Chapter 1522 Is She Crazy?
Laura mumbled, "I don't know either, but are you sure you wanna be with a guy? Didn't you say you had a dream where you kissed a girl and it felt pretty good? Maybe you don't hate the idea of being with a woman. Why not give it a shot? If you're into guys, I'd back you up, but you gotta think about your parents too."
Right after she said it, she regretted it big time.
'Oh crap, why did I bring up that kiss again? Am I scared he'll forget?' she thought.
While she was beating herself up, Derek had this faint smile in his eyes. "That was just a dream. Who knows if it would feel the same in real life."
"Maybe you should find someone to try it with," Laura blurted out.
"Who?" Derek asked, dead serious.
Laura was caught off guard. "How would I know? Maybe a girl who likes you."
Then she pictured Derek kissing another girl and felt a pang of discomfort.
"But if I try with someone who likes me, won't she think I like her back? What if she wants to date me then?" Derek looked troubled. "I don't want any drama right now."
Laura nodded. Made sense.
"Or maybe I could try kissing you?" Derek suggested, testing the waters.
Laura was floored. She quickly looked up, meeting his gaze, her face turning red. "Are you nuts?"
"How am I nuts?" Derek laughed, "I just want to see if I'd feel grossed out enough to puke."
"And what about my dignity if you puke?" Laura shot back, glaring at him.
"You're the closest person to me who's not family," Derek shrugged, "I think you're really attractive, and I don't feel grossed out when we're together. Actually, I like your scent. So if kissing you makes me feel sick, there's no point trying with other women. Plus, I'm a bit of a germaphobe."
Derek paused, then asked, "Or do you think I like guys and find me disgusting?"
He laughed bitterly. "Forget it, I know I'm gross. I've seen all those nasty comments online."
His face looked so sad, it made Laura's heart ache.
"I don't think you're disgusting," she said quickly, "To me, you're a really good person."
"Then can I kiss you?" Derek looked at her with those dark, bright eyes.
Laura felt like she was losing it. "It's not that I don't want to help, but I have the flu. I'll get you sick."
"Can we try after your flu is gone?" Derek asked, not giving up.
Laura sighed in frustration, "I'm not the type to kiss a man the first time I see him on the street. What if I fall for you when you kiss me? Once I like someone, I get really clingy. You better watch out."
"If you fall for me and I don't mind kissing you, I might consider marrying you. But if I really don't feel anything, don't push it," Derek shrugged helplessly.
"I won't push it. Don't worry, I won't fall for you." Laura felt super undignified and glared at him, "I don't want you to marry me out of pity. I don't have a thing for marrying my ex-husband's cousin."
"Alright, I'm just messing with you. I really gotta head to work now." Derek laughed as he opened the door. Before stepping out, he turned back and said, "I'll wait for your flu to get better."
With that, he closed the door behind him.
Laura frantically ran her hands through her hair.
Did she just agree to his crazy idea? How did that even happen? Was she losing her mind?
But seriously, why was she so freaked out?
It was just a kiss. She was a divorced woman, for crying out loud. Why was she making such a big deal out of it?
Even though she tried to convince herself, Laura couldn't calm down.
To distract herself, she turned on the TV in the living room. Just as she was about to dive into a new show, her phone rang. It was Michael.
She didn't want to answer, but thinking of Maeve, she finally picked up. "You have thirty seconds. If you're calling to yell at me about Megan again, I'm hanging up."
"I want to see Maeve," Michael's voice was cold. "I haven't seen her in over a month. I'm her father, and I have the right to see her."
"You can see Maeve at the Presidential Palace today. I'll ask the Godmother to let you in," Laura said, her throat itching. She coughed a couple of times and continued, "But you can't take her out."
"Laura, she's my daughter. Don't I have the right to take my own daughter out to play?" Michael shouted.
"Play?" Laura sneered, "Maeve is so young, she can't even roll over by herself. The weather is freezing, what can she play? Michael, if it weren't for your parents, I wouldn't even let Maeve recognize you as her father. You have no rights, you know that?"
After she hung up, she felt furious for Maeve.
Michael hadn't cared about his daughter for over a month, and now he had the nerve to say he wanted to see her.
Luckily, Maeve was still so young that she couldn't understand these matters.
But Laura knew that with her connection to the Presidential Palace, Maeve would eventually find out that Michael was her biological father.
And if Laura insisted on blocking him, Michael could take her to court, and the judge would likely allow them to see each other twice a month.
Laura didn't want to make things worse and more complicated.
At ten in the morning, the nanny called Laura and told her that Michael had arrived at the Presidential Palace to see Maeve. He was also posting on Facebook, saying that he was staying for lunch and spending time with Maeve until Derek came to pick Laura up in the evening. It seemed Michael hadn't left yet.
Thinking about having to see Michael when she got back made Laura feel annoyed.
"Feeling down? Have a hot drink," Derek handed her a cup of lemon tea.
"Michael isn't planning to stay for dinner at the Presidential Palace, right?" Laura said irritably.
"If Michael doesn't leave, my parents won't kick him out," Derek shrugged, "Don't worry, as long as I'm here, I won't let Michael bully you."
Hearing Derek's words, Laura felt inexplicably reassured. After taking a sip of the hot drink, her throat felt much better. "Did you buy this especially for me?"
