Chapter 391
In that moment, Cassie found solace in the darkness enveloping the room. Had the lights been on, her flushed face would have been visible, the blush intensifying the stark contrast of her scars.
"I didn't..." she stammered, her voice barely above a whisper.
"But you did. Why not examine yourself, see if there's an injury," Joe retorted playfully, his whispered words sending a chill down her spine.
"Fine, dare to kick me again, and I'll ensure you'll have something to inspect," she countered defiantly, raising her foot once more.
However, Joseph was swift to intercept her foot, "Steady, darling, unless you truly wish to incapacitate me."
His terms of endearment made her skin prickle with discomfort. She found his demeanor incomprehensible. How could he remain so unperturbed in the face of her disfigurement? "Could you please stop? I need to sleep."
"Couples don't sleep separately," he asserted, placing their marriage certificate beside the pillow as if to underscore their marital status.
A headache began to form in Cassie's temples, her emotions more entangled than ever. "Aren't you terrified of nightmares, looking at my face in the dead of night?"
"There's nothing to fear if everything else remains the same," Joseph responded, as nonchalant as ever.
Her face heated up even more, "Believe it or not, I might just end you."
"Listen, Cassie, I want you to understand that no matter what transpires, nothing could ever alter my feelings for you." Joseph wriggled under the covers, wrapping his arms securely around her. Cassie was overwhelmed by a complex surge of emotions as she truly felt his affection.
The man was remarkable... she was at a loss for words.
Despite her disfigured appearance, did he genuinely not care?
Astonishing.
"Do you believe me now? If not, I might just have to substantiate it with actions," Joseph declared fervently, his eyes never concealing his feelings for her.
Taken aback, Cassie nodded hastily, "I believe you, no need to elaborate."
"Kiss me," Joseph leaned in, seizing her lips without a moment's hesitation.
In that moment, Cassie's heart was in turmoil.
Did this man genuinely not care about her appearance?
She could discern he wasn't pretending.
His kiss was as it had always been, consistent.
It felt like she could never grow weary of his kisses.

On the third day following her discharge, Cassie headed directly to the Peace Group headquarters.
Having been absent for a fortnight, her first task was to convene an urgent executive meeting.
However, when she arrived, the executives were taken aback by her appearance.
Cassie was cognizant of her current disfigured state. The doctors at the hospital had advised her to let her wounds breathe, hence she wasn’t even swathed in gauze, leaving her injuries starkly visible.
"Apologies for the shock, a lot has transpired... my face... it may not improve in the future. I hope you all won’t be too taken aback," she stated composedly, confronting everyone candidly.
Despite her youth, her eyes exuded calmness and tranquility in the face of her disfigurement, eliciting admiration, especially among the female executives.
"Ms. Brooks, don't lose hope," General Manager Wu consoled her. "With the progress in medical science, your face will undoubtedly recover; it's just a matter of time."
