He was so close to touching Laura's chest.

Laura couldn't stay any longer. She quickly ducked into the kitchen with her head down.

Derek took a deep breath, regained his composure, and opened the door.

"Why did you take so long to open the door?" Violet walked in with a cold expression.

"Mom, if you want to tell me something, there's no need. Laura came earlier and told me." Derek pointed to Laura, who was making tea in the kitchen.

Violet glanced over and noticed her.

After a while, Laura came out with tea. Facing Violet, she felt guilty and uneasy, stammering, "Violet, I'll head back now."

Violet, thinking Laura didn't want to delay their conversation, nodded.

After returning, Laura sent Derek a message, asking him to contact her after Violet left.

After Maeve fell asleep, she received his message: [My mom just left.]
