Chapter 573
"No need," Cassie declared, shaking her head. She pondered the potential outcomes of her actions. If she were to intervene, Joseph would undoubtedly head straight to the police station, or perhaps seek out Megan. As it turned out, Cassie's prediction was spot on.
A mere twenty minutes later, Joseph materialized at the police station, where Megan had been anxiously awaiting his arrival. Her eyes were red and swollen from crying.
"Joseph," she breathed, the moment she spotted him. Without hesitation, she flung herself into his arms, her voice choked with emotion. "I'm sorry. My brother has caused you trouble once again. I never anticipated he would be so irresponsible."
"Nathan's recklessness only escalates because he knows I'm always there to back him up, doesn't he?" Joseph's handsome face contorted with anger. "Nathan had the audacity to invade someone's home, to assault and torment them. He behaves as though he's the king of New York. What's next? Will he brandish a gun and rob a bank?"
Megan hastened to explain, "He was infatuated with Laura, but even when she rejected him, she insulted him repeatedly. Nathan has always had a fiery temper."
"So, what are you implying? That Nathan is innocent?" Joseph retorted, his tone seething with anger.
"No," Megan stammered, taken aback by Joseph's fury. She knew he was genuinely livid when her tears began to flow more freely. She whimpered, "That's not what I meant. Nathan was in the wrong, and I am deeply disappointed. I blame myself for his actions."
"It's not your fault. Nathan dug his own grave," Joseph consoled her, gently patting her back.
"Joseph, I spoke with the police. They've filed a case. If the victim presses charges, Nathan could face a decade in prison," Megan confessed through her tears.
"I'm your brother, Megan. Our parents are no longer with us. If Nathan is incarcerated, I'll lose the only family I have left," Megan pleaded.
"But you still have me," Joseph reassured her softly, although he was reluctant to bail Nathan out this time.
"That's different. Nathan is the only person who shares my blood," Megan sobbed, burying her face in Joseph's chest.
Joseph tenderly stroked Megan's back, his eyes glinting with an inscrutable light.
After a while, Megan realized that Joseph was still indecisive. She forced a bitter smile onto her face. "Forget it, I don't want to burden you with this. I'll figure something out."
"What could you possibly do?" Joseph asked, his voice laced with helplessness.
"I'll beg Laura for her forgiveness. If she pardons my brother, I'm willing to comply with any conditions. I'll even kneel before her," Megan declared, pulling away from his embrace. "I'm heading to the hospital now."
Joseph seized her arm, irritation creeping into his voice. "Laura is still unconscious. Your presence won't change anything."
"But if I stay by her side until she regains consciousness, it will demonstrate my sincerity. I'll cover all her medical expenses," Megan argued, stubbornly shrugging off Joseph's grip. "Joseph, I have to go. This is all my brother's fault."
Before Joseph could respond, Megan dashed out of the police station.
Joseph had no choice but to follow her, albeit reluctantly.
After ensuring David was settled, Cassie returned to Laura's hospital room.
Laura was in the throes of a nightmare.
She was shaking her head frantically, as though trying to evade something, mumbling, "Don't, don't hit me, it hurts."
"Laura, it's alright, I'm here," Cassie rushed to her side, clutching Laura's hand as tears streamed down her face.
Laura had been pampered like a princess in the Miller's family from childhood to adulthood. She had never endured any physical abuse.
Now, her terror-stricken dreams were a clear indication of the severe trauma she had suffered before slipping into a coma.
" Cassie."
Laura's eyes fluttered open in a daze. She looked at Cassie, confusion clouding her gaze. "Am I dreaming?"
"No, you're not dreaming. Everything is fine now. Nathan didn't succeed, and you weren't violated," Cassie comforted her, pulling her into a tight embrace. "Thankfully, David arrived just in time."
