Chapter 1108 He Increasingly Looked Down On Sarah
Sarah felt overwhelmed. She'd embarrassed herself trying to please Lucas, but he still despised her.
She cursed to herself, "It's all Cassie's fault. Lucas didn't like me before, but he wasn't this cold."
Ever since Cassie exposed that Sarah had stolen her sheet music years ago, Lucas had been even harsher.
But right now, Sarah needed to make a comeback in the film industry.
As for Lucas, she was going to marry him soon. She could leverage the Nelson family then.
With that in mind, Sarah said sadly, "Fine, I'll leave. But Lucas, can you do me a favor?"
Lucas's mocking gaze intensified, making her feel worse. Still, she forced herself to say, "I've read the script for Ms. Gray's 'The Whispering Shadows.' I really like it. I want to play the lead role."
"You don't like it; you just see Ms. Gray's talent. You want to use this film to make a comeback and maybe win an award," Lucas exposed her intentions.
Sarah's face burned with shame. "I should have my own career. I don't want to always rely on you. Besides, I'm about to marry you. If I can establish myself in the entertainment industry, it will also bring some prestige to the Nelson family."
Lucas smirked, and Sarah quickly added, "I've really learned my lesson from the sheet music incident. I'm very ashamed. I was just too eager to make money and become famous. You know my family was in a bad situation back then."
"Enough," Lucas cut her off, "I know exactly what you're thinking. There's no need to pretend in front of me. Get out. I'll call Dreamscape Entertainment Group later and have them contact Ms. Gray."
"Thank you." Sarah was overjoyed. "I'll leave now. You go take a shower."
She put on her clothes and left.
The more Lucas looked at her, the more she annoyed him. He strode into the bathroom and slammed the door.
He thought, "If I marry such a woman, it sucks!"
When he first met Sarah, he didn't dislike her that much. Later, he thought it was nothing that Sarah was fake. However, after Cassie exposed Sarah's true nature, he couldn't stand her anymore. Sarah was too fake and greedy.
Sarah wanted to marry him; she desired his love, his body, and his power.
That's why Lucas despised the idea of love.
A woman like Sarah talking about love was an insult to the concept of love.
When he finished his shower, he found Sarah had already left.
The next day, he woke up feeling well-rested, and Eli Hall came over to report on some company matters.
Over the years, he had invested in many companies, including private hospitals and film companies.
After the report, Eli suddenly said, "Mr. Nelson, you asked me to investigate the whereabouts of William and Esmeralda's ashes. I finally found a suspect."
Lucas took a sip of coffee, remembering the matter. "You took long enough."
"There were no surveillance cameras at the cemetery, so I had to check the nearby traffic," Eli explained.
"Who did it?" Lucas asked calmly.
"Bernice," Eli said.
Lucas raised an eyebrow. "Who is she?"
Eli pulled up a photo of Bernice and handed it to him.
Lucas glanced at the photo. Bernice had a stunning face with a charming smile, but her eyes were cold, like a vortex.
He remembered Nina had the same kind of eyes—cold and indifferent.
"Mr. Nelson," Eli called out.
"Does she have any connection to the Zenith family?" Lucas asked.
"She does," Eli said. "Before Isabella married William Zenith, she lived in Broad City with Nina. Nina's only childhood friend was Bernice. But later, Nina was taken back to the Zenith family by William. They kept in touch through letters at first, but then Bernice's parents, Danielle and Hunter Ramsey, divorced. Bernice was taken away by Danielle, and she lost contact with Nina."
Lucas lit a cigarette, thinking, "Did Bernice dig up Esmeralda and William's ashes because of that childhood friendship?"
Lucas asked, "Did Bernice visit Nina when she was in prison?"
"No." Eli shook his head.
Lucas rubbed his temples.
"By the way," Eli said, "Bernice has been competing with Sarah for the lead role in 'The Whispering Shadows.' Both the original work's readers and Ms. Gray think Bernice is more suitable. But you asked the company to secure the role for Sarah."
Lucas raised an eyebrow and smirked. "If Ms. Gray sees something in her, her acting must be decent."
"It's very good," Eli said excitedly.
Realizing his excitement, Eli awkwardly added, "She used to be a terrible actress, but her acting suddenly improved two years ago."
"Two years ago?" Lucas's eyebrows twitched.
He remembered that Nina had jumped into the sea two years ago.
"Get me Bernice's schedule. I want to meet her," Lucas said after a pause.
"I can bring her over," Eli suggested.
"No need," Lucas said, looking at the photo on his phone.
"Then I think Bernice will go directly to Mr. Jenkins," Eli said. "She is also an artist with Dreamscape Entertainment Group."
Lucas was slightly surprised. "How come I've never seen her at the annual parties?"
"She didn't attend. Last year she was sick, and the year before she was filming," Eli explained.
"Interesting." Lucas smirked.
He had a feeling Bernice might know something.
At eleven in the morning, Lucas appeared at Dreamscape Entertainment Group.
The company's CEO, Max, was surprised to see him. "I've already contacted Ms. Gray. She agreed to let Sarah play the lead role. You didn't have to come in person. Are you worried I'd mistreat the future Mrs. Nelson?"
Lucas smirked. "It's tough for you. She's such a terrible actress, and you still have to support her as the lead."
"You're too blunt." Max coughed. "Ms. Gray said that since we insisted on Sarah, we'll have to spend more time coaching her. Hopefully, she'll perform better."
"If she doesn't, have Ms. Gray replace her," Lucas said indifferently.
Max gave him a surprised look and was about to speak when the secretary, Beverly Myers, suddenly came in. "Mr. Jenkins, Bernice is here."
Max looked troubled. He glanced at Lucas and said to Beverly, "Tell her I'm not here and to come back in the afternoon."
"Let her in," Lucas said unexpectedly.
