Chapter 243
"Cassie couldn't remember the last time she had seen Joseph this furious. She ended the call abruptly, her voice trembling with desperation. ""You've seen the photos, haven't you? Please, you must understand...""
Joseph cut her off sharply, ""Understand what, exactly?""
In a fit of rage, Joseph threw his smartphone at her, his dark eyes brimming with a potent mix of heartbreak, loathing, and disgust.
""Look at these vile images! You've always maintained that you don't care for David, yet here you are, hanging onto him, undressing him! How shameless can you be, Cassie!""
The phone struck her chest painfully, yet the physical hurt was nothing compared to the ache in her heart.
How could any man stay composed after discovering such photos? It felt as though a glaring neon sign of betrayal had been hung above his head.
""No, it was a setup! Olivia force-fed me drinks that night, and David stepped in to help. I swear, nothing happened between us,"" Cassie sobbed, shaking her head emphatically. ""I spent the entire night taking cold showers to sober up.""
""Do you take me for a fool?"" Joseph retorted with a bitter laugh. ""Any man would have crumbled under those circumstances. I ended up in the hospital on an IV drip to recover, and you're telling me a cold shower was all it took for you?""
""I'm telling the truth,"" Cassie pleaded through her tears. ""I swear it...""
""Enough, Cassie! I can't make sense of you!"" Joseph suddenly gripped her chin tightly, his voice seething with anger. ""You act all innocent and pure around me, pretending to be frightened... Is it that amusing to toy with me?""
He continued relentlessly, ""Tell me, when were these photos taken? I recall being on a business trip recently, and the staff mentioned that you didn't come home one night...""
""I didn't! Nothing happened between David and me. I don't love David..."" Cassie insisted, shaking her head in desperation.
Joseph ignored her denial, his eyes glinting with a cold, scornful light. ""It seems my suspicions were correct. The night I called you, your voice was different. You claimed you were out shopping - but you were with David, weren't you?""
With each word, his anger grew, the pain akin to an open wound being rubbed with salt, almost suffocating him.
Cassie felt herself drowning under the weight of his suspicion and accusation. The trust between them was so fragile, she didn't know how to convince him of her innocence.
""If... you don't trust me, you can verify it yourself,"" Cassie suggested, her fists clenched in helplessness.
Joseph laughed scornfully as if he'd heard a joke. ""After seeing those photos, even looking at you feels dirty.""
Fearing he might lose control, he turned abruptly and left the room.
Cassie was left reeling. Just the previous night, she had felt like the happiest woman in the world. But now, as dawn broke, it felt like her world was shattering around her.
Where had those photos come from? She recalled David mentioning that he had destroyed the camera when they left.
Frantically, she dialed David's number.
""David, have you seen the photos? I'm really worried about you. Has Joseph misunderstood something? I can call him to clarify,"" David's anxious voice came through as soon as the call connected."
