Chapter 1564 Do You Have Any Sense of Shame?
Michael thought back to what Bernice had told him.
Bernice had said that Megan knew it wasn't Laura who kidnapped her. But who could he really trust?
One thing was clear: Bernice was definitely the real culprit.
"Megan, it wasn't Laura who kidnapped you," Michael said softly, looking into her eyes.
Megan froze. She knew Laura hadn't kidnapped her, but after she woke up, Michael had told her it was Laura. Megan was disfigured and crippled, so she naturally wanted to blame Laura. Only by making Michael believe Laura was evil would he completely give up on her.
But how did Michael find out now?
A million thoughts raced through Megan's mind. After a few seconds, she pretended to be confused and said, "How is that possible? Didn't you say you caught her red-handed when you came to rescue me? Laura hates me. She thought I wanted to ruin your marriage, so she tried to destroy me in such a horrible way."
As she spoke, Megan held her head in pain. "It was a nightmare for me. I never want to remember it for the rest of my life."
Michael felt sorry for her and for himself.
It was a nightmare for Megan, and it was no less for him.
He was exhausted and didn't have the energy to comfort Megan. "I always thought it was Laura, but today I found out that the person who kidnapped you was Bernice, not Laura. She just took the blame for Bernice."
"What?" Megan couldn't keep up the act. She widened her eyes in disbelief. "Impossible. I don't even know Bernice. I have no grudge against her. Is it Laura trying to get back at you by deceiving you this way?"
"No, Bernice was Nina's childhood friend. Lucas protected her behind the scenes, and with Laura taking the blame, I never suspected her. I checked, and on the day of the incident, Laura was at the Presidential Palace and had no contact with the kidnappers," Michael explained to Megan.
Megan was completely stunned. She never thought it was Bernice who harmed her.
'Bernice is also involved with Nina, that wretched woman?' Megan thought angrily.
Megan had to get back at Bernice for what she did.
But now, the only person Megan could rely on was Michael. After Michael knew Laura didn't kidnap her, he would surely think of Laura and their child again. She couldn't let that happen.
After quickly making up her mind, Megan broke down and cried, "How could this happen? Why would Laura take the blame for Bernice? She's helping a criminal cover up the truth. No wonder Bernice was so fearless. What did I do wrong? Nina's death has nothing to do with me. I don't want anything to happen to the Zenith family either. Now, I'm the only one left in the Zenith family without any relatives. Who knows my suffering?"
After crying, Megan hurriedly grabbed Michael's hand. "Michael, you must report this to the police. Bernice can't get away with this."
"It's no use. It's been so long that Lucas has already destroyed all the evidence for Bernice. Bernice is now Lucas's woman," Michael said softly.
"But Lucas is your friend. Are you saying you can't do anything against Bernice?" Megan bit her lip in disbelief. "If Bernice isn't caught and sent to prison, with Lucas backing her and Laura helping, she might find ways to come after me. Michael, I'm so scared."
Michael struggled to find the words, finally managing to say in a low voice, "No, she wouldn't. And I won't let her hurt you."
Megan threw herself into his arms, sobbing loudly, "Michael, why is this happening to me? There's no justice in this world. Those who hurt me can't be punished. Laura can hate me, she can kill me, but why would she cover for the culprit?"
Michael was stunned and then fell silent.
He had only thought about Laura not kidnapping Megan but forgot that Laura was helping the real culprit.
Bernice's actions were undoubtedly criminal, and if she wasn't severely punished, she might become even more reckless in the future.
The next morning, Michael went to DreamDazzle Beauty Co. early. He waited in the parking lot for nearly an hour before seeing Laura's car drive in.
Soon, Laura came out carrying her bag, wearing a pair of vintage jeans that showcased her slender legs and curves. She paired it with a light-colored shirt and a cashmere vest. Her slightly curly hair was neatly tied into a bun, and she wore diamond-studded pearl earrings, exuding a youthful and sunny vibe. She didn't look like a woman who had given birth.
Michael was stunned. The last time he saw Laura was before Christmas, and she was wearing a heavy down jacket. Now that spring had arrived, she seemed to be glowing with vitality.
He vaguely felt that Laura's aura was different from before. She was now more radiant and dazzling, though he couldn't pinpoint exactly why.
After a moment of daze, when Laura was about to enter the building, he quickly got out of the car and rushed over, "Laura."
Hearing the familiar voice, Laura instinctively wanted to quicken her pace. She didn't want to deal with Michael, but thinking that he had come all the way here, he would probably catch up.
She paused, turned around, and saw Michael's unshaven face, frowning.
She remembered that Michael used to be more meticulously groomed than TV stars. In his thirties, he looked like someone in his mid-twenties. Now, she didn't know if it was because his life with Megan was getting worse or he had too many company troubles. He hadn't paid much attention to his appearance before. His clothes were even wrinkled, his eye bags were heavy, and his hair was unkempt, making him look older than his actual age.
She used to like Michael largely because of his handsome appearance.
Men liked beautiful women, and women also liked handsome men.
Moreover, she had just parted ways with Derek in the morning. After Derek's handsome face flashed in her mind, she felt a sense of disdain for Michael's appearance for the first time.
"What's the matter?" she asked calmly.
Michael looked at her young and beautiful face, his chest aching, and said hoarsely, "Why did you let Derek answer my call last night? Did he block me? I'm Maeve's father. How could he block me without my permission?"
"I blocked you," Laura said flatly, "A married man calling me nonstop late at night? Not a good look. Derek also told you that if you want to see Maeve, you can go to the Presidential Palace. I don't think we need to keep in touch all the time."
Michael, feeling embarrassed, blurted out, "If you know it's wrong to talk to me late at night, why don't you see the issue with being alone with Derek at that hour? Don't you have any sense of shame?"
