Chapter 1329 The Trap

"You think I didn't wanna? But Cassie wasn't having it, and we argued for hours." Joseph shot her a look. "Besides, is a daughter really as big a deal as a son?"

"Yeah, you're right." Marigold got it quick. The richer the family, the more they wanted sons.

Joseph brought his son over, showing he was all in with the Dixon family.

She crouched down to Oliver's level. "Hey there, what's your name?"

"Oliver," he said, not showing any emotion.

"Good boy!" Marigold grinned. "How about I become your mom? Don't worry, I'll treat you right."

Oliver was momentarily thrown by her shamelessness.

"He might be too happy," Joseph said, messing up Oliver's hair with a smile.

Oliver stayed quiet, thinking, 'This guy's pretty shameless too.'

"I'll take you inside," Marigold said, linking arms with Joseph as they walked. "Lots of guests tonight. Mr. Jude's family is here, and so is David. You cool with that?"

She gave Joseph a look and sighed, "David's got my dad's trust. Better steer clear of him later."

"Got it," Joseph nodded, smirking a bit. "I don't remember much from back then."

"Look at you now, all clear-headed. You were so stubborn before," Marigold said with a smile. "I chased you back then, but you didn't care. If you'd been with me, there wouldn't be any David."

Joseph just smiled, not saying a word.

Walking into the mansion's banquet hall, the luxury hit him hard.

It was a buffet, but every dish was top-tier. Any plate here could buy a house, and even the desserts were pricier than diamonds.

A nearby guest was holding a plate of chocolate cake, gushing, "This cake is amazing. Never had anything like it."

The server chimed in, "These desserts are made by top pastry chefs from Yugrot, using the finest chocolate and caviar. This one here has the best cream, all fresh ingredients flown in this morning."

"Got it."

The guests were loving it, getting a new sense of how high up the Dixon family was.

Feeling a bit smug, Marigold said to Joseph, "My dad got the world-famous chef Sebastian Martinez. Most of tonight's dishes are his. Bet you haven't tried his stuff before. Let me take you to taste it."

"Later," Joseph said, holding her hand. "We should congratulate your dad first. Wouldn't be polite otherwise."

"Later. My dad's upstairs meeting guests right now. Not a good time to bug him."

Marigold glanced at the second floor, a complicated look in her eyes.

"Alright," Joseph said, pretending not to notice, then bent down to Oliver. "Let's get you something to eat."

Oliver wasn't really into the food but nodded anyway.

After munching down, he couldn't help but think Sophia would have loved this. He made a mental note to snag some for her later.

Once he was stuffed, Marigold turned to Joseph. "There's a small playground out back. Lots of kids are playing there tonight. I'll have a server take Oliver. He'll have more fun."

"He can stay with me," Joseph said, eyeing Marigold.

"We're gonna see my dad later. It's a hassle to bring a kid. Let him go play. My nephews are there too. Don't worry."

Marigold smiled and called a server. "Take Oliver to the playground in the back."

Joseph's face got serious, but Oliver suddenly stood up. "I'll go play then. It's pretty boring here anyway."

"Be careful!" Joseph said, gripping the chair's armrest tightly, staring at his son.

"Got it. So naggy," Oliver said, strutting away.

"Your kid's got guts," Marigold snickered.

"He's too disrespectful," Joseph sighed, rubbing his forehead.

After a bit, Marigold got a call and said to Joseph, "My dad's done. Let's go see him."

Joseph followed her upstairs.

In the second-floor reception room, besides Ralph and his wife, there was a guy in a black suit with glasses sitting on the sofa. It was David.

"Dad, why is he here?" Marigold's face changed slightly when she saw David.

"David's your future fiancé. It's normal for him to be here," Ralph said, lighting a cigarette and glancing at David. "Right?"

David smiled, "It's my honor to marry your daughter, Ralph."

"David, you're too modest," Ophelia laughed. "With your current status, marrying my daughter is a perfect match."

"Dad, Mom, what are you saying? He's married to Cassie and hasn't divorced," Marigold said, stomping her foot anxiously. She didn't like David at all. Sure, the Dixon family had gotten far thanks to David's help, but she didn't want him as a husband. He was too slimy.

And looks-wise, David couldn't hold a candle to Joseph.

Ralph said calmly, "He will divorce. Cassie isn't good enough for David anymore."

"Exactly," David nodded with a smile. "But Ralph, Cassie betrayed me. I'm not letting her off easy."

"Haha, I get it," Ralph laughed indifferently. "Letting her off would be too soft. Joseph brought his kid, right? Use the kid as leverage. You can keep Cassie as your side piece after the divorce, but my daughter has to be your wife. Do whatever you want with Cassie, but no illegitimate kids."
