Chapter 1745 Disgusting
"What's up with Lucas that should make me mad?" Bernice's disgust was written all over her face.
She had never despised anyone so much.
Laura rarely saw such a strong reaction from her and couldn't help but ask, "Does Lucas really gross you out that much?"
"Don't even use the word 'grossed out'." Bernice replied bluntly, "I'm nauseated."
Laura went quiet.
She felt really bad for Bernice. It must be awful to be stuck dealing with someone you can't stand.
Laura suggested, "Cassie, why don't the three of us come up with a plan to take Lucas down? You're so capable, and you have the Wittelsbach family backing you."
Cassie almost choked on her drink, "Laura, thanks for the vote of confidence. I'm really touched."
Bernice chimed in, "In Madison, there are two big players: the Jude family and the Nelson family. A lot of Madison's top medical systems rely on the Nelson family. They've invested in private hospitals all over the country. Every year, they send top doctors abroad to study. Plus, they donate to medical schools nationwide and fund patients who really need help."
Cassie nodded, "The Nelson family is highly respected in Madison. Taking them down would be a huge deal. Even the President would oppose it. And if no one else steps in to run the Nelson Group, a lot of people would suffer from delays in medical treatment."
Laura stammered, "I was talking about Lucas, not the whole Nelson Group."
Bernice gave a bitter smile, "You might not know this, but the Nelson family's success is all thanks to Lucas. Since he took over, he restructured the Nelson Group. Despite his personal flaws, his contributions to the medical field, like training medical talent and donating to save lives, have earned him a lot of respect."
"Not just that," Cassie added, "he's also a big player in the entertainment industry. He's invested in film companies, bought shares in theaters, and has good relationships with major TV networks. Many famous directors have his backing. Plus, he has strong connections with international medical giants. A lot of people don't want to cut ties with someone who controls medical resources because everyone gets sick at some point."
Laura was stunned. She had no idea Lucas was so powerful.
"Let's drop this topic and grab some coffee," Bernice didn't want her friends to worry about her.
Half an hour later, Joseph called Cassie, "Noah's in Whisperlyn City. We're grabbing a late-night snack. Want to join us?"
Before he finished, Noah shouted, "Cassie, come over! I'm rarely in Whisperlyn City. Let's have a few drinks. I heard you and Laura are out shopping. Come join us."
Since it was Noah, Cassie found it hard to say no, "Who else is there?"
"Just a few friends you know," Noah said.
Cassie got the hint. Lucas was probably there too. After thinking for a moment, she said, "We'll shop a bit longer and come over later."
"No problem. We'll be here late anyway."
After hanging up, Laura, who was closest, said, "I think I heard Noah's voice."Cassie sighed, "Noah's in Whisperlyn City and invited us for a late-night snack."
Laura perked up, "Let's go then."
"I'm not going," Bernice said flatly, "Lucas will be there."
"Yeah, I figured. We'll shop a bit longer, and then Laura and I will head over."
At 9:30 PM, Bernice hopped into a nanny van and left. Cassie and Laura drove to the spot for the late-night snack.
Joseph had snagged a private room on the second floor with an open-air balcony, surrounded by plants. There were five or six guys on the balcony, some of them Joseph's friends and classmates from Whisperlyn City.
Lucas, dressed in black and white, sat alone, wearing glasses that made him look even more refined and handsome.
Among this group, he seemed the most gentle and elegant, but Cassie knew that none of these men were any better than Lucas.
"Hey, darling, come over here." Joseph pulled out a chair next to him and asked gently, "What did you buy tonight? Was the money enough?"
Noah clicked his tongue, "What a weird question. Would Cassie ever be short of money? Weren't you three shopping? Why are there only two of you?"
Laura laughed, "Bernice had something to do and couldn't make it. What, are the two of us not enough?"
Noah, clueless about the tension between Bernice and Lucas, laughed, "You two already have partners, and I'm still single. If you have any quality friends, you should introduce them to me."
Another friend chimed in, "Bernice is the one who acts in movies, right? She's pretty popular. My mom loves the TV shows she's in. I'd like to meet her."
"First come, first served," Noah joked.
"I'd say, if you're looking for actresses, you should ask Mr. Nelson for an introduction," another college friend laughed.
Lucas, who had been smoking on the side, squinted his eyes and said in a magnetic voice, "It's better not to look for actresses."
"That's right. Who knows, they might all be leftovers from Mr. Nelson," someone laughed.
After the laughter, the room fell silent.
That guy noticed everyone staring at him.
The smile on Cassie's face had vanished. "Louie Hopper, my friend, is in the entertainment industry. What do you mean by that?"
Louie's face turned beet red. "I wasn't talking about Bernice. Everyone knows Bernice is a pure and aloof woman."
Hearing this, Lucas suddenly chuckled.
The ambiguous laughter made everyone tense up.
Cassie and Laura were so mad they wanted to throw water in Lucas's face.
Seriously, if he hadn't threatened Bernice with others, would she even look at him?
Idiot.
Cassie smiled slightly, "Mr. Nelson, what's so funny? Is there something wrong with your nose?"
Everyone sensed the tension in the air.
Joseph pressed Cassie's hand and gave Lucas a warning look, "Don't mind him. Lucas is just like that. Let's enjoy our late-night snack."
Lucas flicked the ash from his cigarette and stayed silent.
After a few drinks, he went to the restroom with Noah. Noah lowered his voice, "Do you have something going on with Bernice?"
Others might not know Lucas well, but Noah did. Lucas and Cassie had almost clashed earlier.
Lucas, with a cigarette in his mouth, glanced at him indifferently, "Buddy, don't go after women in the entertainment industry. You're not like me."
Noah frowned, "That's not right. If Bernice can hang out with Cassie and the others, she must not be an easy person."
