Chapter 394
For a fleeting moment, Joseph's expression hardened, before he quickly recovered, his smile appearing natural as he said, "It was decided after a discussion with the company."
"I see..." murmured Cassie, her voice barely above a whisper.
Had he been honest with her, she might not have taken it amiss. Perhaps he was unaware that she already knew of Megan Ray's existence. It seemed to always unfold this way; just as she resolved to fully open her heart to him, he would disappoint her.
"Let's not talk about that. What's this about?" Joseph queried, brandishing an invitation.
Cassie remembered leaving it on the desk upon her return, and he had evidently seen it. "It's an invite from Luna."
"She invited me as well," Joseph chuckled, "Seems she thinks marrying Felix is something to brag about."
Cassie was left speechless. Even her ex had been invited; tomorrow was shaping up to be quite the event.
"Forget you saw it, there's no need to go," Joseph casually tossed the invitation aside.
"And what about you?" Cassie pressed.
"I have some business with the Stark family," Joseph replied, a dark glint passing through his eyes.
Cassie's gaze subtly shifted. "Do you think the recent series of setbacks we've had are connected to the Stark family?"
"Hmm, especially with that yacht video—it's not something Liam could have done alone. I bet the Stark family are his cronies." Joseph toyed with her fingers, adorned with their wedding bands, a gesture that brought him immense satisfaction. "You head to work; leave everything to me."
"No, I've already promised Luna I'd go," Cassie said, her gaze unwavering.
"Come on, don't be like that..." Joseph frowned.
Cassie slid off his lap. "You think because of my scars I'll just be laughed at in those kinds of places, right? Or maybe you're worried if we show up together, Joseph with his unsightly wife, it'll be a laugh for everyone."
"Cassie..." Joseph's voice was heavy, "Is that what you think of me? I don't want you going because I want to protect you. You know what Luna's intentions are."
"But this is my face for life. Am I supposed to hide and never go out in public?" Cassie asked, touching her cheek. "With your prestigious status, you'll have to attend all sorts of events. When people ask about your wife, will you keep me hidden forever? And me, stuck at home, watching you with all those beautiful women on your arm. If that's the life I have to live, you might as well let me go now."
With that, she turned and left decisively, leaving Joseph nursing a headache from their exchange.
...
Retreating to her room, Cassie went straight to bed. Skincare, once a nightly ritual, now seemed pointless.
After some time, Joseph came up and wrapped his arms around her from behind, his voice a mixture of resignation and appeasement, "Don't be mad. I'll go with you tomorrow, and it's about time I introduced you to those New York elites as my wife."
Cassie turned to face him. In the darkness, his eyes revealed tender affection.
"But I'm... I'm not pretty, they'll laugh at you."
With an exasperated pinch of her nose, Joseph retorted, "Who was it just now accusing me of not wanting to be seen with you? And now you're selling yourself short?"
Cassie bit her lip in irritation, aware of her own contradictions. She could dismiss what others thought, but his opinion... it still affected her mood.
"Sweetheart, how many times do I have to tell you? It's not your face I fell in love with; it's you," Joseph said softly. "If I told you not to go, it's because I worried about you feeling upset. What others think doesn't matter to me. It's always been your thoughts I care about."
