Chapter 1512 What Kind of Man Do You Like

Laura was caught off guard for a second, then it hit her. "How'd you know I was done eating?"

She instinctively glanced around.

Derek explained, "I parked near the restaurant you were at. Saw you come out. Get out of the car, I'll come to you."

"I'm already out, at the corner where the car turned."

"Hang tight."

Laura waited less than five minutes before Derek pulled up, passenger window down, his face peeking out. "Hop in."

Once inside, Laura noticed the half-eaten McDonald's on the console and a laptop in the back seat. "You didn't just have this for dinner, did you?"

"Yeah, worked late till seven, so I just drove straight over." Derek chuckled. "What's wrong with a burger? Used to eat 'em all the time. Quick and easy. Plus, it's a holiday, streets are packed with couples. Eating out alone would just suck."

He gave Laura a helpless look. "I hate when people pity me."

Laura got it.

When she was single, she hated holidays like Valentine's Day and Christmas too. They just made her feel lonelier.

But hearing Derek say it made her feel a pang of guilt.

It felt like she had ditched him first.

"Actually, I didn't eat enough earlier. Wanna grab something else?" Laura looked out the window. "How about that noodle shop?"

"Sure." Derek smiled and found a spot to park.

The noodle shop was tiny and packed because of the holiday, with a line out the door.

Laura went to find a seat, and soon Remy sent a message on Facebook: [Let me know when you get home. Don't worry, I didn't take your ex-husband's words to heart. I'll judge for myself whether you're a good woman.]

Laura: [Thanks.]

After replying, Derek came over with two bowls of noodles. He glanced at Laura's phone and handed her a fork. "So, how'd the date go? Didn't you say it might last till eight? Was it bad?"

"I ran into Michael and Megan. Michael said some really nasty stuff in front of Remy," Laura grumbled, "Was that necessary? We're divorced, I even gave him a daughter. I just want a fresh start, but he seems hell-bent on ruining my rep."

"Michael probably hates you because of Megan," Derek said gently while stirring his noodles, "Don't overthink it. If Remy cares about that, he's not worth it."

"Remy didn't mind. He just sent me a message and said he's fine with what happened," Laura said, looking down, "Actually, he's not bad."

But Remy didn't make her heart race. They had stuff to talk about, so it wasn't awkward, but when she argued with Michael, Remy didn't stand up for her.

Laura could understand, it was their first meeting.

If Derek had been there, he wouldn't have let people give her weird looks.

While Laura was lost in thought, she didn't notice Derek's slightly serious expression.

"I see." Derek twirled his fork in the noodles. "I got a buddy who studied abroad and went to the same university as Remy. My friend's younger and teaches there now. I asked him about Remy. Turns out, he's smart, but after his divorce, he had two relationships, one with a student who was only twenty-three. Because he's so gentle, a lot of young girls at the school have a crush on him. His exes were all young and pretty. You definitely fall into the pretty category, so he should be into you."

Laura felt a bit grossed out.

It wasn't that professors couldn't date students.

But it suggested that Remy might have a thing for young, pretty girls, and with so many young girls chasing him, the chances of him cheating were high.

Laura, having been through a divorce, needed security even in a casual relationship.

Having been betrayed once, she was scared of making the same mistake again.

"My mom probably doesn't know about this. She must've heard about Remy from someone. On paper, he does seem pretty great." Derek added, "Oh, and my friend said Remy is super busy. Even though he has a kid, no one at the school has ever seen his child."

This basically told Laura that Remy didn't take care of his kid.

Laura trusted Derek. During dinner, she could tell from Remy's words that he didn't know much about his own child.

This indicated that Remy didn't take care of his own kid as well.

If Laura and Remy got closer, she couldn't expect Remy to be half as good to Maeve as Derek was.

Before having a child, Laura wouldn't have considered a man's ability to take care of a family and kids as a criterion for choosing a partner. But after having a child and seeing how good Derek was to Maeve, she wondered why other men couldn't be like Derek.

Even Joseph, who was bad before, was now very good to his two kids, taking them to amusement parks and playing with them.

Having been through a failed marriage, Laura wouldn't want to settle for less.

After thinking it over, Laura decided not to contact Remy.

"Forget it. I won't meet Remy again. I'll tell him straight when I get back," Laura said decisively.

A hint of a smile flashed in Derek's eyes. "Aren't you gonna give it a shot? He does have a promising future."

"I have a promising future too." Laura pouted. "I'm not short of money. Remy likes pretty women, and I like handsome men, but I don't think he's handsome enough."

"Remy is pretty average-looking, can't compare to me," Derek said with a cheeky grin.

Laura glanced at Derek's handsome face and then thought of Remy's. She really had no interest in Remy anymore.

"So, tell me, what kind of guy do you like? I'll help you find one." Derek tilted his head slightly, leaning closer to her. "I'm not like my mom. I'll make sure to do a thorough background check before introducing a solid candidate to you."

Laura's eyes met his, and they were so close that there was almost only a fist's distance between them. She could see her reflection in his deep eyes.
