Chapter 320
"Leo hastily interjected, ""He's Cassie's fiancé, from the Wit Group.""
""Never heard of it,"" Joseph dismissed, his attention turning back to twirling his teacup. ""Since when can anyone just claim a seat at the Chapman table?""
David's handsome face turned red at those words, a deep chill flashing in his eyes.
Cassie felt as if she'd been slapped, her face marked with embarrassment.
Unable to resist, Luna let out a small chuckle. ""Exactly! Joseph's no ordinary person. Not everyone is fit to sit with him.""
Margaret felt highly awkward, considering she was the one who had invited them over.
""I'll sit at another table."" David patted Cassie's hand and walked to a different table.
""Wait, I'll join you. After all, I'm not fit to share a table with Joseph either."" Cassie followed David, and they took seats at a side table.
Joseph's lips were tight at the main table, his handsome face expressionless, his noble brow overshadowed with frost.
Everyone sensed Joseph's displeasure, and Chapman inwardly cursed Cassie. He put on a forced smile and said, ""Joseph, I truly apologize. Cassie doesn't know any better. Please don't take offense. She's an illegitimate child with little understanding of proper manners.""
""Dad."" Leo squirmed, his face flushed with barely contained irritation.
""Shut up!"" Grandpa Chapman snapped, shooting him a glare and casting a suggestive glance toward Luna.
Luna quickly clung to Joseph's arm, cooing, ""Joseph, I promise you, next time you come to the Chapman family gatherings, you won't have to see those two again.""
""Next time, wherever it is, if Joseph's there, they won't be invited,"" Grandpa Chapman offered his fawning assurance without shame.
Joseph's thin lips curled slightly, giving the impression of agreement, though those who knew him could tell his displeasure had only deepened.
The conversation naturally floated to Cassie's ears at the following table.
She noticed the faint sympathy mixed with schadenfreude in the eyes of the others at her table.
Her face drained of color, inch by inch.
David gripped her hand under the table, feeling powerless for the first time. He swore he would grow stronger and avenge today's humiliation.
After lunch
Cassie exited the ladies' room and bumped into Clark emerging from the men's. Clark was over forty, tall, with a rough beard, giving off a rugged and dangerous vibe.
Clark flashed her a sinister smile when their paths crossed. ""Not bad, girl. You managed to survive Snowford Evergreen's twists and turns.""
Cassie's expression darkened at his audacity. ""Keep doing dirty deeds, and eventually, you'll capsize.""
""Ha! Believe it or not, I could take you out right now, and no one would dare say a word,"" Clark said, making a slashing gesture across his throat before erupting into unrestrained laughter.
A chill shot through Cassie's gaze, her body trembling as she spoke, ""From your arrogant tone, it seems you're no stranger to heinous acts. My mother's death probably has something to do with you, doesn't it?""
Clark paused. ""Your mom died in a hurricane; what does that have to do with me?""
She scrutinized his expression — he had been brash before, but now he seemed genuinely off-guard.
""Isabella was unlucky, but you better watch your back,"" Clark warned, strutting away triumphantly.
Watching his retreating figure, Cassie fell into confusion.
If Jayden's family didn't kill Isabella, then who did?
After the banquet
She and David had just entered the parking lot when her phone buzzed with a message from Joseph: I'm waiting outside the hotel for you. Come out."
