Chapter 1124 How About I Marry You?
"I told you before, I used to care about your feelings, and it cost me my family," Joseph said, patting his shoulder sadly. "It took me years to realize I just want a complete family. Coming home to my kids and wife is the best thing in life."
Michael was taken aback. He once dreamed of that life with Megan but was harshly brought back to reality.
"You don't get me," Joseph said, walking off to catch up with Cassie.
Michael felt bitter, thinking, 'So what if you have kids and a wife? I had a baby too.'
He glanced at Laura, who was walking ahead with Bernice, not even looking back at him.
The waiter led them to the best private room at Flavors of Elysium Restaurant, which had a balcony.
The table was rectangular, seating three on one side.
Joseph and Cassie naturally sat together, leaving one seat empty next to them.
Laura and Bernice sat opposite, and Michael finally chose the empty seat next to Laura.
"Who told you to sit here? Go sit next to Joseph," Laura snapped.
Michael felt bitter but knew he had to fix things with Laura to have any chance of returning to the Jude family and being recognized as a father. "Laura, I know I messed up. I'm sorry. Can we move past it?"
Laura and even Joseph looked like they wanted to hit him.
Joseph thought Michael was insincere. If it were Joseph, Cassie would be furious. Laura and Cassie were close and had similar personalities.
Sure enough, Laura slammed her cup down, her face full of anger. "Move past it? You turned my life upside down. If it weren't for this baby, I could be dating someone now. If you hadn't pushed for an abortion, I wouldn't have fallen down the stairs. If I had miscarried, I might never get pregnant again. You're so selfish."
Michael's face burned with embarrassment. "If it weren't for this child, you wouldn't be Carl's goddaughter. Carl's about to become president of Madison, making you the princess of Madison."
"Shut up," Laura fumed. "I've never lacked money. Do you think I care about being a princess? It's not as easy as you think. I can't be as free as I used to be. I have to socialize with all kinds of dignitaries who look down on you behind your back."
Michael was stunned, lowering his head in silence.
Laura felt worse the more she spoke, her eyes tearing up. "I just wanted a simple relationship, to get married and have kids. Now I'm pregnant out of wedlock. My belly isn't showing much yet, but when it does, I'll have to secretly go abroad to give birth. You've ruined my life, you jerk."
If Laura hadn't been holding back, she would've thrown her hot coffee at Michael.
Michael felt a deep frustration. He knew he had hurt Laura. If he hadn't invited Megan and Nathan to that product launch, Nathan wouldn't have set Laura up. Later, Julia switched her meds, causing Laura to get pregnant.
From the start, Laura was the victim.
If Michael had agreed to marry Laura as the Jude family wanted, things might've been better.
The child could've had a complete family, and Laura wouldn't have to hide her pregnancy.
But there were no "ifs" in life.
Cassie sighed. "Laura's right. She didn't want to keep the baby at first. Julia threatened her, saying the Miller family's company would be suppressed if she aborted."
"I'm sorry. I'm really sorry," Michael said, full of regret. "How about I marry you? I'll take responsibility. I'll treat you and the child well."
Though Michael didn't love Laura, he was willing to marry her.
"Stop dreaming," Laura snapped. "Do you think you're worthy of me? You're just trash Megan threw away. I'm not a garbage can for other people's trash."
Michael felt deeply hurt. "Laura, you're going too far. Joseph was the same way."
"Don't bring up my past," Joseph said, gripping Cassie's hand and giving Michael a warning look.
Michael, frustrated, blurted out, "Weren't you abandoned too? We're both trash, so we make a perfect pair."
Laura's face darkened with anger, and everyone fell silent.
Cassie rubbed her temples, thinking she'd never seen someone with such low emotional intelligence.
Joseph poured a cup of coffee and handed it to Michael. "Michael, just stay quiet. Don't ruin the mood."
Michael blinked, realizing the atmosphere was tense, and quickly said, "I mean, we have a lot in common."
"Who has anything in common with you? Michael, just shut up. I'd rather find another piece of trash than accept you, Megan's discard. Do you think you're worthy of me? I have money and power, backed by the future president. What do you have? A beaten-up butt?" Laura retorted.
Joseph spat out his coffee, while Bernice and Cassie laughed.
Michael's face turned red with embarrassment. "What are you all laughing at?"
Suddenly, the door to the private room opened, and Lucas walked in, dressed casually, exuding calm and elegance, with a gentle smile on his handsome face.
"Lucas, you're here," Michael said, seeing him as a savior.
Only Bernice's pupils flickered as she lowered her head and sipped her coffee.
"What's going on?" Lucas asked, looking around and seeing the only empty seat next to Joseph.
He walked over and sat across from Bernice.
