Chapter 1401 I Didn't Expect You to Come
At night, Michael was tossing and turning, his brain on overdrive.
Lucky for him, Megan hadn't hit him up.
A few days later, Michael had to jet off on a two-day work trip to Emerald Lakeside.
The night before he left, Michael couldn't help but get cozy with Laura.
"Babe, I'm gonna be gone for two days. Let's get it on one more time," Michael begged, kissing and touching her.
Laura rolled her eyes. This was round two, and she was wiped out. "You're only gone for two days. I already gave you a head start."
"I still want more."
Michael kept messing with her.
He hadn't been too experienced before, but he'd picked up a lot since then, and now he was ready to show off.
Laura wasn't a pro either, but after being together for a while, he knew exactly where to touch her to drive her wild.
Before long, Laura was putty in his hands.
Just as Michael was about to seal the deal, the phone rang loudly.
"The phone."
"Forget it."
Michael had zero plans to answer. Only after they were done did he lazily grab the phone. Two missed calls from an unknown number and two texts.
[Michael, can you come to our lodge? My boss found an excuse to keep me here tonight. It's just the two of us, and he's giving me creepy vibes.]
[Please come quick. I'm hiding in the bathroom, and he's waiting outside. I'm really scared.]
Turns out the calls were from Megan.
Michael snapped awake.
The last message was sent ten minutes ago.
A lot could go down in ten minutes for a girl waiting for help.
"Babe, you go to sleep. I gotta handle something urgent. Don't wait up."
Michael threw on his clothes and bolted out, not even bothering with his hair.
He moved so fast Laura didn't even have time to react.
She had no clue what could be so urgent.
Work stuff, maybe?
Laura felt a bit like a used rag tossed aside, especially since he usually helped her shower and clean up after.
She wasn't usually this touchy, but she was beat today.
She didn't even have the energy to get out of bed.
Oh well, she couldn't be so petty.
Everyone's got urgent stuff sometimes.
Michael sped all the way to the lodge.
Even though he floored it, it still took him about half an hour to get there.
During that time, he called Megan, but no answer.
He pounded the steering wheel a few times, kicking himself for not picking up earlier. Was he really that desperate?
Megan had been through hell in Austin before. If she had to go through it again...
He couldn't even think about it.
When he got to the lodge, the gate was shut. He climbed over the wall and saw only the dining room on the second floor was lit.
He rushed in and kicked open the door to the private room on the second floor.
"Don't come in."
A vase flew at him.
Michael dodged and saw Megan in a mess, huddled in a corner with tears streaming down her face. A fat middle-aged dude lay at her feet, naked and bleeding from the head.
One look and he got the whole picture.
"Megan, chill. It's me," Michael said softly.
"Michael, you're here. What took you so long?" Megan slid down the corner, hugging herself, looking all kinds of messed up. "I thought you wouldn't come. I was so scared. He tried to force himself on me. I had no choice. I was scared and hit him on the head. I don't know if he's dead. I might have killed him."
Michael felt a wave of pity.
He quickly took off his coat and draped it over her shoulders, then crouched down to check the guy's breathing. "He's not dead. We'll get him to a hospital."
"But," Megan said, her voice shaking, "what if he calls the cops?"
"I'll take him to a private hospital. Lucas won't even know about this," Michael reassured her. "And he won't be able to stay in Whisperlyn City after this. Someone like him doesn't deserve to run a lodge."
"Thank you," Megan said tearfully, looking at him with gratitude. "I didn't think you'd come."
Michael couldn't meet her eyes. "I need to make a call."
He dialed his assistant and gave some quick instructions.
After hanging up, he hesitated and said to Megan, "I'll take you home."
"Okay," Megan nodded hesitantly. As she stood up, she winced in pain and almost fell.
"Careful," Michael instinctively caught her.
"Sorry, I hurt my knee when he pushed me," Megan said softly.
Michael thought for a moment and then scooped her up.
Megan caught a whiff of a woman's perfume on him, feeling a deep sense of irritation.
She had never thought much of Michael before, but now he was involved with Laura.
Laura and Cassie were probably the two women she hated most in her life.
But she didn't show it on her face. Instead, she said with guilt, "I'm sorry for contacting you out of the blue tonight. Did I interrupt you and Laura?"
"No," Michael denied.
Megan forced a smile. "I can smell a woman's perfume on you. Seeing you happy is actually a good thing."
She smiled, but tears welled up in her eyes.
Michael felt a bit annoyed and kept silent.
After putting her in the car, he asked for her address and drove her there.
When they arrived at the place she mentioned, Michael was stunned to see the run-down building. "You live here?"
"Yeah, it's the only place that doesn't require an ID and the rent is cheap," Megan said softly.
"Are you that broke?" Michael frowned.
"I lost the lawsuit and had to pay all my money to Joseph," Megan bit her lip. "Then I was caught by David and haven't been able to make much money since."
"Let me add you on Facebook. I'll transfer some money to you," Michael said, pulling out his phone.
"No, I don't want to owe you anything."
"You can pay me back later," Michael interrupted. "This is just a loan. But if you lied about Joseph, I won't let you off. It's not just about the money."
"I didn't lie to you," Megan said weakly, handing over her phone.
They added each other on Facebook, and Michael transferred her five grand.
He wasn't short on cash, but Megan was no longer someone he was close to. Giving her too much wouldn't be right.
