Chapter 121
"Distracted by the view of his chest, Laura was startled when he brushed his hand across her chin and gave her a roguish, charming smile. ""Wow, haven't seen you here before. They got you ladies coming out to entertain us now, huh? Not bad-looking either.""
Laura's pretty face darkened with doubt, seriously wondering if she'd gotten the wrong room.
But hearing the sound of card playing from inside, she tentatively asked, ""Is Joseph Hernandez here? I need to speak with him.""
The young man blinked, then called back into the room, ""Joseph, you've got a visitor! What's going on, man? Racking up romantic debts in the port now, are we?""
""I'm a friend of his wife,"" Laura said sharply, pushing past him as he blocked the doorway.
Inside, three men of distinguished aura were seated. One, with a cigarette dangling from his lips, chided, ""Michael, you were supposed to just answer the door, not invite her in.""
""That's not on me,"" Michael replied nonchalantly, taking his seat and lighting up a cigarette, eyeing Laura curiously.
Joseph Hernandez, seated at the head of the table, was holding his cards nonchalantly. With just a glance at Laura, he tossed one on the table and said dismissively, ""Kick her out.""
""Wait!"" Laura, desperate, rushed forward. ""Cassie's been framed by her parents, and now she's been arrested. You're the only one who can save her. The cops are saying they'll wrap this case up in three days, and she'll be sentenced.""
""It’s none of my concern,"" Joseph Hernandez said coldly.
""But she's your wife.""
With a smirk, Joseph corrected her, ""You’re mistaken; she's David's girlfriend. Her fate is none of my business. Now get lost.""
At the mention of that heartless woman, he felt an overwhelming urge to strangle someone.
""Alright, Joseph told you to leave. Let's go.""
Michael, who had brought her in, pulled her towards the doorway.
Laura knew she had only one chance and clung to the door frame for dear life.
""No, Cassie never dated David. He just said that in front of the reporters to stir up drama. Cassie’s in love with you. You’re the only one she’s ever wanted, ever since the first day she met you. She’s been head over heels for you, man. She’s been staying at my place these days, but all she does is cry over you.""
Joseph Hernandez finally looked up, tossed his cards aside, and leaned back in his chair, ""Keep talking, let her go.""
Spotting a glimmer of hope, Laura Miller's eyes lit up as she quickly added, ""Cassie told me that ever since you rescued her from Anthony, she fell hard for you. She wanted nothing more than to be your girl. But, no matter what she did, it's like she was invisible to you. She was so exhausted and in so much pain that she had no choice but to leave.""
""She told me how much it hurt to not be loved by you. To feel your disdain was even more unbearable. The day your cat had kittens, she was all set to go out with me, but the minute she heard about it, she dropped everything to be with you. She said Dakota was your prized joy, and she couldn’t bear the thought of you being upset if anything happened to him.""
Joseph’s handsome brows furrowed involuntarily, ""Is that so? Because she didn't act like it when she got there that day.""
""Of course, she couldn’t show it,"" Laura Miller said with a pained expression. ""She didn’t want to just cook for you once, she wanted to cook for you for a lifetime. She didn't aspire to be your nanny; she wanted to be your wife. You just don't understand a woman’s heart.""
Her hands moved with dramatic emotion as if she was about to break into tears.
Joseph Hernandez was momentarily stunned, his heart pounding against his will.
That woman... could she really feel that way?
Laura went on more dramatically, ""Think about it, Joseph. Is David anywhere near as good-looking as you? Has David ever saved her? Why would she choose David over you? Is she blind?""
""She said even though you don't love her, and you can’t be together, not even the end of the world could stop her from loving you.""
