Chapter 1461 It Was Bernice

After a moment, the subordinate mumbled, "Honestly, those guys picked the worst time to act. The hospital's crawling with cameras; they're bound to leave evidence."

Lucas took a long drag from his cigarette.

Yeah, they jumped the gun. Way too soon.

Even Joseph held back.

"Alright, got it. You can go now. Keep tabs on Michael's progress and let me know if anything comes up," Lucas said.

Once the subordinate left, Lucas dialed another number. "Find out where Bernice was last night, ASAP. I need all the details. Use whatever means necessary and get back to me in twenty minutes."

Lucas stood by the window, his mind racing.

He remembered seeing Laura and Bernice at the club a few days ago. The bartender mentioned Bernice had crushed a glass.

He also remembered Bernice kissing him yesterday, just to meet Megan.

After meeting Megan, she couldn't wait to get away from him.

Lucas chuckled coldly.

Ten minutes later, his phone rang. "Mr. Nelson, Ms. Ramsey had dinner with Lachlan last night until a bit after 8 PM. Later, her car entered a local neighborhood. Her car's still there, but she's not, and her phone's off. I checked the neighborhood's surveillance; five minutes after her car went in, an unmarked car drove out. That car then turned onto a newly built road with no cameras, so we lost track."

"Send someone there in person. Follow that new road and see if there are any suspicious cars parked in nearby houses or factories."

After giving the orders, Lucas quickly changed out of his work clothes.

A fellow doctor had just come in for his shift when Lucas tossed him his car keys. "Where's your car parked? Let's swap for the day."

The doctor stared at the Maybach keys in his hand for a few seconds before handing Lucas his Volvo keys.

"Don't mention the car switch to anyone." With that, Lucas quickly left.

As he neared the Presidential Palace, he called Laura. "Laura, it's Lucas. I need to talk to you about something important. Can you come out? I'm waiting at the entrance."

Laura was brushing her teeth when she got Lucas's call and was puzzled. Were they even that close? "Can't you just tell me over the phone? Michael's not in your car, is he?"

"If you want to save Bernice, get dressed and come out now. Don't tell anyone; it'll only put Bernice in more danger," Lucas urged.

Laura was really freaked out. She had no clue what was going on, but she quickly wiped her face, threw on some clothes, and ran out.

In the garden, she bumped into Derek, who had just finished his run. He was in white sportswear and frowned at her rushed appearance. "Where are you off to so early? Is Maeve awake?"

"Maeve's still sleeping. I have an urgent matter. If Kennedy can't handle it, please look after Maeve for me," Laura said and dashed towards the entrance.

A Volvo was parked under a tree nearby. Lucas opened the car door, and she ran over and got in. "What happened to Bernice?"

"How well do you know Bernice?" Lucas turned to look at her, his gaze intense and probing.

Laura was taken aback. Truth be told, she didn't know Bernice all that well. Laura was the type to speak her mind, while Bernice kept things close to the vest.

"Looks like you don't know your friend that well either," Lucas said, a hint of mockery in his voice.

"I may not know Bernice inside out, but I know she's not a hypocrite. She might be quiet, but she values her friends. I'd do anything for her," Laura said, her anxiety mounting. "Just tell me what's going on, or I'll call her myself."

"You won't be able to reach her," Lucas said, one hand resting on the steering wheel. "Did Cassie tell you about Megan's disappearance?"

Laura's eyes widened. "Megan is missing?"

Lucas saw her reaction and nodded. "She went missing last night. Looks like Cassie didn't want to wake you and kept it to herself. Last night, Michael lost it and took EchoReach's people to the Hernandez House, thinking Joseph had kidnapped Megan. It had nothing to do with Joseph, but Michael doesn't believe it. He's already called the cops and is investigating at the hospital. When I left, they seemed to have found some clues about the kidnappers."

Laura was speechless, struggling to process everything that had happened overnight.

She didn't know whether to feel more disappointed or angry.

She had always known how important Megan was to Michael, but every time he did something for Megan, it shattered her understanding.

Her recent marriage felt like a joke.

They weren't even divorced yet, and Michael was already causing a scene for Megan. Did he ever consider her and their child's feelings?

In this lifetime, Michael would always be willing to do anything for Megan. He could go crazy and break ties with friends.

She and the child were just extra baggage.

"Let him investigate then," Laura sneered. "What does this have to do with Bernice?"

"It does," Lucas said, looking at her. "I found out that Bernice kidnapped Megan."

Laura's mind went blank. "Impossible. Did Bernice do it to avenge me? How could she be so foolish? I hate Megan, but it's not worth it."

Laura choked up after saying that. She didn't expect Bernice to do something so crazy for her.

If Bernice were a man, Laura would definitely marry her.

Lucas was speechless for a moment. Did all women have such vivid imaginations?

"You're overthinking it. Bernice and Nina were childhood friends, and she probably knows Esmeralda well too," Lucas reluctantly revealed. "Did you say something to her when you were drinking that day?"

Laura, who had been silently moved, said nothing.

Alright, she had overthought it.

But Laura was shocked to learn that Bernice and Nina were childhood friends. Why had Nina never mentioned it before?

No wonder Bernice had crushed the glass that day.

Bernice must have been very angry at the time.

But when Laura thought about how she and Cassie were also Nina's good friends, she felt ashamed that she couldn't do what Bernice did. "Mr. Nelson, tell me how I can help Bernice. I'll do anything."
