Chapter 1543 I Really Miss You

Laura was caught off guard, a certain someone popped into her head. She quickly hung up and called Derek, "Is Micah's situation your doing?"

"Yeah, someone was messing with you, so I dug into it a bit," Derek's voice was calm, hiding the fact that he had just put a big-shot CEO in a tight spot.

Laura couldn't believe it. He was in Whisperlyn City, how did he find out so fast? "So, the hotel staff, that was you too?"

Derek paused, then said, "Isla's been a thorn in your side for years. Even now, she badmouths you in public, stirs up trouble, and those Silverwood women gossip about you with her. They think you're an easy target."

Derek was livid when he found out the truth.

Laura was irritated, "That's why I dealt with Isla myself."

"Oh, you mean setting up the waiter to snap those compromising photos when the reporters showed up?" Derek chuckled, "Not bad, but I think Isla needs a harsher lesson. Micah's kids already hated him marrying Isla. After this, Micah will definitely divorce her. He was publicly humiliated, and even got himself thrown in jail. Do you think Micah and his son will let Isla off easy?"

It was clear Isla's future looked grim.

Sometimes, Laura had to admire Derek's tactics. "I don't like Micah either, but I don't have a grudge against him. No need to send him to jail at his age."

"Don't worry, Micah didn't do anything major. He'll be in jail for a month tops. If he doesn't suffer a bit, how will he take it out on Isla? After this, Isla won't bother you anymore," Derek laughed.

Laura really hated Isla. Seeing her downfall made her happy, but Derek's cunning also scared her a bit, "Derek, would you ever do that to me?"

"Why would I?" Derek asked.

"You're too powerful and calculating. I can't compete with you," Laura said, feeling conflicted, "I realize I don't understand you at all."

"Laura, if I had no power, how could I protect you and Maeve? You wouldn't like a wuss to be your husband, who could just stand by when you handle everything or get bullied."

Derek sighed, "As for not understanding me, it's okay. When we meet next time, I'll open up and let you in."

"You're too smooth with words," Laura pouted.

"Alright, babe, I gotta go, got a meeting," Derek said with a smile.

"Don't call me that," Laura warned, then put down the phone. After a few seconds, she noticed the call was still connected, "Why haven't you hung up yet?"

"I'm scared to hang up first. You're so sensitive, I don't want you to get mad again," Derek explained.

"Who's sensitive?" Laura snapped and hung up.

Later, she realized she might've been a bit touchy. She did have a short fuse sometimes.

That evening, when Luke got home and brought up the incident, he looked at Laura, "Horizon Ventures Group is in shambles. Micah's in trouble, and the company's a mess. His new wife publicly humiliated him at their wedding, causing a huge scandal. Did you have anything to do with this?"

"Dad, I just wanted someone to teach Isla a lesson, maybe take some photos. I don't know about the rest," Laura said, trying to sound innocent, "You can ask Noah if you don't believe me."

Rose, always protective, chimed in, "I heard about the wedding too. Isla was badmouthing Laura everywhere. She had it coming. Isla's always been a pain, probably ticked off a lot of people. Micah deserved it too."

"Well," Luke sighed, "We've lived here for decades and done business with them. I didn't expect them to gossip behind our backs. It's a good thing we're leaving Silverwood soon."

"Exactly, Laura won't be the talk of the town in Whisperlyn City," Rose added, clearly annoyed.

With Luke and Rose backing her up, Laura felt a lot better.

A couple of days later, Laura and Rose took Maeve shopping, and Rose generously bought new clothes for both Laura and Maeve.

The Christmas spirit in Silverwood was strong, especially since Luke was the most successful businessman in the Miller family. Every year, relatives would gather at the villa.

During this time, Rose and the housekeeper would be busy preparing food.

Finally, on Christmas Eve, the relatives arrived.

Laura, Maeve, and the relatives snacked and watched TV together.

Despite her young age, Maeve was the apple of everyone's eye. They all loved holding her and playing with her.

Seeing so many people, Maeve was overjoyed.

Just before dinner, Derek sent a message on Facebook: [I'm in Silverwood.]

Laura was so shocked she almost choked on her food.

She quickly took her phone upstairs and called Derek, "Didn't you promise me you wouldn't come? Are you kidding me?"

"I promised not to come tomorrow. I'm here for Christmas Eve," Derek replied.

As soon as Derek finished speaking, there was a commotion on the other end of the phone.

"Sir, please step aside, the exit is this way," a steward's voice said.

Laura couldn't believe it, "You're at the airport?"

"Yeah, I called you as soon as the plane landed," Derek said, his voice soft and warm, "I haven't seen you in a long time. I really miss you."

With just that simple sentence, Laura felt a jolt of emotion. She hated herself for being so weak. During her time in Silverwood, she rarely thought about Derek, but now he had come and stirred up her feelings again.

"Derek, go back. It's Christmas Eve. You should be with your parents and grandfather," Laura said.

"My parents aren't in Whisperlyn City tonight. They went to HavenBay for a Christmas event. I originally had work scheduled too, but I finished it early," Derek explained.
