Chapter 1353 Unfortunately, I have no interest in you.
"When'd you get back?" Lucas pushed his glasses up his nose. "You're pretty slick. While other chicks are out hunting for sugar daddies, you snagged yourself a sugar mama and even got in with the President."
"Thanks," Bernice said, cool as a cucumber.
She acted like she didn't even catch the shade he was throwing.
Lucas chuckled and leaned in close, whispering in her ear. "Bernice, welcome back. I've been bored outta my mind. Could use some excitement."
Bernice shot him a bored look. "Too bad, not interested."
With that, she strutted off.
Under the streetlight, Lucas watched her go. She had on a loose trench coat, just showing the shape of her legs. Her white canvas shoes showed off her delicate ankles. The evening breeze played with her long hair, giving her a killer vibe.
A dark look flashed in Lucas's eyes. He smirked, and his phone buzzed.
It was Michael. "Where the hell are you? I'm losing it here. Cassie told me to go kneel before Laura."
"Just do it," Lucas said, not giving a damn.
"Fuck!"
"No matter how much of a jerk I am, I'd never give one woman's clothes to another," Lucas cut him off.
Michael wanted to say more, but Lucas hung up. Michael was fuming, thinking, 'That's 'cause Lucas has never been jealous. When he is, he's a nightmare. But wait, jealous? What am I jealous of?' Michael was losing it.
After the Jude family left, only Cassie and a nurse were in the hospital room. As the anesthesia wore off, Laura was in so much pain she couldn't sleep.
By dawn, Luke, Rose, and Elliott had arrived from Silverwood.
As soon as Laura saw her parents, she broke down and hugged Rose, crying. "Mom, I missed you so much. I thought I'd never see you again."
"You just had a baby; it wasn't gonna kill you. But wasn't it supposed to be next month? Why so sudden?" Rose's heart ached, thinking, 'They say giving birth is like walking on the edge of life and death, and I wasn't there for Laura.'
Laura stayed quiet but cried harder.
"What happened?" Luke's face darkened. "Did Michael mess with you?"
Laura sniffled and said hoarsely, "Mom, Dad, I want a divorce."
Even though Laura didn't say it outright, asking for a divorce was a clear sign Michael had messed with her.
Elliott's face turned cold, and he silently walked out.
Just then, Michael walked in.
"Perfect timing. What did you do to Laura?" Elliott demanded, punching Michael.
Michael stumbled back, hitting the doorframe. He was stunned. He rarely got hit, especially since Carl became President. Everywhere he went, people treated him with respect.
Michael was pissed, but when he saw the accusing eyes of the Miller family, his anger got stuck, unable to come out.
"Elliott, chill out." Michael raised his hand and shot a desperate look at Cassie, the only one not losing it.
Cassie sighed and stepped up. "Luke, Rose, let's hear him out."
"Fine, let him talk," Luke said coldly. "Michael, I know you've got a big name, but you know why you got married. Our Miller family might not be powerful, but Laura's been pushed to the edge by your Jude family. Do you think we care about being connected to the President? She's carried so much weight and will face more dangers. Take the Ralph rebellion, for instance. If Laura hadn't been dragged into the Dixon family mess, would she have to live in fear every day?"
"Exactly, we're not poor," Rose added. "When you got engaged, you looked down on my daughter and flirted with other women. You even made Laura get an abortion. Later, when the other woman dumped you, you came crawling back to Laura. I've always wanted to ask, what gives you the right? What's wrong with Laura that you treat her this way? Do you even deserve her?"
Michael felt the weight of their words. After a moment, he dropped to his knees. Everyone in the room was stunned, including Laura.
"I'm sorry. This is all on me. Our fight caused her early labor."
Michael pulled out a bank card and looked at Laura with puppy-dog eyes. "You should rip into me today. As a man, I didn't give you money and even gave away clothes you bought to someone else. I'm a jerk. From now on, you can keep my bank card and spend as you wish. Also, I bought the mall you visited today and put it in your name. You can shop there without spending a dime."
"The mall will send over the latest magazines with new season items. Whether it's shoes, clothes, or jewelry, you can have anything delivered to you."
Laura's pale lips parted in shock. She thought, 'Michael bought the entire mall for me? That mall is one of the biggest in Whisperlyn City and must've cost a fortune. And Michael, usually so proud, actually kneels before me publicly.'
Laura wondered if she was dreaming. Even Cassie was impressed by Michael's move. She had only asked Michael to make up for the clothes, but he went all out and bought the whole mall.
Elliott frowned. "Michael, I admit you offer a lot materially, but a woman needs emotional support. You couldn't even be considerate of your pregnant wife, causing her to go into early labor. What right do you have to be Laura's husband?"
"Elliott, I won't mess up again," Michael said pitifully, glancing at the baby in the cradle. "Besides, the baby needs me to help out, or Laura will be too worn out. I swear, I'll do all the dirty and tiring work. Laura just needs to rest comfortably. If you don't trust me, Rose can stay and keep an eye on me. The baby is so tiny. It'd be heartbreaking for her not to have a dad around."
His heartfelt apology and mention of the baby's need for a father left Luke and Rose speechless. No matter what, a divorce wouldn't be good for the baby.
