Chapter 1266: Taking Care of Your Husband Like a Child
"As long as we got cash, what can't we pull off? Mom, chill, I ain't letting anyone mess with the kid," Olivia reassured, yet again.
At the hospital.
Cassie was also thinking about Everett. She was kinda worried.
She called Noah, only to find out Everett had gone MIA in Silverwood, and his assistant was dead.
"Cassie, what's the deal with you and this Everett?" Noah asked, curious.
"He's my half-brother," Cassie sighed. "I got a hunch David's behind this. How big is the Foster family's pull in Silverwood?"
"You mean the Fosters?" Noah sounded ticked off. "Our Collins family used to run this town, but Wit Group's been muscling in. Now, like ninety percent of folks here are under David's thumb. He even tried to cozy up to our family, but I ain't buying it. The Fosters have been a royal pain. If it weren't for..."
"If it weren't for what?" Cassie pressed.
Noah said gloomily, "If it weren't for our deal with Elliott, our Collins family might've been run outta Silverwood. I even thought about moving to Whisperlyn City, but seeing how Joseph is, I bailed on that idea. Didn't wanna dump more problems on you."
"Why didn't you clue us in?" Cassie said, frustrated. She hadn't seen David's growing influence in Silverwood coming. Otherwise, she would've warned Everett to keep a low profile.
Everett probably didn't think David would catch wind of his snooping.
"You and Joseph got enough on your plate, didn't wanna add to it," Noah said irritably. "That jerk David is a real pain. You guys gotta watch your backs."
Cassie gave a bitter smile, not even bringing up Joseph's situation.
Just then, a nurse called out, "Joseph's family, come over, please."
"I'll catch you later," Cassie said, rushing back to the ward, only to find Joseph bawling his eyes out. "I don't want a shot. I don't want a shot."
The nurse looked at Joseph, who was crying with snot and tears, her expression kinda weird. "Ms. Brooks, you gotta talk him into it. Without the IV, his wound's gonna get infected."
"Okay, okay, I'll handle it."
Ignoring everyone around, Cassie quickly hugged Joseph and gently coaxed, "Joey, if you don't get the shot, you'll get a headache and fever. Then you'll be stuck in the hospital forever, getting shots every day. You want that?"
"But shots hurt," Joseph pouted.
"How about this, if you get the shot, I'll buy you some candy, okay?" Cassie said, figuring a bit more candy wouldn't hurt a guy in his thirties.
"I also wanna watch cartoons," Joseph added, still sniffling.
"Deal," Cassie agreed without a second thought.
Finally, Cassie managed to calm Joseph down. The nurse gave her a sympathetic look.
Cassie had it rough, taking care of her husband like a kid.
When it was time for the shot, Joseph cried again. But he stopped when Cassie started a cartoon for him.
Later, Cassie asked Joel to head downstairs and grab some snacks. Nathaniel didn't have kids, so she had no clue what to get. Cassie suggested chocolates and cookies that Sophia liked.
When Nathaniel brought them up, Joseph happily munched on the chocolate.
Nathaniel almost teared up. "Now I see where Miss Sophia gets her sweet tooth."
She had no idea Mr. Hernandez was a chocoholic.
Cassie thought to herself that Joseph had a rough childhood, abused by his nanny and later sent to a mental hospital. He probably never had any chocolate.
She figured being kind to Joseph now was like giving him the happy childhood he never had.
In the afternoon, Lucas, Michael, and Laura dropped by.
Joseph was lying in bed, seriously watching cartoons with a chocolate cookie in hand. He didn't even notice anyone had come in.
"Joseph, what happened to you?" Michael's heart ached. "You're eating chocolate and watching cartoons. Are you still the Joseph I know?"
He called out for a while, but Joseph ignored him and took another bite of the chocolate cookie, looking satisfied.
Laura raised the milk and chocolate in her hand and smiled wryly at Cassie. "Now I get why you asked me to bring these."
"Just put them here," Cassie said, taking the food from her.
Laura patted Cassie on the shoulder, feeling really sorry for her. "Are you okay? You and Joseph have been through so much. Maybe you should just leave him."
"Laura, what are you saying?" Michael was annoyed. "Can't you see how pitiful Joseph is now?"
"He's pitiful, but isn't Cassie pitiful too? She's still so young. Who knows when Joseph will recover?" Laura was upset. "I think someone with so many disasters like Joseph shouldn't have a wife. Besides, if he hadn't been tricked by Megan, none of this would have happened."
Michael opened his mouth, looking conflicted. "Is that even possible? Could Megan really do that?"
"I told you before that Joseph was hypnotized by her, but you didn't believe me. Otherwise, how do you think a normal person could suddenly become like this?" Lucas said helplessly. "It's like there's a bomb in his brain, and Megan lit the fuse."
Michael looked confused. He couldn't wrap his head around how Megan had become so evil.
"Mr. Nelson, have you consulted with those psychologists and neurologists? What did they say?" Cassie asked.
Lucas looked at her complicatedly. "Some top psychologists have heard of that kind of hypnosis. It was banned in Yugrot over a hundred years ago. There's no record of anyone recovering from it. But I've asked Yugrot's top psychologists to dig into historical documents. Hope to find some clues."
"Alright," Cassie sighed. It was better than no hope at all.
Michael felt sad, moved closer to Joseph, and asked, "Joseph, can I have some of your chocolate cookie?"
Joseph looked at him, then at the tempting cookie in his hand, and quickly stuffed it into his mouth.
Michael was silent.
Even with the intelligence of a two-year-old, Joseph was still so cunning.
Lucas laughed, "Looks like Joseph's getting smarter."
"Yeah," Cassie agreed. "He's like a baby now. There's a lot to teach him, but he learns quickly."
