Chapter 1561 Because of Me?
Lucas still had that blank look on his face, like he was just watching a show from the sidelines.
Michael was losing it. He grabbed Lucas by the robe, "Say something! You think I won't hit you, Lucas? Right now, I really want to kill you. Why do I even have a friend like you? You're a backstabbing jerk, selfish and all about yourself."
"Are you done?" Lucas finally spoke, calm as ever, his eyes steady. "Michael, think about it. Who are you really mad at here, causing trouble for me?"
"Don't you know why I'm here?" Michael's eyes were blazing with anger. "Because of you, my life is a mess."
"Because of me?" Lucas scoffed, "Michael, you're always blaming Joseph, Laura, and me. Ever wonder why your old friends are drifting away? How many people showed up at your big, fancy wedding?"
Michael couldn't take Lucas's mocking anymore and yelled, "Shut up! I'm talking about Megan's kidnapping. I know you don't like Megan, but we've been friends for years. For Bernice, you treated me like a fool and lied to me. Tell me, is what Bernice said true?"
"Yeah, I did it," Lucas admitted, "When I found out it was Bernice, I went straight to Laura. I told her everything and gave her the idea. Laura chose to take the blame for Bernice."
"You bastard." Michael lost it and threw a punch.
But Lucas caught his fist. "What are you mad about? Because you didn't catch the real culprit who hurt Megan? Or because that incident made you misunderstand Laura and divorce her?"
"If you knew everything, why didn't you tell me back then? Why did you just stand by?" Michael's voice was desperate.
So all this time, Michael had misunderstood Laura. She never kidnapped Megan.
But why didn't Laura explain? She'd rather protect her friend Bernice and let Michael think the worst of her.
"I really don't like Megan. Why should I tell you the truth?" Lucas stayed indifferent. "Besides, Laura is your wife. You live together and raise a kid together. Don't you know what kind of woman she is?"
"Enough, stop dodging responsibility," Michael snapped, "When I went in to save Megan, Laura was the only one there, and Megan was in such a state. How could I believe Laura?"
"And afterward?" Lucas raised an eyebrow. "When you calmed down, did you think it through? Did you try to trust Laura even a little? If you had put in some effort to investigate, you would have known that Laura left the Presidential Palace that morning. How could she have had time to do that to Megan?"
He paused, then continued, "Or if you had put in a bit more effort, you would have found out that those kidnappers had no connections to Laura. But you didn't trust Laura at all and insisted she was guilty. Why should Laura explain to you? She must have been very disappointed in you."
"Enough, shut up!" Michael's face turned pale. "Laura refused to explain to me. If she had said even one word, I would have wavered. It was all her fault for protecting Bernice. She never cared about our family. And it's you who kept it from me for Bernice."
"Michael, you're so wrong," Lucas let out a mocking laugh. "I'm not a saint, and I own up to my crap. But you? You do bad stuff and then act like it's not your fault. Even now, you don't think you've done anything wrong? It's all on us? Did we make you hide Megan? Did we make you sleep with her and get her pregnant?"
Lucas chuckled, "If I ever get married, I'll be straight with my bride. I'll tell her not to fall in love with me or expect me to be faithful. I'll definitely have other women in the future. If she can't handle it, she shouldn't marry me. The difference between you and me is that you're bad but pretend to be a good guy to your wife, making Laura think you'll never betray her. But in reality, you spend your nights with Megan instead of Laura and your kid."
Lucas then added, "You stay with Megan, and then you hope Laura won't misunderstand. When she does, you say you'll send Megan abroad, but you still sleep with her. Don't say you were drunk. A truly faithful person knows to keep their distance from the opposite sex. Did you?"
Lucas's words hit Michael like a ton of bricks.
Michael's lips trembled, and his hands shook, as if the mask he had been hiding behind was being ripped away.
But Lucas didn't let up. "You came to me because you think I deceived you and caused your divorce with Laura? You're wrong. Even without Bernice, you and Laura would have split. At most, you wouldn't think Laura was malicious, and you'd stubbornly refuse to divorce. But eventually, Megan would call you from abroad, saying she had your kid. Would you make Megan get an abortion? No, you'd end up supporting Megan and the kid abroad while keeping Laura at home."
Lucas continued, "If Laura disagreed, you'd explain that you didn't mean for Megan to get pregnant, that you were drunk and Megan was pitiful and had nothing left but the kid, and that you couldn't be with her. Eventually, you'd bring Megan and the kid back, and Laura would be tormented to the point of wishing she were dead. And you wouldn't even realize it."
"Stop it!" Michael couldn't take it anymore. He stepped back, looking like he was about to collapse, filled with fear and panic.
"You don't want me to say it because I hit the nail on the head with your true thoughts," Lucas let out a cold laugh.
"Michael, we've known each other since we were kids. I know you better than anyone. Do you know why Joseph and I have been distancing ourselves from you? It's not just because of Megan. It's because you do bad things and won't admit them. You only think of yourself as a good person and blame us for everything. Everyone finds it tiresome, understand?"
Michael opened his mouth with difficulty, his heart in agony.
Originally, Michael came to cause trouble for Lucas, even prepared to fight him. However, upon hearing Lucas's relentless words, he gradually found himself speechless.
Definitely, if Megan hadn't lost that kid back then, everything might have really gone down just like Lucas said.
