Chapter 148

""That woman destroyed Alexander, such a ruthless person!"" Helen wailed inconsolably.

""Mom, Dad, please stop fighting!"" Olivia Brooks rushed in to separate them, ""Dad, remember, this isn't the time to lose hope. We still have the our Corporation, and that's a top 500 enterprise in America, much bigger than Height Company!""

""But that’s in Grandma's hands..."" Robert hesitated.

""Dad, if you don’t act fast, we might lose that chance too,"" Olivia said softly.

""Olivia's right,"" Helen said fiercely. ""Think about it, those socialites used to flock to me. The moment Height Company faltered, they scattered. If we fall, we won’t have a leg to stand on in Madison.""

Robert's eyes battled with indecision before a steely resolve flashed through them. ""You're right!""

Cassie had a dream.

In it, she returned to Gardon Villa where her grandparents adored her during her frequent stays.

But then her grandfather passed away, and her grandmother said, ""Cassie dear, I'm tired. I want to be with your grandfather.""

""No..."" she cried out, bolting upright in bed.

A chill swept over her, and then an arm pulled her back into a warm embrace.

""What don't you want?""
His voice, rich and smoky, whispered in her ear, just before Joseph Hernandez's lips descended in a kiss.

""I had a nightmare about my grandmother passing away."" Cassie dodged his kiss, speaking softly.

Joseph Hernandez paused, noticing the unshed tears in her eyes. Gently, he stroked her head, pulling her close into his chest. ""It was just a dream. You're okay.""

""Mm."" Huddled against him, she experienced their first real intimacy, almost like a couple deep in love. Feeling awkward, she lightly pushed him away, ""I'll go make breakfast.""

The mention of food reminded him of his own hunger, having skipped dinner the night before.

After breakfast, Cassie got ready for work.

Joseph suddenly remarked in a casual tone, ""You'll not deal with the Garden Height villa project anymore. I don't want you running into David again.""

Cassie frowned. ""Can you stop meddling in my job?""

""Cassie, you're my woman; I have a say in everything concerning you."" Joseph stood up, towering over her by the edge of the dining table. ""The warning I gave you yesterday was not to be taken lightly.""

""I can bend to your will in my personal life but not when it comes to work."" Cassie stood her ground.

""What, you won the lawsuit and now you're disobeying?"" A hint of displeasure glinted in Joseph's deep eyes. ""Or have you always considered David your backup plan?""

Speechless and slightly angered, Cassie knew arguing with a man like Joseph was futile.

Taking a deep breath, she lowered her face, playfully tugging at her sleeve to appease him. ""Can't you trust me more? You are the only man for me. I love you. You're always swooping in to save me, like some hero from the heavens. How could I possibly have room in my heart for anyone else?""

After her spiel, she almost impressed herself.

She was in the wrong profession. She should have been an actress.

""You love me?"" Joseph lifted her chin, locking eyes with hers.

""Y-yes... I love you,"" Cassie's lips trembled, afraid of giving herself away.

Inside Joseph, it felt like fireworks were erupting, but his handsome face remained expressionless."
