Chapter 1374 I'm Starting to Like You a Little
Not long after, Michael strolled over.
He'd swapped into Elliott's black shirt. First time she saw him in such a dark getup, and man, it made him look way more grown-up.
"Hey, I'm sorry," he mumbled as he got closer. "About what I said yesterday—I was just pissed off. Didn't mean it."
"When are you gonna divorce me?" Laura cut him off, no hesitation.
Michael froze, then said, "I'm not divorcing you. You saw Maeve last night. She can't sleep right without us. Even when she was with me, she woke up crying twice."
Laura scoffed, "She was just crying for my breast milk."
Michael frowned, "Laura, why drag Maeve into our fights? She's just a kid."
Laura's heart ached. "I don't want this either. I hate being like this, but you pushed me, Michael. Remember how you apologized when Maeve was born? But look at what you said yesterday. Your words mean nothing."
Sure, Michael had her back with those socialites yesterday afternoon.
She wanted to get along, but his words cut deep.
"That was my bad."
Michael blushed, saying something shocking, but he had to keep going, "I didn't get that what I said while you were playing cards hurt your pride. I thought you were just mad 'cause you lost, and then you called me annoying. That stung too."
Laura was speechless, not sure what to say.
At least he knew he was dumb. "That's because—"
"Let me finish."
Michael cut her off, sadness in his eyes. "I know I'm annoying. Megan dumped me, said the same thing. Compared to Joseph and Lucas, I'm way behind. If Lucas didn't ditch Megan, I wouldn't even be a backup. I know I'm not as good as Joseph and Lucas, not as romantic. I've been a backup for over ten years. Hearing you say I'm annoying hit my biggest insecurity."
"I lost it and said a bunch of hurtful stuff. I'm really sorry."
His eyes were full of regret. "Don't take what I said to heart. You're actually really beautiful. If you hadn't gotten pregnant with my kid, a lot of guys would be after you. Me, on the other hand, even with my status, I'm not as good at business as Joseph, not as smooth as Lucas, and not as savvy as Derek. My mom even said if it weren't for you marrying me, I might never have gotten hitched with my personality."
"I've known for a while now that you look down on me 'cause I was dumb enough to be Megan's backup and get played by her. Being with me, you must feel pretty crappy since I'm a guy even Megan didn't want, and you hate her guts. Maybe you're thinking, why should you be stuck with a guy Megan ditched? After all, you're better than Megan in every way."
Michael went quiet after that, looking all embarrassed.
He even had this self-mocking smile on his face.
Laura was so stunned she forgot to be mad. She blushed hearing all that.
She didn't expect Michael to know some of her inner thoughts.
Yeah, she used to vent to Cassie all the time about why she had to marry the guys Megan rejected.
But thinking like that was kinda rude.
Megan's got a bad character. How could she say the guys she dumped were just trash?
And what right did Laura have to mock Michael? Wasn't she also dumped by Benjamin?
Michael and Laura were the same; they both fell for someone they shouldn't have when they were young, thinking that selfless devotion would pay off.
Looking at Michael's sad, beautiful face, Laura felt a bit sorry for him.
"Actually, you're not that bad. Who hasn't fallen for a few jerks when they were young? And if we're talking about who got hurt the most, isn't it Joseph? Megan caused his divorce, almost ruined his future with Cassie, and nearly made him lose his kid. Joseph even lost money; Megan spent over ten years of his cash. Honestly, if Cassie hadn't saved him, he might still be getting played by Megan."
Michael was stunned.
It seemed true.
If anyone got hurt by Megan, it was Joseph.
Michael suddenly wondered why he was praising Joseph. Joseph was an idiot too.
Laura continued, "And don't think Lucas is emotionally intelligent. Didn't Megan fool him too? When you three were against Cassie, wasn't he on your side? In the end, Megan was just too cunning."
Michael looked at Laura with a complicated expression. "Laura, are you comforting me?"
Laura felt awkward.
Wait, wasn't she arguing with Michael? How did she end up comforting him?
"You're overthinking it," she said angrily.
But Michael smirked, "My mom was right; you're a good girl. I was wrong before."
"You were wrong and dumb," Laura snorted.
"Yeah, I'm the dumbest person," Michael said softly, looking at her intently. "You're so good, and I didn't appreciate you."
Laura fell silent.
Why did she feel like something was off with Michael?
Did he take the wrong meds?
His gaze was weird too.
He was making her feel all kinds of uncomfortable.
"Laura, can we try to make this work?" Michael suddenly grabbed her hand, took a deep breath, his ears turning slightly red, and said shyly, "I think I might be falling for you."
The spoon in Laura's hand fell into the bowl. She was shocked and thought, 'What is Michael saying? Is he crazy?'
