Chapter 1416 You're the Real Fool Here
"Everyone knows that project is the best thing for Madison's future. But Julia's too busy to handle it. Honestly, it's because she's a woman, not a son."
"Exactly. Michael used to run Dragon. After he got kicked out, Aaron took over. When Michael came back and owned up to his mistakes, they split Dragon between him and Aaron. Let's be real, the Jude Group was never meant for Julia. She's done the most for this family, though. If it weren't for her... well, you know."
"I think making Julia president was just a nod to her contributions to the Jude Family. But moving up from there? That's gonna be tough. She might make it to the board, but the prime projects will still go to Michael and Aaron. We should just stick with Michael and do our best. Some things are better left unknown."
Laura was stunned. She just wanted to eavesdrop a bit but ended up hearing all these secrets about the Jude Family.
To the Jude Family's subordinates, Laura was a nobody.
Turns out, even though the Jude Family talks down about Michael, they're still grooming him.
Meanwhile, Julia had done so much for the family but hadn't even been in touch with the ShadowNet Intelligence Agency.
The ShadowNet Intelligence Agency was one of the Jude Family's real powerhouses.
Just like Dragon was to Joseph.
Laura used to dislike Julia, but after Derek mentioned Julia's sacrifices, she realized how much Julia had given up for the family.
Even Carl's smooth rise to the presidency was thanks to Julia.
Laura used to think the Jude Family was great and everyone treated her well.
But now, she felt a strange fear.
No family gets to the top of Madison by being all innocent and nice.
"Upstairs." Cassie pointed up and mouthed, "Can we take out these two guys?"
Laura looked at Cassie, confused.
"Now we know for sure, Megan's upstairs. If we bring people up, it'll alert Michael. Better to take them out now. Joel's people will break in later, and we can grab Megan right away," Cassie whispered.
Laura was dazed for a moment, then nodded.
"Let's go down a few floors first, so they don't know we were eavesdropping. We'll come back up later and catch them off guard."
Cassie handed her a bottle of pepper spray.
Laura was silent, thinking, 'Why does Cassie carry so much random stuff?'
Cassie and Laura quietly went down a few floors, then came back up, arms around each other.
The two guys on the 19th floor heard footsteps below and glanced down, seeing two young women.
"So tired, let's take the elevator."
"Didn't you say you wanted to build up your stamina? Come on, persistence is key."
Cassie and Laura pretended to walk up to the 19th floor.
Cassie and Laura had put on some makeup, and the two guys gave them a quick look, thinking they seemed familiar.
But before they could figure it out, pepper spray hit their eyes, making them shut their eyes in pain right on the stairs. Cassie took the chance to kick them down.
Even though their eyes were burning, they quickly tried to get back up.
But Cassie and Laura weren't pushovers, especially Cassie, who'd been practicing martial arts with Joseph lately. They quickly knocked the two guys out cold.
With no one watching, Cassie and Laura headed to apartment 1908.
After knocking for a bit, a woman's voice came from inside, "Who is it?"
"We're here to clean your range hood," Cassie said, holding up a bottle.
"We don't need cleaning; go away."
"It's a free service."
Then, silence.
Laura cursed, "Quite cautious."
Cassie sighed, realizing they couldn't get in. She had to call Joel to bring in more people.
But after waiting for over ten minutes, Joel didn't show up. Instead, he called, "Mrs. Brooks, we were stopped by Dragon's people. They might have tipped off Michael. I also contacted Mr. Hernandez, and he's on his way."
Cassie was furious, blindsided by how much Michael was protecting Megan.
Laura stood in the hallway, feeling like an idiot.
Suddenly, Laura rushed forward and banged on the door, "Megan, get out here! I know you're inside. Don't expect Michael to save you today."
But no matter how much Laura banged, the door didn't budge.
Instead, Laura's phone rang. It was Michael.
Laura answered, sneering, "What, worried about your Megan?"
Michael was really worried. He was sleeping at home when Dragon's people called, saying Joel brought people to the apartment. Megan also called, saying Laura was cursing her at the door.
Michael couldn't figure out how Laura found the place.
He was so worried about Megan that he didn't even bother to explain to Laura.
"Laura, there's nothing between Megan and me," he said.
"Nothing? Do you think I'm an idiot?" Laura snapped, "You often stay with her until late at night, lied to me several times to have dinner with her, even left me at the cinema yesterday to find her. Michael, do you think I'm that easy to fool?"
"You're the real fool here. She betrayed you and slept with someone else. She treats you as a backup, and you still run after her? How pathetic! Maeve having a father like you is embarrassing. Sleeping with you is my shame. I feel like I need to scrub myself clean to avoid catching something."
After a string of curses, Laura was panting.
Michael was stunned by Laura's outburst.
Laura's words were so harsh and cutting.
He finally understood how restrained Laura's previous scoldings had been.
"Laura, you misunderstood me. I have a reason for hiding Megan," Michael said. "Megan is not as bad as you think. She had her reasons for those things in the past."
