Chapter 372
"Really? I don't think I'm going insane," Cassie offered a faint smile. "I've lived in worse places than this. It's not too bad here; at least the food isn't spoiled, and there's a blanket."
Liam was momentarily stunned. "What do you mean? You've eaten spoiled food before?"
He tried to comprehend the kind of life she must have lived. Gazing at the calm woman before him, he suddenly felt that she was an enigma.
"Questioning me is pointless," Cassie retorted with a hint of sarcasm. "After all, isn't my being here thanks to you?"
"If it weren't for me, your affair with Joseph would've come out sooner or later."
"So, I should thank you?" Cassie sneered. "Thank you for swapping Joseph's stimulants, for using Luna to bring people in so that the whole Hernandez family would find out, tarnishing Joseph's reputation and causing a rift with the family elders. All that so that you could take over as CEO."
Liam was left flustered by her accusation. "I admit I was despicable, but now I genuinely want to help you."
"Liam, just stop," Cassie cut him off. "To me, you're worse than Joseph. I was blind to who you are, but since you did save me once, let's call it even. We're square now; I don't owe you anything."
"Why can't you see what's good for you?" Liam was getting angry. "Staying here is pointless. Joseph's in over his head."
"Because I'm American, I can't just renounce my citizenship, nor can I ever come back. And I believe Joseph will get us out of here. He won't lose to someone like you."
Sometimes, Cassie couldn't understand why she hadn't chosen to leave.
But the thought of him in trouble made it impossible for her to desert him despite their complicated past.
She couldn't forget how Joseph had repeatedly appeared in her darkest moments, leading her to safety and rescuing her.
She believed that he could do it again.
A devil-like him wouldn't go down without a fight.
"Impossible, I won't give him a chance to turn things around," Liam snarled, completely enraged. "Since you're being ungrateful, do as you please."
With those final words, he stormed out and didn't appear again.
Shortly after, Cassie's phone battery died. She couldn't tell day from night. Suddenly, her injured face began to itch more and more until it started to rot painfully.
She felt like her face was truly ruined.
Now, it must look like it could be better.
If Joseph saw her again, it would surely be terrifying, which was for the best—maybe he wouldn't insist on keeping her anymore.
She only knew how many days had passed when the lady who brought the porridge came by.
Glancing at the bowl of soup, Cassie asked indifferently, "Is there medicine in the soup again today?"
After a tremble of her hand, the lady spat out, "So what if there is? If you're so capable, don't eat and starve."
Without another word, the lady set down the soup and walked away.
With a bitter smile, she lamented that even the staff of the Hernandez family were haughty.
However, to keep herself alive, she had no other choice but to endure, no matter how ruined her face might become.
