Chapter 231

"Cassie paused, her intention had been to inquire about his identity. However, since he had asked Richard to keep it a secret, it was clear he didn't want to share. She let the subject drop with a simple, ""Oh, no reason.""

Joseph's gaze softened. Glancing at the time, Cassie spoke up, ""I've got an auction event this evening, so I won't be home for dinner. Would you like to... come with me?"" She asked tentatively, doubting he'd agree. His often dismissive attitude seemed to make him aloof for such affairs.

""Sure.""

""Huh?"" Cassie was taken aback, thinking she'd misunderstood.

""Surprised I said yes?"" Joseph smirked at her bewildered expression.

""Not really, it's just... you never liked attending Madison's parties before.""

""I'll come with you to avoid you drawing too much attention,"" he said, his eyes focused on the road.

Cassie found herself captivated by his chiseled profile. She couldn't resist leaning over to peck his cheek. His grip on the steering wheel faltered. With a resigned tone, he said, ""Don’t flirt with me while I'm driving.""

The words felt familiar, and Cassie laughed. ""I know, could cause a crash, right?""

""No,"" he glanced at her. ""It's distracting.""

Her breath hitched. The heat between them seemed to fill the car, quickening her pulse irresistibly. For a moment, she wanted to throw caution to the wind and kiss him fiercely, but her sense of road safety prevailed.

At 7:30 PM, the convention center was abuzz. A high-profile auction was about to commence. The elite from Madison arrived one after another. As the new Chairwoman of Peace Group, Cassie was the center of attention. She was immediately surrounded as she walked in.

Arthur Lewis watched from a distance, his heart souring. He hadn't imagined that his ex, who he'd left behind only days ago, would become the head of Peace Group so quickly. Everyone seemed to think he'd made a fool of himself. Indeed, he had mistaken fool's gold for the real thing, missing out on the best. And now she had a better man by her side, and she was out of his league.

His fiancée, Luna, pinched his arm and whispered, ""I heard she's your ex?""

""It's all in the past."" Arthur forced a smile, knowing he now had to cozy up to the Reynolds family.

""As long as you remember that. Stay loyal to me, and the Reynolds family will have your back,"" Luna murmured.

---

Elsewhere, Cassie caught sight of Arthur Lewis. He was impossible to miss in his crisp white suit. A stranger stood next to him. She thought to herself how the boy she once held dear had become a man willing to trade his charm for power and wealth.

""Are you scoping out Arthur Lewis?"" The man's voice came with a warning edge from beside her.

""Just lost in thought,"" she replied.

""What about?"" Joseph asked, sounding irked.

""A good show. You'll see in a bit."" Cassie lifted her chin, playful mischief sparkling in her bright eyes.

Joseph's knitted brow slowly eased. As long as it wasn't her still hung up on Arthur Lewis, everything was fine."
