Cassie looked at Joseph's cautious demeanor with indifference. It was inexplicably laughable. Her lips curled into a merciless sneer.
"I would never come to see you." Cassie forcefully withdrew her hand. "We have no ties anymore."
As she turned to leave, Joseph quickly blocked her path. Even in his illness, his tone remained as oppressive as ever. "I never broke up with you, Cassie. You are still my girlfriend."

"I won't turn against you, I promise." Joseph, at a loss, grabbed her sleeve. "Didn't you say you wanted to get back at me and Megan? Didn't you say you wanted to take me away and make Megan suffer? I'm giving you that chance."
Even if it meant being tormented by Cassie in the future, he couldn't bear to be apart from her. At this moment, Joseph, like a helpless child, just wanted Cassie to give him one more chance.
"Thank you, but I don't want that chance anymore," Cassie answered.
She looked at the desperate Joseph. If it had been before, she would have felt triumphant. She thought, 'Joseph, you once belittled me so much, never imagining you'd be this scared and pitiful one day.'
But she had to admit that she had also been hurt in the process of making Joseph fall in love with her again.
"Why? Don't you want to get back at me anymore?" he then asked.
Joseph found it laughable that he, once so high and mighty, had fallen to this point. But what scared him more was that if she no longer wanted revenge, it meant there would be no more connection between them.
Cassie lowered her long lashes. "Joseph, I'm human too. During our interactions, I found out you hadn't been with Megan for years, and when you carried me up the mountain, I moved. Was I really getting back at you, or was I just making it happier for you?"
"No, you did get back at me. Like now, my heart hurts," Joseph said, looking at her in pain. "Stay with me, and you can torment me as much as you want, as long as you're happy."
"No." Cassie shook her head. "When I begged you at Dragon, and you said you'd lock me up, and then when I saw Spencer's severed finger, I stopped loving you. I'll continue to get back at Megan, but not because of you—it's for Nina. As for our past love and hatred, let's leave it at that. I don't want to use my feelings as a weapon for revenge anymore."
