Chapter 1110 Is It Nina?
Max looked embarrassed. "The company can set you up with another project."
"If you're not happy, switch companies," Lucas cut in, smirking. "You want fairness? In this industry, no company is completely fair. If you are dissatisfied, leave, but be ready to pay the breach of contract penalty."
Bernice stared at his cold face, not particularly upset by his harsh words.
Instead, after a calm stare-down, she nodded. "Fine, I'll pay the fee. I'm done here."
"That works," Lucas smiled faintly. "But remember, the Nelson family controls most of the entertainment resources. One word from me, and you're blacklisted."
Bernice tensed, glaring at him.
Lucas didn't hide the malice in his eyes.
The atmosphere grew tense.
Max felt uneasy. "Bernice, just go back. I'll pretend this never happened."
"Capitalist power." Bernice sneered and turned to leave.
"Wait," Lucas called out, turning to Max. "You, get out."
Max was stunned; it was his office, but he was being told to leave.
Seeing the look in Lucas's eyes, he could only smile bitterly and walk out.
He thought, 'Lucas isn't usually petty. Is he targeting Bernice because he likes her and wants her as his mistress?'
With that thought, Max carefully closed the door behind him.
As the door shut, Bernice's eyes darkened, but she stayed silent.
"Do you know why I kept you here?" Lucas stared at her, his face growing cold. "Did you dig up William and Esmeralda's ashes?"
Bernice's eyes narrowed, her lips pressed together, but she didn't speak.
"You're smart," Lucas smiled. "Smarter and calmer than most."
He noticed that she often stayed silent and composed when faced with tough questions, showing her strong psychological resilience.
"It was me." Bernice nodded.
"Why?" Lucas's expression was inscrutable. "Do you know Nina?"
"I do." Bernice nodded. "That's why I moved William and Esmeralda's ashes."
Lucas lit another cigarette. "Who told you to move them? Was it Nina?"
Bernice looked surprised. "Nina's dead. How could she tell me to dig up the ashes?"
"She's dead?" Lucas turned, holding the cigarette, and laughed deeply.
"Isn't she? She jumped into the sea. Even a skilled swimmer would struggle to survive," Bernice said coldly. "Maybe her body sank and was eaten by fish."
"Shut up," Lucas warned, taking a deep drag on his cigarette.
Bernice stared at his back, her eyes burning with hidden hatred.
"As far as I know, Nina didn't have many friends. Just Laura and Cassie," Lucas said. "Even in prison, you didn't visit her. I'm curious how she became your friend and why you dug up those ashes. If you don't explain..."
He paused, turning back with a cold stare. "I can call the police and have you arrested."
Bernice looked at him. "If I said she came to me in a dream, would you believe me?"
"Do you think I'm stupid?" Lucas sneered.
Bernice bit her lip. "I'm telling the truth."
She slowly took out an old necklace. "Maybe it's because of this. Nina and I grew up together. My mom, Danielle, and Esmeralda were friends too. When I was five, Danielle and Esmeralda took us to church. It was freezing, and Nina and I were underdressed. We both squeezed into Danielle's big coat. A priest passing by said we had ill-fated destinies and would die young."
Lucas stared at the necklace, his hand clenching into a fist.
He recognized it; Nina had one just like it. He remembered seeing it when he undressed her.
Bernice continued, "The priest saw how close we were and gave us these necklaces. He said they were a pair. If one was lost, the other would sense it."
Lucas scoffed.
Bernice ignored him. "After Nina left, we lost contact. Three years ago, I had a dream. Nina said she was leaving and asked me to find William and Esmeralda's ashes. She said Esmeralda's ashes were with a dog. She didn't want Esmeralda's ashes to be with a dog, and William shouldn't be there either."
Lucas's body shook. After a long pause, he took a deep drag on his cigarette. "Are you messing with me?"
"I'm not," Bernice said calmly. "Mr. Nelson, with your power, you can easily verify this. I had no contact with her later, but moving the ashes is something only close relatives can do, so I stole them and buried them elsewhere. Maybe it's because of this necklace that Nina could find me."
"I'll investigate. If you're lying, you'll pay." Lucas glared at her.
"Why are you asking about Nina?" Bernice asked curiously. "Did you like her?"
"Like?" Lucas laughed. "Are you kidding me? A woman like her, worthy of my affection?"
"She didn't deserve your affection because you're not worthy of her," Bernice said softly, lowering her eyes.
"Bernice, are you trying to anger me?" Lucas's eyes flared with anger.
They had clashed before, but he hadn't lost his temper. This time, he was furious.
Bernice was silent for a moment, then said calmly, "She's already dead. Does it matter to say so much?"
Lucas stared at her for a while, then suddenly said, "Get out."
Bernice left without another word.
Soon, Max came in. "Are you trying to keep her as a mistress? She won't agree. She's very stubborn. Several big bosses wanted to keep her before, but she'd rather leave the industry than do that."
