Chapter 1126 Destined Lover

Bernice's eyes were cold. After waiting quietly and seeing he wasn't going to speak, she started eating.

Her indifference made Lucas's eyes harden. "Why'd you stop talking?"

"I don't know what to say. If I say I didn't want your attention, you'll call me fake. If I say I did, you'll call me cheap." Bernice took a bite of fish, chewed, swallowed, and said, "So it's best to stay quiet and avoid you threatening to blacklist me again."

Lucas watched her calmly, his eyes dark with emotion.

Laura wanted to defend Bernice but laughed after hearing her. "Makes sense. Men can be so boring sometimes. Let's just eat."

Midway through, Lucas went to the restroom.

While washing his hands, Joseph approached. "You were really rude tonight. Bernice was invited by Cassie. I don't care about your issues with her, but did you have to target her so openly at dinner?"

"Was I?" Lucas's expression stayed the same.

"You weren't?" Joseph gave him a look. "You look like you wanted to sleep with her but got rejected, so now you belittle her to feel better."

"You're crazy," Lucas snapped.

"You never used to be like this," Joseph said, drying his hands.

Lucas frowned and lit a cigarette. "By the way, how did Bernice end up here? When did Laura and Cassie meet her?"

"Not sure. I came out of court and saw her with Cassie and the others. Michael said they just met today."

"Bernice went to your court case?" Lucas raised an eyebrow.

"Yeah." Joseph walked into the men's room.

When they got back to the private room, Bernice's seat was empty.

"Bernice had to leave for something urgent," Laura said, looking at Lucas. "Mr. Nelson, I know Bernice is just an actress, and you might look down on her, but could you not be so harsh?"

Maybe because Laura also came from Silverwood, she hated the superiority the nobles of Whisperlyn City had.

She might have tolerated it before, but now that she was Carl's goddaughter, she didn't want to put up with it anymore.

She continued, "Don't act like every woman is after your money and status. Yes, some are, but..."

"How long have you known Bernice?" Lucas interrupted calmly, "Four hours, five hours? Do you really know what kind of person she is?"

"True, we've known each other a short time, but I want to be friends with Bernice. Just like how Cassie and I liked being friends with Nina back then, even though you men didn't like her." Laura sneered. "What kind do you like? Someone like Megan or Sarah?"

Lucas's eyes narrowed. Sensing his anger, Michael quickly intervened, "Laura, enough. Maybe Lucas knows Bernice better since she's in his company. And now that your status has changed, people might try to cozy up to you. Be cautious."

Laura found his words annoying. "Thanks, but I know how to pick my friends. Except for Sarah, I've never made a wrong choice."

Cassie coughed, holding a glass of water.

If Lucas hadn't helped her recently, she would've given Laura a thumbs up.

Laura was really good at making a point.

"Ungrateful," Lucas said coldly.

Sarah was Lucas's fiancée, and Laura's jabs were making him lose face.

"I am ungrateful. Now I get how suffocated Cassie felt hanging out with you guys three years ago." Laura stood up and smiled at Cassie. "Cassie, I'm full. I'm leaving."

"I'll see you out," Cassie immediately stood up.

"Don't bother. Stay with Mr. Hernandez. I just need a walk." Laura waved and left.

Within half a minute, Michael stood up. "I'll go see her off."

The room fell into awkward silence.

Lucas poured himself a glass of wine. "Didn't expect to be the most unwelcome person tonight. I'll leave too and not disturb you any longer."

As they left, Cassie shrugged. "Let's not do these gatherings again. Our friends clearly don't get along."

"It's my fault." Joseph quickly hugged Cassie. "Cassie, I'm sorry. I don't know what's up with Lucas today. Maybe he's worried Bernice has ulterior motives."

"If she did, she'd be cozying up to rich and powerful men, not us. She's in the entertainment industry. What can we offer her? Free skincare products from Laura?" Cassie shrugged.

"True." Joseph laughed, taken aback by her words.

"And for some reason, I feel a close connection with Bernice," Cassie said. "Even though we just met, it feels like we've known each other forever."

"Cassie, if you say that, I'll get jealous." Joseph frowned. "Did you feel that way when you first met me, like I was your destined lover?"

Cassie almost spat out her drink, then laughed.

"What's so funny? I'm serious." Joseph gritted his teeth, feeling embarrassed.

Cassie smirked. "Did you feel that way when you first saw me?"

"My memory was altered by Megan, but if I remembered, I would definitely have felt that way," Joseph said shamelessly.

"Come on, the first time you saw me, you thought I was crazy. But the first time I saw you, I thought of you as prey."

Cassie leaned close to his ear, a bit tipsy, and lightly bit his earlobe.
