Chapter 472
"So, you intend to invite Joyce Ray into this arrangement as well? Two women attending to one man?" Cassie's words were laced with a note of derision. "It's not an uncommon sight among New York's high society, a wife and mistress cohabitating."
Joseph rose abruptly, his towering figure reminiscent of a model, though his eyes were marred by redness. "I've already sent Joyce Ray away. Rosalind informed me about the incident the other night when you confronted me - because I was holding her hand, lying on the bed. I regret misunderstanding you, and I apologize."
"The Funland Oasis affair is a thing of the past. I was unaware that they still held firework displays every Friday at 9:20. The park manager always took care of such matters. He claimed the fireworks were a significant attraction, but I’ve already had them discontinued."
"When I established the Summer Group, I didn't know you, but I'll ensure that Hernandez Electronics merges with Summer Corporation soon. The Summer Group will cease to exist in Madison."
Joseph moved closer to her, his gaze heavy with emotion. "Cassie, return to me. I can't survive without you."
He bent down and planted a gentle kiss on her lips.
Cassie was momentarily taken aback.
It was challenging to resist the charm of a man with his appearance, status, and a voice that could thaw a woman's heart.
But as his breath neared her, Cassie regained her composure, stepping back cautiously. "Ever heard of 'The Boy Who Cried Wolf'? You've whispered countless sweet words before, but the moment Joyce Ray felt the slightest discomfort, you instantly assumed I was the tormentor. Your brothers and friends viewed me as nothing more than a green-eyed monster. I'm done with that."
"Let's discuss Nathan Zenith. The man's beyond saving, yet you persistently aided him, which resulted in Brandon Wright threatening me with a knife, causing David to lose a kidney. Then I'm left to bear the guilt. Why should I?"
Joseph's eyes narrowed. "Are you siding with David here?"
"Shouldn't I?" Cassie laughed bitterly. "Without David, I'd be dead—murdered for the sake of your ex-girlfriend's brother."
With a cold finality, she concluded her speech and ascended the stairs.
Seething, she locked her door and took a shower.
Emerging from the shower, she was shocked to find Joseph, who should've been outside, sprawled on her bed, clutching her pillow and wrapped in her sheets, sleeping peacefully.
She was at a loss. How did he manage to get in?
"Joseph, get out!" Cassie pulled the covers off him.
The sight of him, undressed except for his underwear, caused her cheeks to flush, a mix of anger and embarrassment.
"Why are you not wearing anything?"
Seeing her blush, Joseph's lips curled into a teasing smile. "I undressed for bed since you didn't provide any pajamas."
Really? He intrudes into her space and has the audacity to blame her for not providing pajamas?
She hadn't realized just how brazen he could be.
"Be quiet now, your scent helps me sleep. I haven't slept in two days." Joseph pulled the covers back over himself.
Cassie felt a whirlwind of anger and helplessness. "What do you want, Joseph? Don't you have Joyce Ray already? Why keep bothering me?"
"I let her go," he muttered, his lips pressing together tightly. Suddenly, he suggested, "If you resent that I locked you in the cellar overnight, you can lock me in the wardrobe."
The words slipped out before she could stop them. "Why would I do that? I'm not sick like you."
'Sick...' the word reverberated in the bedroom.
Joseph's face turned deathly pale, like a terrified child.
Cassie bit her lip, resolved not to feel even the slightest twinge of sympathy for him.
Without a word, Joseph rose to his feet, his bare feet padding against the floor as he walked into the closet, closing the door behind him.
Cassie couldn't be bothered with his theatrics.
