Chapter 1754 Disappointment
She was now Nina, but she was stuck in Bernice's body. Even though her soul had changed, some things just couldn't be erased.
She couldn't wrap her head around it. When she first woke up, she made sure everything was wiped clean. Almost no one outside knew about it, so how...
Suddenly, Bernice saw her own scandal blow up on the trending list. The news about Dreamscape Entertainment Group getting fined yesterday and Sarah's dirt had quietly vanished from the list. In a flash, Bernice got it.
She had become the company's scapegoat.
A wave of disappointment hit her hard.
It felt just like when she was framed for murder and got caught.
"Bernice, what do we do now?" Gabriella was freaking out, "Fiona's already gone to the company to find Mr. Jenkins, hoping they can squash the trending list."
"Find Mr. Jenkins?"
Bernice looked at Gabriella like she had just heard the funniest joke, "Does Fiona really know nothing?"
"Know what?" Gabriella looked puzzled.
"This whole mess was set up by Dreamscape Entertainment Group." Bernice laughed bitterly, "Look, a superstar's scandal is so juicy it immediately took the heat off Dreamscape Entertainment Group's issues."
Gabriella was stunned and then in disbelief, "The company must be nuts. You bring in the most money every year!"
"No one is irreplaceable." Bernice put down her phone. "I'm gonna change clothes, have breakfast, and then head to the company."
"You still have the appetite for breakfast?" Gabriella was almost losing it.
"What else can I do? My career's almost over, should I starve myself to death too?"
Bernice turned away coldly. If it had been the old her, she might have lost it and done something crazy.
But she had already faced death; what was there to fear?
She just felt really sorry for the real Bernice.
What did the real Bernice do wrong? She just fell for the wrong guy and ended her own life over a relationship, destroying her true self.
In the end, everyone labeled that relationship as her being Gary's plaything.
It was so unfair.
And all this unfairness was brought to Bernice by Lucas.
In the dressing room, Bernice changed into casual clothes, fried an egg herself, and cooked a bowl of pasta.
While having breakfast, Cassie called, "Bernice, are you okay?"
That simple question of concern made Bernice's cold heart feel a bit of warmth.
"You don't doubt me at all?" Bernice was a bit surprised.
Cassie sounded a bit hurt, "You don't trust me as a friend? Didn't you tell me before? If I don't believe you, should I believe what people online say? I'm asking if you're okay mainly because I want to know if you're hurt by how the company treated you."
"You know about it, too." Bernice's lips curled slightly.
"Obviously, this kind of thing coming out now is just to divert attention." Cassie was also really pissed, "I used to think Lucas was just a bit heartless and cold, but now I see he's utterly shameless and has no bottom line."
"Would someone who isn't shameless and has a bottom line have his current status?" Bernice mocked.
Cassie felt more and more heartbroken. "Don't worry, I'll find a way to help you squash the trending list. Also, I'll contact the Ross family to make sure no one bothers you. As for Lucas, although I can't bring him down, I can make things difficult for him.""No need," Bernice said firmly, "His relationship with Joseph is special. Don't make things tough for Joseph."
"Someone like Lucas, I'll make sure Joseph keeps his distance," Cassie fumed, "So he doesn't corrupt Joseph."
"Joseph's known Lucas for decades. If he were going to be corrupted, it would've happened already. Cassie, listen to me. When Joseph was at his lowest, Lucas didn't abandon him. If you make Joseph distance himself from Lucas now because of me, it would be heartless and unfair. This is between me, Lucas, and Dreamscape Entertainment Group. I don't want you getting involved."
"But..."
"Trust me, I'll handle it," Bernice said seriously, "Don't try to suppress the trending list with fake accounts. This thing has already blown up. If people find out you're trying to suppress it, it'll only make them angrier. It's better to face it head-on."
"Alright," Cassie said reluctantly. She wasn't very familiar with the entertainment industry, but since Bernice said so, she must have a plan. "If you need any help, call me anytime."
After hanging up, Cassie glared at Joseph, who had just finished washing up.
Joseph's handsome face showed a bit of guilt and appeasement, "Honey, I really didn't know about this. I never thought Lucas would do such a thing. Should I go talk to him?"
"Talk about what?" Cassie was furious just looking at him, "The whole world knows now. Everyone is cursing Bernice. Have you seen the things people are saying online? They're so nasty. Bernice's reputation in the entertainment industry is ruined. Not only that, because she's a public figure, she'll carry the label of being Gary's plaything for the rest of her life. How is she supposed to find a partner in the future?"
"Lucas is utterly shameless. Even if he doesn't love Bernice, at least she was his woman."
"Your friends, Lucas and Michael, are all scumbags, each worse than the other."
Cassie got angrier as she spoke, "Now I see why you used to be so heartless and unfair to me."
Facing Cassie's barrage of anger, Joseph wished he could kneel on the spot, "Honey, I'm not like them. Among my friends, Noah is actually quite nice. You and Noah have always gotten along well, haven't you?"
Cassie snorted, "I can't do anything about Lucas, but don't even think about getting into my bed this month."
She stormed off after saying that.
Sophia walked over to Joseph, looking amused. "Dad, what did you do to make Mom angry again?"
"Bad choice of friends," Oliver answered coolly as he walked by.
Joseph's mouth twitched. He couldn't help but call Lucas, "You've really screwed me over this time, Lucas. Did you do this to Bernice?"
"Don't bother me, I'm still not fully awake," Lucas's voice was hoarse and sleepy.
Joseph was almost infuriated, "You still have the mood to sleep?"
"Bernice isn't worth losing sleep over," Lucas's voice was particularly cold.
Joseph was speechless. He had been unsure before, but now he was certain, "Lucas, aren't you going too far? We can be ruthless in our actions, but we can't be without a bottom line. Besides, Bernice is your woman."
"She's also my employee. Besides, isn't this something she did?" Lucas said indifferently, "You should also tell Cassie not to be too sincere with Bernice. It's not worth it."
