Chapter 950 He Was a Superfluous Man
Cassie's mind felt as if it had exploded.
Today, coming off the island, she had already received too many shocking pieces of news.
Though Walter was getting on in years, she had interacted with him before, and his health had always seemed fine.
As for Richard, although he had targeted her back in Madison, she had long since let go of her anger after stripping him naked in the restroom.
Later, when she first went to the Hernandez House in Whisperlyn City, Richard even helped her. She never expected him to end up like this.
"Didn't the Hernandez family call the police?" she couldn't help but ask.
"They couldn't. The Chamberlain family insisted that Richard had tried to harass Edward's wife. Edward took Richard to the villa on the spot. By the time Joseph arrived, it was too late. Edward just threw a wad of cash for medical expenses. Taking it to the police would only result in compensation. However, for both the Chamberlain and Hernandez families, money is the least of their concerns. Besides, David reported that Joseph had kidnapped you, so Joseph was also taken to the police station. He could barely protect himself. It was Lucas and Michael who managed to bail him out," Laura replied.
Cassie pondered for a long time before sighing. "The Chamberlain family is ruthless. Without the strong support of the Hernandez family, they wouldn't be where they are today."
"People are greedy, and Marcus is the most cunning of them all. After revealing his true identity, the first thing he did was abandon his useless wife. He doesn't care about anyone now," Laura remarked.
"Although I dislike Joseph, I'm happy about what happened to him as well. However, I believe that one should act with integrity. These underhanded schemes are truly disgraceful," Laura said.
"I feel the same way." Cassie deeply agreed.
After ending the call, she quickly dialed Liam's number.
It rang for a long time before a stranger's voice answered. "Hello, are you a friend of the phone's owner?"
Cassie hesitated for a moment and said, "Yes."
The man said, "Your friend has had a lot to drink at our restaurant. Could you come and pick him up?"
"Sure, give me the address, and I'll be right there," she then answered.
After hanging up, Cassie hurriedly changed her clothes and headed downstairs.
"Cassie, I was just about to call you for dinner," David said with a smile.
Cassie hesitated for a moment but decided to be honest. "David, I just called Liam, but a restaurant staff member answered. They said he had drunk a lot."
"Are you going to pick him up? I'll go with you." David immediately offered. "If he's drunk, you won't be able to carry him by yourself."
"Alright," she answered.
Cassie had thought David might be upset, given that Liam was also from the Hernandez family, but seeing his calm demeanor, she felt relieved.
However, Aiden was not pleased. "Although Liam has helped you before, I don't trust him now. Cassie, I suggest you keep your distance from these people. Marcus is ruthless, and Liam, being his son, is surely no simple character."
"Okay, let's just get him home first. I owe him that much." Cassie vaguely responded and then left with David for the restaurant.
When they arrived, Liam was already thoroughly drunk. The table was littered with empty bottles, and he was still holding one, pouring it down his throat.
"Liam, stop drinking. I'll take you home," Cassie said, taking the bottle from his hand.
"Home?" Liam laughed softly, his handsome face flushed, tears glistening in his eyes. "Where is my home? I am homeless."
The Hernandez family wouldn't allow him back, and the Chamberlain family—Marcus already had a wife and son.
Wherever he went, he was an extra, unnecessary person.
"Let's find him a hotel room for the night," David suggested.
David helped Liam into the car, but once inside, Liam vomited all over, filling the car with a foul smell.
Cassie quickly opened the window, her face full of embarrassment. After all, it was David's car. "David, I'm sorry."
"Fool, you're my wife. No need to apologize!" David chided gently, giving Cassie a reproachful look. "Honestly, Liam helped you before, and I had a good impression of him."
Cassie was surprised. "I've heard some things about the Hernandez family from Laura. Don't you think Liam..."
"Some things can't be judged by rumors alone. It would help if you interacted with Liam to understand him before making a judgment," David interrupted, speaking gently. "Besides, he is still Sophia's father in name. We can't just ignore him."
Cassie was deeply moved. She hadn't expected David to be so generous and wise, even considering Sophia's well-being.
She really wanted to make this marriage work with David, but unfortunately, too many things had happened on their wedding day that couldn't be undone.
After dropping Liam off at a nearby five-star hotel, Cassie and David quickly left.
Cassie decided to find Liam the next morning after he sobered up. She needed to talk to him about Sophia's situation, and she missed Sophia and wanted to see her.
By the time David drove her back to the Chapman family, it was already nine o'clock.
Aiden had the kitchen staff reheat the food for them. After they finished eating, he said, "It's late, David. Why don't you stay here tonight?"
Cassie's body stiffened, and she instinctively wanted to refuse.
"Alright, thank you, Dad," David replied with a gentle smile.
"No problem, we're all family," he said.
Aiden was very satisfied with David. Not only was David handsome, but he was also accomplished at a young age.
Now, the Wit Group was a leading pharmaceutical company, and David remained humble and composed, a quality many wealthy families lacked. What was rare was that after Joseph kidnaped Cassie, David had put his work aside to search for her. After finding Cassie, he didn't show any disdain.
Aiden didn't want his daughter to miss out on such a person.
Cassie fell silent. It was only after they finished eating and Aiden went upstairs that she hesitantly looked at David. "David, I'm sorry, but tonight I want to sleep with Oliver. I haven't spent time with him in a long time."
"Alright, I understand. I'll sleep in the guest room." David nodded.
Cassie bit her lip, finally making up her mind. "David, let's find a time to get a divorce."
David's gentle and elegant face instantly turned grim. "Cassie, is it because you still can't forget Joseph?"
"No." Cassie smiled bitterly, shaking her head honestly. "David, I don't want to lie to you. During the time Joseph kidnapped me, we... things happened. He wanted me to get pregnant so I wouldn't leave, but I got my period those days, so he didn't succeed. But I did betray you. I don't deserve you. Your family won't accept me anymore, and others will ridicule you. You deserve someone better."
