Chapter 496

Joseph remained silent, his mind filled with regret. If he had known the outcome, he would never have confided in those two individuals.

As the two elders departed, he fixed his gaze on Cassie, his eyes accusing. "You did that intentionally," he stated.

Cassie met his glare with a defiant lift of her chin. "Yes," she admitted, "I did."

She continued, "Joseph, your memory might be hazy, but I remember all too well what happened during my pregnancy. It's safer for me at the villa, away from the warnings of your friends. And if your situation worsens, it won't be on my conscience."

A flash of anger sparked in Joseph's usually impassive eyes.

He instantly understood that Lucas and Michael must have wronged her in some way. Despite his attempts to dissuade them, they had been like brothers to him for over a decade, their concern for him genuine.

"I'm sorry..." Joseph apologized, guilt tingeing his words.

Cassie dismissed his apology. "There's no need for apologies. I just don't feel valued. If you were considering my feelings, I would accept it. But you're keeping so many secrets from me. Why should I bear the weight of your health issues and endure unhappiness, all for the sake of your schemes with Joyce?"

After voicing her frustrations, Cassie retreated to the bed, her desire for solitude clear.

She was seething with anger, Lucas's threat involving Leo Chapman still fresh in her mind.

The following morning dawned.

A driver from the villa arrived to collect Cassie.

The butler led Cassie to the room Joseph had previously occupied.

Cassie had seen this room before, but it was now transformed. Two luxurious armchairs, an extra television, and cashmere rugs had been added, and fresh flowers adorned the room.

"It looks different," Joseph observed, puzzled.

"Grandma thought the room was too bare for a pregnant woman," the butler explained. "She had a designer add a few touches overnight."

The butler then turned to Joseph. "Your room is in the next building."

Joseph bristled at this. "Why should I move to another building? I want to stay next door," he insisted, his teeth gritted.

"No, the matriarch is worried you might sneak in at night," the butler responded.

Frustration surged within Joseph. "Enough. I will stay next door, that's my final decision. Otherwise, I'll take Cassie away."

The butler paused, then acquiesced. "Very well."

Later that afternoon, Cassie awoke around 4 p.m.

Rosalind brought Cassie a bowl of bird's nest soup. After finishing her meal, Cassie decided to take a stroll in the courtyard.

The Hernandez family's estate was undeniably expansive, the air remarkably fresh.

She hadn't been walking long when she spotted Celeste and Celeste’s daughter, Juliette, returning to the estate.
