Chapter 1233 Single On Your Own Merit
"I messed up. I'll pay right now." Michael wished he could swallow those words back.
After coughing up the cash, he tagged along with Laura to get her blood drawn.
Seeing all those vials getting filled, he got a bit queasy. "Why the heck do you need so much blood for a prenatal checkup?"
The nurse gave him a blank stare. "That's just how it is, buddy. The further along the pregnancy, the more tests we gotta run to make sure mom and baby are all good."
Michael pressed his lips together. After the blood draw, he turned to Laura, all serious, "I'll go grab a chicken and make you some soup later."
Laura shot him a complicated look, "Thanks, that kinda reminds me of my mom."
Wait, what? Was she comparing him to her mom?
Michael, feeling like he'd just been doused with ice water, snapped, "Please, just zip it."
"Did you just tell me to shut up?" Laura narrowed her eyes.
"No, I meant I get why you've been single for so long," Michael shot back sarcastically.
Laura, who'd been single for ages, flared up. "What gives you the right to say that? Haven't you been single for over a decade too? At least I haven't been single as long as you."
"That's 'cause I'm older than you, duh."
"Good that you know you're older. It's your privilege to marry a young and beautiful woman like me," Laura retorted.
The nurse at the window looked at them, exasperated. "Please, if you're gonna argue, take it outside. There's a line behind you."
They turned around, stunned, to see a long line of people watching the show.
A lady smiled and said, "Alright, cut it out. You two make a cute couple. With looks like yours, your baby will be gorgeous."
"Yeah, guys should cut pregnant women some slack. It's normal for them to be moody. My wife's temper was even worse," a man chimed in knowingly.
They both felt a bit embarrassed.
Michael quickly ducked his head, looking all repentant, and then hustled Laura away.
Upstairs, he cleared his throat. "From now on, I'll let you have your way. No more arguing."
"What do you mean? Am I the one who wants to argue? You started it," Laura shot back indignantly.
Michael felt helpless.
"Sorry, my bad. I shouldn't have said that. Actually, I kinda like that you were single before; otherwise, how would I have had a shot?" Michael forced a smile.
Laura felt a bit better. "Good that you know."
She then went for her checkup.
Michael stuck with her the whole time.
But the checkup hit a snag 'cause they couldn't get a clear picture of the baby's face.
Laura had to eat chocolate and climb stairs. After an hour of effort, the baby finally turned, and they got a picture of its face.
When the results came out, Michael was over the moon. "Is this my daughter? She's so beautiful."
Laura raised an eyebrow. "How do you know it's a girl? Did you ask Lucas?"
Michael blinked, caught off guard. "Lucas didn't spill anything. I just figured with those delicate features, it had to be a girl."
Laura's mouth twitched. "I didn't know you were a gender expert."
Michael awkwardly scratched his nose and then tapped the photo. "You kept hiding your face, making your mom climb up and down for hours. You better be good to her in the future, got it?"
Laura gave him a complicated look, probably not expecting him to be so thoughtful.
She'd been feeling pretty down, but his words suddenly lifted her spirits.
Michael suddenly leaned in close and said seriously, "Laura, I used to think prenatal checkups were a breeze. Seeing you today, with the blood draw and all that stair climbing, I realize I was a jerk before. I didn't step up as a husband. From now on, I'll be good to you and the baby. I'll be there for every checkup, and if you're ever uncomfortable, just tell me."
Laura was stunned and turned her head. His handsome face was right up in her space.
She remembered reading in a magazine that his type of lips was super kissable, and her heart started pounding like crazy.
She scolded herself inwardly, 'What am I thinking? Just 'cause he's handsome, does that mean he can get away with a few sweet words?'
"Laura," Michael suddenly called her name, leaning even closer.
"What are you doing?" Laura felt her heart racing, wondering if her face was turning red.
She touched her face, and yep, it was burning up.
"You seem to have gained some weight," Michael suddenly said, "Your cheeks are all puffy." He found it adorable but didn't dare say it out loud.
Laura was speechless.
She must be losing it to have her heart race and her face blush because of Michael's words.
Michael was just someone who needed a good smack every now and then.
"Yeah, I've gained weight. I've gained over ten pounds carrying your baby." Laura stomped on Michael's foot, making him yelp in pain, and then she stormed off.
Back at the Jude Villa, Laura angrily called Cassie to vent, "Michael said I was single on my own merit. I think he is too. Without Megan in the picture, he wouldn't be able to find a girlfriend either."
Cassie was speechless. "I think you both are single on your own merit. Just stop bickering."
Laura was a bit frustrated. "Are you even my friend?"
"I'm just telling it like it is." Cassie sighed. "Although Michael has his flaws, he did say he'd make chicken soup for you after you got your blood drawn. You said he reminded you of your mom. Why didn't you say he was like your mom?"
Laura went silent.
"Wait, why are you defending Michael now? Didn't you dislike him before?" Laura suddenly asked.
"Remember when he went to the club with us last time? He stood up for you and fought with Dale. I thought he had some guts. Maybe he messed up a lot before, but now he's trying to be a good dad and husband," Cassie said.
