Chapter 180
"Collins, the boss, grumbled sarcastically, ""Mr. Hernandez, glad to see you could join us so early.""
Unfazed, Joseph took a seat on a leather chair, uttering a soft ""Hmm"" from his deep voice.
Noah was speechless. Couldn't Joseph see the irony and spare him some dignity in front of all the other prominent attorneys present?
""Proceed with the meeting,"" Joseph instructed, his tone graceful, his chin lifted ever so slightly as his phone vibrated.
He pulled it out—Cassie had sent a WhatsApp message: [Are you at the office yet?]
With a slight smile, he texted back: [Yes.]
Everyone in the office, witnessing his smile that seemed to be touched by the freshness of spring, nearly dropped their jaws.
They all wondered who the usually reserved and serious Mr. Hernandez was chatting with that could make him smile so delightfully.
Noah's curiosity peaked; he quickly wrapped up the meeting. ""Alright, alright, that's enough for the weekly meeting. Let's continue to push hard next week.""
The lawyers were baffled. The meeting had switched gears from discussing performance improvement to an abrupt end, leaving them thinking how irresponsible the boss was.
As the meeting adjourned and the other lawyers filtered out, Noah pondered who had brought such a rare smile to Mr. Hernandez's face.
Joseph stretched languidly as he got up, only to be quickly blocked by Collins. ""Who were you chatting with? You had quite the smirk going on there.""
Smirk?
Joseph frowned, perplexed. Him? Smirking to that extent seemed impossible.
""It wouldn't happen to be Cassie,"" Noah teased, wiggling his eyebrows suggestively. ""Seems like something went down that I'm not privy to.""
Joseph shot him a glance, unusually good-natured and couldn't be bothered to argue, ""Yeah, she confessed her feelings to me yesterday.""
""Doesn't she do that daily?"" Noah almost turned green with envy. That kind of flirty confession, he wished he had someone like that.
The corners of Joseph's mouth tilted up slightly, then immediately returned to his usual cool demeanor. ""Yeah, insistent on us being together, with the kind of persistence that won't take no for an answer. I'm out of options with her.""
Noah's eyes almost popped out of his head, man, Joseph, from the look on your face, you're already near bursting with pride, aren't you?
""That's rare, congrats! You should thank me, y'know. If I hadn't coaxed you into moving to Madison, you might have never met Cassie.""
""Thank you?"" Joseph replied icily, ""It's because of you that I'm being pestered by her, now I can't even shake her off.""
Noah was speechless.
Alright then.
Keep on pretending. I'll just stand back and watch, unmasking nothing.
""By the way, what do you usually do after work?"" Joseph suddenly asked. ""Cassie told me her life's like that of a retiree, work and then straight home.""
Noah internally sighed, oh man, even you recognize that's no life for her. Poor Cassie.
""Exactly, she's young and should be enjoying life, not just going home to cook. As for me? I hit the bars, play basketball, go fishing on my yacht, or grab late-night snacks after work. I live life to the fullest.""
