Chapter 926 Hinting at Joseph
By the window on the second floor of the villa, Oliver nimbly climbed up and looked out. "Mommy, Joseph is guarding the gate again."
For the past few nights, Joseph's car had been parked at the gate of the Chapman family villa, sometimes waiting until Cassie left for work before driving away.
Cassie had grown accustomed to this.
"Don't care about him. Go to sleep," Cassie said.
She lifted Oliver off the chair and closed the window, fearing that Joseph might spot Oliver.
"Mommy, he always guards like this. What if he finds out that you and Uncle Foster are getting married?" Oliver asked worriedly.
"He won't. By then, I'll have the company announce that I'm on a business trip, and it won't be for many days." Cassie patted his small head to comfort him. "Oliver, do you... mind that I'm getting married?"
"No, I'm happy that you finally found someone who treats you well," Oliver said earnestly. "And Uncle Foster is very good to me and Sophia. Of course, if he ever treats you badly, I'll help you teach him a lesson. I'm getting really good at Taekwondo now, and I'll only get better as I grow up. No one can bully Mommy."
"Oliver, you're so sweet." Cassie kissed his forehead.
The next day, Cassie drove away from the Chapman family villa.
As she exited the gate, she acted as if she didn't see Joseph and drove off directly.
Joseph watched her car disappear into the distance, his face full of bitterness. In the past, when he waited at the gate, she would come out in the morning to talk to him. Now, she didn't even give him a chance to meet.
But since she had gone to work, there was no need for him to stay there.
By evening, as he prepared to go to the Chapman family again, Matilda suddenly called and asked him to come back.
By the time he arrived at the estate, it was already six o'clock. Sophia was having dinner with Matilda and Walter.
When she saw Joseph walk in, she bit her fork in inexplicable sadness. Although Sophia was still young, she could see that Joseph had lost weight and looked much more haggard. His once neat, short hair had grown longer, and though he was still handsome, he appeared much more brooding.
"Have your dinner and go upstairs to get some rest." Matilda sighed.
After all, he was her grandson, and it made her heartache to see him in such a state. "Stop waiting at the Chapman family gate every day. You just had surgery; your body can't take this kind of strain."
"I have things to do. If there's nothing else, I'll go," he said.
Joseph turned to leave, and Walter suddenly lost his temper.
"Don't think I don't know. You're going to the Chapman family again. All of Snowford Evergreen knows about you waiting there every day. You wanted to leave her. We all tried to persuade you back then, but you wouldn't listen. Now you regret it and want to get back with her. She's not someone you can just pick up and drop whenever you feel like it," Walter scolded.
"Yes, Joseph, let her go, and let yourself go too. You're still young, and there's a long way ahead. There isn't just one woman in the world." Matilda shook her head.
She was old and didn't understand young people's love, but she felt that no woman could forgive her grandson.
"There's no one else I want but her." Joseph stubbornly clenched his fists and walked forward.
Sophia suddenly ran over and grabbed his hand.
"Uncle Joseph, don't go. Will you stay with me tonight? My dad isn't coming back today, and I don't want to stay with anyone else," Sophia asked.
She looked up at him with pleading eyes, and Joseph's heart softened, unable to refuse. He could say no to others, but he could never say no to Sophia.
"Stay with Sophia," Matilda urged when she saw Sophia wasn't moving. "You haven't been back for a while, and she misses you."
"Alright," Joseph replied.
That night, after the nanny bathed Sophia, he held her as they went to sleep. Although he hadn't slept much these past few days, he still couldn't fall asleep when he lay down.
Unexpectedly, Sophia kept tossing and turning on his chest, unable to sleep either.
She called out, "Uncle Joseph..."
"Yes, what's going on?" Joseph looked at her gently.
Sophia felt sad. She knew this man was her father, but she couldn't tell him that her mommy was getting married to Uncle Foster in a week.
Uncle Foster was nice, but Joseph looked so pitiful. Just a few days ago, she had hated Joseph, but now she inexplicably felt sorry for him. She was a kind angel.
"Uncle Joseph, next week my dad... is taking me out for two days." Sophia finally couldn't help but give him a small hint.
"That's great. Liam should take you out to play. I'll allow him two days off." Joseph didn't think much of it.
Sophia felt a headache coming on and further hinted. "Dad's friend is getting married, and he's taking me to the wedding, not just to play."
"Alright, there will be lots of candy at the wedding, but Sophia should eat less," Joseph advised softly.
Sophia sighed inwardly.
Alright, this was as much she could do. If she said too much, Mommy and Oliver would definitely be angry, and she couldn't betray Uncle Foster either.
Sophia thought, 'Dad, it's up to you to figure it out. If you can't, then there's nothing more I can do.'
In the following days, Joseph kept running between the Chapman family gate and his company.
Six days passed in the blink of an eye. That afternoon, probably due to lack of rest, he felt a bit dizzy.
When his secretary reminded him of an international video conference at three o'clock, he snapped irritably, "Stop bothering me with everything. Liam can handle this."
"But, Mr. Hernandez, Liam is on leave for today and tomorrow," the secretary said.
Joseph was stunned and suddenly remembered that Sophia had mentioned that Liam was going to attend a wedding. "Alright, I got it."
The next evening, he drove to the gate of the Chapman family villa.
He waited at the gate until after nine o'clock, but he didn't see any vehicles coming out of the Chapman family gate.
Not Cassie's, not even David's.
For some reason, a sense of unease welled up inside him, and he couldn't help but call Nathaniel.
"Find out where Cassie went. Why didn't she come back last night?" Joseph ordered.
Nathaniel really didn't want to investigate, but since he was Joseph's subordinate, he had to follow him. He asked around at the Peace Group and quickly reported back. "Miss Brooks went on a business trip to HavenBay."
As the CEO of a listed company, business trips were common. The weight had been lifted off Joseph's heart. He was just afraid she had a new boyfriend. Although he knew it was unlikely, he was still worried.
"Find out when she left, which hotel she's staying at, and book me a flight to HavenBay," Joseph immediately added.
Nathaniel felt a headache coming on. "But Mr. Hernandez, the company has a lot of matters to handle right now."
"Nothing is more important than Cassie. Sophia said I must persist. Wherever Cassie goes, I will follow. I believe she will understand my sincerity," Joseph said in a low voice.
